Marriage Biodata by State, and What Each Region Adds
The core of a marriage biodata is the same in every state. What changes is the handful of lines elders read first. In Maharashtra it is the devak and kuldaivat, in Gujarat the gaam and mosal, in Punjab the got, in Kerala the star. This page goes region by region, with the guides we have written for each state.
Why the State Changes the Biodata
People search for a "Gujarati biodata" or a "Kerala biodata", and they are right to. A biodata from Rajkot and one from Thrissur share most of their rows, but the other family reads them in a different order. Each region has two or three lines that tell an elder who you are and whether the horoscopes need checking.
Our form has the same fields in every state. The regional lines go in with Add Your Own Field, in the section where they belong, and the labels print in the language you choose.
Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa
Marathi families look early for the devak, the kuldaivat (family deity with its temple, such as "Khandoba, Jejuri") and the mul gaav, the native village. From the patrika they want the rashi, the nakshatra with charan, and often gan and nadi. The mama's name and village sit in the family section.
Gujarati families read the gnati or samaj with its sub-group, the gaam and the mosal, which is the mother's family and village. The kuldevi and the father's business are often written in detail, and diet gets its own line.
Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and the North
In Punjab the got comes first, and many Jat families also check the mother's got. Sikh biodatas name how the person keeps the faith and usually skip the horoscope. Families with a child abroad write the country and visa status exactly.
In Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi, most Hindu families write the gotra, the kuldevi and the native place, with rashi, nakshatra and manglik status for gun milan, the match out of 36 points.
Tamil Nadu, Kerala and the Other Southern States
Tamil families put the jathagam details early: rasi, natchathiram, lagnam and chevvai dosham, for the 10 porutham check. Many add the kula deivam, and Brahmin families the gothram.
In Kerala, a Hindu proposal often starts with "What is the star?" Families write the star, the chovva dosham status and the house name, which tells relatives which family you come from. Christian families write the denomination and parish instead. Many Muslim families write the mahallu.
Kannada and Telugu families write the gotra or gothram, the nakshatra and the native place. Telugu families often add the intiperu, the family name that goes before the given name.
Bengal, Odisha, Bihar and the North-East
Bengali families write the gotra, and many keep a kushti, the Bengali horoscope. Bihar families write the native village in full, with gram, post, thana and zila, and Maithil Brahmin families add the mool from the panji records. Odia families usually write the gotra with the rashi and nakshatra.
In the North-East, many families are Christian and leave the horoscope out, while Assamese Hindu families often keep it.
State Page or Language Page?
The language is about the script and the words on the page. The state is about which lines families expect. A Marathi family in Bengaluru may want Marathi labels and a Maharashtra layout, and a Kerala family in Dubai may want English labels with the star near the top.
You can print a biodata in any of our 12 languages, whatever state you live in. For the lines that follow religion or community, see biodata by religion and biodata by community.
Common Questions
Is There a Different Biodata Format for Each State?
The core is the same. Each state adds a few lines its families expect, such as the devak in Maharashtra, the got in Punjab, the house name in Kerala or the full native village in Bihar.
Can I Make a Biodata in My State's Format If I Live Somewhere Else?
Yes. Many families in Pune, Bengaluru, Dubai or Toronto still use their home state's lines. Add them with Add Your Own Field and pick the print language you want.
Which States Use Horoscope Matching?
Most Hindu families across India match horoscopes, with gun milan in the north and west and porutham in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Most Christian, Sikh and Buddhist families do not.
