Indian Wedding Rituals and Ceremonies

Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Jain and Buddhist wedding rituals in order, from roka and haldi to nikah and anand karaj, explained simply.

These guides explain the rituals of an Indian wedding one at a time: roka and engagement, haldi, mehendi and sangeet, kanyadaan, saptapadi and the 7 vachan, the Muslim nikah and the Sikh Anand Karaj. Each says what happens, who does it, and how long it takes.

Where a ritual has a legal side, we link the law itself. Under the Hindu Marriage Act, for example, a marriage is complete when the seventh step of saptapadi is taken, if saptapadi is part of the family's custom. Kanyadaan is not required in law.

Families do things differently, and none of these guides is a rule book. When in doubt, follow your elders and your priest.
