State-Wise Wedding Traditions of India

How weddings are done in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Bengal, Punjab, Gujarat and other states, the customs each family follows, and what they mean.

These guides explain how weddings are done in each state and community. A Tamil wedding is over by lunch and centres on the thali. A Punjabi wedding runs for days, with jaggo and chooda before the pheras or the laavan. A Bengali bride is carried around the groom seven times before the couple first look at each other.

Each guide lists the rituals in order, what each one means, and what the bride and groom usually wear. Customs differ even between two families in the same town, so treat these as the common pattern and ask an elder for your family's own way.

We do not print muhurat dates on these pages. Fix the date with your family priest or astrologer, who will check both horoscopes.
