South Indian Wedding Rituals, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Kerala

A South Indian Hindu wedding is usually held in the morning, and its main moment is the tying of the thali or mangalsutra at the muhurtham. Most share a core set of rituals. These are the engagement, kashi yatra, the garland exchange, oonjal (the swing), kanyadanam, the thali tying and saptapadi. Kerala Hindu weddings are the shortest, often 20 to 30 minutes in a temple.

The four states share the core and differ in names, timing and the ritual families treat as the high point. In Telugu weddings, for example, the cumin and jaggery ritual at the exact muhurtham matters more than the thali.

What Makes South Indian Weddings Different

Three things surprise guests who grew up with North Indian weddings.

First, the timing. Most Tamil, Kannada and Kerala weddings are in the early morning, finished by lunch. Telugu weddings follow the lagnam, so they can be at night too.

Second, the thali. The sacred necklace, called thali in Tamil and Malayalam, mangalsutram in Telugu and mangalya in Kannada, is the sign of marriage. Sindoor is less central than in the North, though many brides wear kumkum in the parting.

Third, the horoscope. Almost every South Indian Hindu match starts with the jathagam (Tamil), jatakam (Telugu), jataka (Kannada) or jathakam (Malayalam), matched by the family astrologer before the families meet.

Tamil Nadu

Tamil weddings run over two days, with panda kaal muhurtham, nalangu and the janavasam procession before the muhurtham morning. The thali is tied to the sound of the getti melam on the nadaswaram, and the guests shower akshathai. Brahmin brides wear the nine-yard madisar for the main rituals.

Non-Brahmin weddings are often shorter and simpler. Tamil Nadu also recognises the self-respect (suyamariyadhai) marriage, with no priest. Our page on Tamil wedding rituals goes through each step.

Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

Telugu weddings have pelli kuthuru and pelli koduku in the days before, when the bride and groom are bathed and dressed for the wedding. On the day, a curtain separates the couple until the exact muhurtham, when they place jeelakarra bellam (cumin and jaggery paste) on each other's heads. Then the mangalsutram is tied, and the couple shower each other with talambralu (rice with turmeric).

In many families the bride's maternal uncles carry her into the mandapam in a bamboo basket. Our page on Telugu wedding rituals explains it.

Karnataka

Kannada weddings usually start with the nischaya tamboola (engagement) and naandi, a puja to invoke ancestors, a day or two before. On the wedding day the groom does kashi yatre, the couple exchange garlands, and the kanyadana is done as dhaare herdu: the bride's parents pour water over the couple's joined hands, often over a coconut and betel leaves.

The mangalya dharane follows, then saptapadi and laaja homa (offering puffed rice to the fire). Mysore silk and Ilkal sarees are common for brides. Customs in coastal Karnataka, among the Bunt, Konkani and other communities, differ a good deal from those in Bengaluru or Mysuru.

Kerala

Kerala Hindu weddings, especially in Nair and many other communities, are short. The bride and groom exchange garlands, the groom ties the thali, and he gives the bride a new saree or mundu (pudava koda). The couple walk around the nilavilakku (brass lamp) or the mandapam three times. The whole ritual can be done in 20 to 30 minutes.

Many couples marry at a temple, and Guruvayur temple in Thrissur district is the best-known wedding temple in the state. The meal after the wedding is the sadya, served on a banana leaf. Kerala Christian weddings have the minnu (a small pendant) tied by the groom, and Kerala Muslim weddings are nikahs with the mylanchi night before.

Why South Indian Weddings Are Short and in the Morning

The muhurtham decides it. Most South Indian families choose an early-morning muhurtham on a good day, often within a few hours of sunrise, and the main rituals are fixed around it. Feeding a few hundred guests a banana-leaf lunch right after also fits a morning wedding better.

You can see the year's marriage dates for your city on Drik Panchang. The final muhurtham always comes from your family astrologer, who checks both horoscopes.

All these weddings are valid under Section 7 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, which accepts the customary rites of either side. Register the marriage afterwards.

Start with the Horoscope Biodata

A South Indian alliance almost always starts with a biodata that carries the rasi, nakshatra and lagnam. Our jathagam biodata format works these out from the birth details, and it prints in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam or English. The porutham check that follows is explained in 10 porutham for marriage.
