Jain Biodata Format for Marriage

A Jain marriage biodata has the usual birth, education, work and family details, plus three lines Jain families read first. The sect (Digambar or Shwetambar), the community and gotra, and the diet. Many start with णमो अरिहंताणं at the top.

What Goes in a Jain Biodata for Marriage?

A Jain biodata for marriage looks much like a Gujarati, Rajasthani or Marathi Hindu one. The difference is in a few lines. Families want the sect, the community with its gotra, the native place and the food the person eats. Most Jain families also write the family business in detail.

Some Jain families match horoscopes and some do not. Our form keeps the horoscope section on for a Jain biodata, with rasi, nakshatra and lagna worked out from the date, time and place of birth. If your family does not match kundlis, switch off "Include horoscope on the biodata" and nothing about stars prints.

Digambar or Shwetambar, and the Sub-Sect

Write the sect first. Families who care about the sub-sect write that too, because it tells the other side which temple and which saints the family follows.

SectSub-sects families often write
ShwetambarMurtipujak (also called Deravasi), Sthanakvasi, Terapanthi
DigambarBispanthi, Terapanthi, Taranpanthi

Our form has no separate sect field. Type it in Caste / Community along with the community: "Shwetambar Murtipujak, Oswal" or "Digambar Jain, Khandelwal". If you want a separate row, use Add Your Own Field in Personal Details and name it Sect.

Open to either sect? Say so at the end of About Me: "Sect no bar."

Gotra and Community

Many Jain communities keep a gotra, often the same as the family surname. Oswal, Porwal, Shrimal, Khandelwal and Agarwal Jain families are common examples. Write the father's gotra. Some families also write the mother's side (the mosal or nanihal) with its gotra, because they avoid a match on either side.

In our form, Gotra is in Add More Details of the horoscope section. If you switch the horoscope off, add Gotra with Add Your Own Field in Personal Details instead, so it still prints.

Jain Food on the Biodata

Food matters in a Jain match, so give it its own line. Open Add More Details in Personal Details, tap Diet and choose Jain Food. That tells the other family there is no onion, garlic or root vegetable at home.

If you also follow chauvihar (nothing to eat or drink after sunset) or do not eat outside food, add one line in About Me. Write what is true for you. Nobody needs a ranking of who follows more.

Jain Symbol and the Namo Arihantanam Line

The Jain Swastik is the Jain symbol in our list. It comes in by itself when you choose Jain as the Religion. The Ahimsa Hand is the other Jain symbol you can pick.

For the Blessing Line, the Jain lines are the first line of the Navkar Mantra and Jai Jinendra, in the script of your choice:

  • णमो अरिहंताणं and नमो अरिहंताणं in Devanagari
  • ॥ जय जिनेन्द्र ॥
  • નમો અરિહંતાણં and ॥ જય જિનેન્દ્ર ॥ in Gujarati
  • ಣಮೋ ಅರಿಹಂತಾಣಂ and ಜೈ ಜಿನೇಂದ್ರ in Kannada

On an English biodata the Blessing Line starts switched off. Turn it on to pick one, or choose Write My Own and type "Namo Arihantanam" in English letters.

Samaj WhatsApp Groups and Biodata Banks

Many Jain samaj organisations run biodata WhatsApp groups and biodata banks, and some print a parichay booklet for their yearly sammelan. We do not run any group. You get the biodata ready, and the samaj office or group admin tells you how to send it.

Most group admins ask for one page with a clear photo and a contact number. Download the image for the WhatsApp group and keep the PDF for a printed booklet. If you do not want the girl's own number in a big group, put her father as Contact Person.

Hindi, Gujarati or English?

Gujarati Jain families often print in Gujarati, Rajasthani and Madhya Pradesh families in Hindi, and families in Mumbai, Pune or Bengaluru in English. Type the details in English and choose the print language. The labels print in that script.
