Maratha Marriage Biodata Format

A Maratha marriage biodata has the usual birth, job and family details, plus the lines Maratha families read first. The devak, the kuldaivat (family deity), the mul gaav (native village) and the mama's name. Many families also write "96 Kuli Maratha" in the caste line and add gan and nadi for patrika matching.

What Goes in a Maratha Biodata?

Most of a Maratha lagnacha biodata is the same as any Hindu one. Name, date, time and place of birth, height, education, job, parents, brothers and sisters, contact. The difference is in four or five lines that tell the other family where you come from.

The devak is the main one. In many Maratha families a match between two families with the same devak is avoided, much the way other Hindu communities avoid the same gotra. So the devak goes near the top, and elders read it before they look at the photo.

The kuldaivat and the mul gaav help the other side place you. Which temple, which village, and do they know anyone from there?

Devak, Kuldaivat and Gotra

The devak is the family's guardian emblem, passed down the father's line. It is usually a tree or a plant, and it is worshipped at the start of the wedding rituals. The Wikipedia article on the devak gives the pipal tree as an example and notes the old rule against marrying a girl whose paternal devak is the same as the boy's.

City-born children often do not know their devak. Ask an elder or someone in the village. A wrong devak can stop a good proposal, so check it before you print.

The kuldaivat is the family deity, the temple the family visits before every big event. Write the deity and the place: "Khandoba, Jejuri", "Tulja Bhavani, Tuljapur" or "Jyotiba, Wadi Ratnagiri".

Gotra is used by some Maratha families and not by others. If yours uses one, write it. If not, leave the line out. The devak does that job in most Maratha matches.

96 Kuli, Kunbi Maratha and the Caste Line

"96 Kuli" refers to the traditional list of 96 Maratha clans. Many families write "96 Kuli Maratha" in the caste line, and some look only within the 96 Kuli. Different lists of the 96 clans exist, and families do not always agree on them, so write what your family writes and leave it there.

Other common entries are "Maratha", "Kunbi Maratha" and "Deshmukh". Use the one your family uses on certificates and in the samaj. No explanation is needed on the biodata.

In our form, "96 Kuli Maratha", "Maratha Kunbi" and "Deshmukh" are all in the Caste / Community list. Picking one prints that name as it is. To print "Hindu Maratha (96 Kuli)" instead, just type it.

Patrika Details Maratha Families Expect

Most Maratha families match the patrika (horoscope) before a meeting, and a Marathi biodata often carries more horoscope lines than a North Indian one.

LineWhat families write
RasiMoon sign, such as Kanya or Vrishabha
Nakshatra and charanThe star and its quarter, such as Hasta, charan 3
GanDev, Manushya or Rakshas
NadiAdya, Madhya or Antya
MangalYes, No or Partial
Time and place of birthAlways, so the other side's astrologer can check

Our form fills the rasi, the nakshatra with its charan, the lagna, the dasa and the tithi from the birth details. Gan and nadi are not standard fields. Add each one with Add Your Own Field in the horoscope section. Chevvai / Manglik is never filled by itself, so choose No, Yes, Partial or Don't Know as your jyotishi has said.

Mul Gaav, Mama and the Family

Maratha families write the family background in full. Father's work, brothers and sisters, the mama, and sometimes the surnames of related families (the natevaik). Farming is common and respected. Write it plainly, with the acres and the crop if you like: "Sugarcane farmer, 6 acres, Panhala".

The mul gaav is the village the family comes from, with taluka and district. Write it even if the family has lived in Pune or Mumbai for decades. On a Marathi biodata our Native Place row prints as मूळ गाव.

Maternal Uncle and Property are under Add More Details in Family Details. Land goes well in Property.

Blessing Lines for a Maratha Biodata

Most Maratha biodatas start with Ganpati at the top. Choose Hindu as the Religion and the Ganesha symbol comes in by itself. On a Marathi biodata, the Blessing Line list offers these lines:

  • ॥ श्री ॥

Want your own kuldaivat named, like "॥ श्री खंडोबा प्रसन्न ॥"? Choose Write My Own and type it.

Marathi or English?

Families in villages and small towns mostly print in Marathi. Families in Pune, Mumbai or abroad often send an English one. Type the details in English and choose the biodata language.

On a Marathi biodata the labels, the rasi and the nakshatra print in Marathi, and what you type prints as you typed it. A field you add yourself can be named in Marathi, like "देवक", and it prints exactly so.

The Marathi marriage biodata page has the full list of Marathi labels.
