Brahmin Marriage Biodata Format
A Brahmin marriage biodata format has the usual personal and family details, plus the lines Brahmin families check first. That means the gotra, the sub-community (Iyer, Deshastha, Kanyakubja, Maithil and so on), the nakshatra with its pada, and for many families the veda and shakha. Make yours here free, with these lines in the order elders read them.
What Goes in a Brahmin Biodata for Marriage?
A Brahmin biodata for marriage carries the same base as any Hindu biodata: name, date, time and place of birth, height, education, job, parents, brothers and sisters, native place and a phone number. On top of that come the lineage lines.
Gotra comes first. Most Brahmin families do not marry within the same gotra, so a proposal often stops right there if both sides share one. After the gotra, families look at the sub-community, then the horoscope, and only then the job and the photo.
Leave the gotra out and the first phone call will be to ask for it. Put it in and you save a round.
Gotra, Pravara, Veda, Shakha and Sutra
These five lines describe the father's lineage and the Vedic tradition the family follows. Not every family knows all five. Write the ones your family uses and ask an elder or the family purohit for the rest.
| Line | What it is | How families write it |
|---|---|---|
| Gotra | The rishi lineage of the father's family | Bharadwaja |
| Pravara | The rishis named when the gotra is recited, usually three or five | Angirasa, Barhaspatya, Bharadwaja |
| Veda | The Veda the family follows | Yajur Veda |
| Shakha | The branch of that Veda | Taittiriya |
| Sutra | The ritual text the family follows | Apastamba |
South Indian families tend to write all five. Many North Indian Brahmin families write only the gotra, and some add the mother's gotra too. Pravara is the line people most often get wrong, because it is recited at ceremonies and rarely written down. If you are unsure of it, leave it out. A wrong pravara confuses more than a missing one.
A girl writes her father's gotra until marriage. Our page on what gotra means explains where the lists come from.
The Main Brahmin Groups, Region by Region
Brahmin families differ a lot from state to state, and most prefer a match within their own group. So the sub-community belongs on the biodata, written the way your community writes it.
| Region | Groups families write |
|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu | Iyer (Vadama, Brahacharanam, Vathima and others), Iyengar (Vadakalai, Thenkalai) |
| Kerala | Namboodiri, Kerala Iyer, Embranthiri |
| Karnataka | Smartha, Madhwa, Havyaka, Hoysala Karnataka, Shivalli |
| Andhra Pradesh and Telangana | Vaidiki, Niyogi |
| Maharashtra | Deshastha, Chitpavan (Kokanastha), Karhade |
| Goa and the Konkan coast | Gaud Saraswat (GSB), Chitrapur Saraswat |
| Gujarat | Nagar, Audichya, Anavil |
| Uttar Pradesh and Bihar | Kanyakubja, Saryupareen, Maithil |
| Bengal and Odisha | Rarhi, Barendra, Utkala |
| Rajasthan | Pareek, Dadhich, Gaur |
| Punjab, Himachal and Kashmir | Saraswat, Mohyal, Kashmiri Pandit |
The list is not complete, and spellings change from family to family. Every group in this table is in the Caste / Community list of our form, so typing "Vadama" or "Deshastha" brings it up.
What Each Group Adds
A few groups have lines of their own that the other side will look for.
Iyer and Iyengar families build the biodata around the jathagam: rasi, nakshatra, lagnam and dasa at birth, matched by porutham. Iyengar families write Vadakalai or Thenkalai, and some name the acharyan. The jathagam biodata format page shows the Tamil way of writing these lines.
Deshastha and Chitpavan families in Maharashtra usually print in Marathi and often add gan, nadi and the kuldaivat. Our Marathi biodata page covers how the Marathi labels print.
Maithil Brahmin families in Mithila have a long tradition of checking the panji, the genealogy records kept by panjikars, before a match. Many write the mool (the family's place of origin) along with the gotra and the native village.
Kanyakubja, Saryupareen and Gaur families in the North mostly write the gotra, the native village and the kundli details for gun milan, often with Hindi labels. Saraswat families from Goa and Karnataka often name the math they follow, such as Kashi Math or Chitrapur Math, and the kuladevata temple.
Horoscope Lines on a Brahmin Biodata
Most Brahmin families match horoscopes before a meeting. Our form works out the rasi, the nakshatra with its pada, the lagna, the dasa at birth and the tithi from the date, time and place of birth (Lahiri ayanamsa). The pada prints on the same row, like "Swati, Pada 3".
If your family jothidar or panditji has written a different star, pick that one. Some Tamil families follow the Vakya panchang, which can give a different nakshatra close to a star change.
Chevvai / Manglik is never filled by itself. Choose No, Yes, Partial or Don't Know, the way your astrologer has told you.

| About Me | Learnt Carnatic vocal for twelve years and still sings at home. Plans to keep working after marriage. Looking for a boy from an Iyer family, same gotra not acceptable. |
For a boy, the Brahmin boy biodata sample shows how to write the job, income and family lines.
Is Same-Gotra Marriage Allowed?
By law, yes. Section 5 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 sets the conditions for a Hindu marriage, and gotra is not one of them. By custom, most Brahmin families still avoid it, and many also avoid the same pravara.
That choice belongs to the family, and the biodata is where you say it. "Same gotra not acceptable" or "Sub-caste no bar" at the end of About Me answers the question before anyone has to ask.
How to Make a Brahmin Biodata Here
- Open the designs and pick one. Temple Bell, Kanjivaram Zari and Paisley Border suit most Brahmin families.
- Choose "This Biodata Is For: Male / Female" and type the Full Name.
- Verify your mobile number once with the SMS code.
- Fill Personal Details. Choose Hindu, then type your group in Caste / Community. Picking a suggestion prints only that name, such as "Vadama", so type "Iyer, Vadama" yourself if you want both.

- Choose the biodata language at the top: English, or Tamil, Marathi, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and the others.
- Download PDF or Download Image. After the download you can also save an editable Word file.
