A Bengali Muslim wedding usually runs in this order. First paan-chini, the formal agreement between the families. Then gaye holud (turmeric) for the bride and the groom. Then the nikah, also called the aqd, where the kazi records the marriage and the denmohor (mahr) in the kabin nama. After that come the rukhsati, the walima or bou bhaat hosted by the groom's family, and the bride's first visit back home.
The nikah is the only part Islam requires. The rest are Bengali customs, and families keep as many or as few as they like.
This page describes how many Muslim families in West Bengal, from Kolkata to Murshidabad and Malda, hold these functions. Customs differ a lot between families and districts, so check with your own elders.

Fixing the Match and Paan-Chini
Most Bengali Muslim marriages are still arranged, and the first step is the families meeting and seeing each other, often called dekha-shona. Families exchange the boy's and girl's details, often as a biodata on WhatsApp. If both sides agree, they move to paan-chini.
Paan-chini is the occasion that confirms the match. The groom's family visits the bride's home with paan (betel leaf), chini (sugar) and sweets. The two families share paan and sweets as a sign that the talk is settled, and the wedding date is usually fixed here. In some families a ring or a small piece of jewellery is given to the bride at the same visit.
Some families call this the engagement or "biye pakka" (the wedding is fixed). The name changes from family to family, but the idea is the same.
Gaye Holud
Gaye holud means "turmeric on the body". It is held at both homes, usually a day or two before the wedding. Women of the family apply turmeric paste to the bride's face, arms and feet, with songs, and in many families the groom's side first sends turmeric, clothes and sweets to the bride.
Bengali Muslim families often hold the bride's and groom's holud on separate days or at separate homes. Yellow and green are the usual colours, and the bride often wears a yellow saree with flower jewellery.
Gaye holud is a cultural custom shared with Bengali Hindus, not a religious ritual. Some religious families skip it or keep it very small.
Mehendi
The mehendi is often held the night before the wedding, or on the same evening as the holud. Female relatives and friends gather, the bride's hands and feet are decorated, and there is music and food. In many families now the mehendi has become a bigger evening function than the holud.
The Nikah, Kabin and Denmohor
The nikah is the wedding itself. In Bengali Muslim families it is often called the aqd, or simply biye.
- The groom arrives with his family and friends at the bride's home or the wedding venue.
- At the gate, the bride's sisters and cousins may block the way with a ribbon until the groom's side pays some money. This is called gate dhora, and it is a fun custom, not a demand.
- The kazi, with two adult witnesses, asks the bride if she accepts the marriage on the stated denmohor. She says "qabul" (I accept), usually three times. The kazi then asks the groom the same.
- The details go into the kabin nama, the marriage contract. It records both names, the denmohor and the witnesses, and both sign it.
- A short dua is read, and dates and sweets are shared.
Denmohor (mahr) is the amount or gift the groom commits to the bride. It is hers, by right, and is written in the kabin. Families agree the amount before the nikah. Some give part of it at once and record the rest as owed.
In many traditional Bengali Muslim families, the bride and groom say their qabul in separate rooms, with the kazi going to each. Some families now hold it with both in the same room. Our page on the nikah ceremony explains the Islamic requirements in full.
Mukh Dekha and the Meal
After the nikah, many families hold a small custom where the groom sees the bride's face in a mirror, or relatives "see the bride's face" and give her gifts. Practice varies a lot.
Then comes the wedding meal. In Kolkata and much of West Bengal, a Muslim wedding meal is known for biryani (often the Kolkata style, with potato and egg), chaap, rezala, firni and borhani or a cold drink. The menu is a matter of pride for the bride's family.
Rukhsati
Rukhsati is when the bride leaves her parents' home for her husband's. It is an emotional moment, with the bride's mother and sisters saying goodbye at the door. The Quran is sometimes held over the bride's head as she leaves, in some families.
Walima or Bou Bhaat
The walima is the feast the groom's family gives after the marriage, usually the next day or within a few days. In Bengali-speaking Muslim families it is often called bou bhaat (the bride's rice), the same name Bengali Hindus use for their reception, though the rituals are different.
Walima is a sunnah, and many families keep it modest. Our page on walima explains its rules and timing.
Phirani
A few days after the wedding, the bride visits her parents' home with her husband, sometimes for a night or two. This is often called phirani or phira jatra. It is the bride's first return home as a married woman, and her family welcomes the couple with a meal.
How It Differs from a Bengali Hindu Wedding
Both share the Bengali language, food, songs and the gaye holud. The wedding ceremony itself is different. A Bengali Hindu wedding has shubho drishti, saat paak and sindoor daan around a fire, while a Muslim wedding has the nikah with the kazi, the kabin and the denmohor. Our Bengali wedding rituals page covers the Hindu side.
Registration After the Nikah
In West Bengal, Muslim marriages are usually recorded by a Muslim marriage registrar licensed by the state, often the kazi himself. Keep the kabin and the registrar's certificate safe. Our West Bengal marriage registration page explains the state portal and the Special Marriage Act route.
