An Ahmedabad marriage biodata is a Gujarati lagna biodata with a city layer. It carries the gnati with its sub-group, the gaam, the mosal, the kuldevi and the diet, as in the rest of Gujarat.
On top of that, Amdavadi families write the area they live in and the type of home, the family business or the exact job, and very often a brother or cousin in the US. Most are in Gujarati or English, and many families make both.
Ahmedabad parents are practical readers. They look at the area, the business and the diet line before the photo.
The Ahmedabad Lines
| Line | What families write | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Area | Locality in Ahmedabad or Gandhinagar | Satellite, Paldi, Maninagar, Bopal, Naranpura |
| Home | Bungalow, tenement or flat, owned | Own bungalow, Prahladnagar |
| Gnati and sub-group | Most families | Visa Shrimali Jain, Kadva Patel, Vadnagara Nagar |
| Diet | Very often written | Jain food, or vegetarian, no onion and garlic |
| Business | Trade, place, since when | Textile trading, Ratanpol, since 1988 |
| Job | Role, company type, place | Analyst, a bank's office, GIFT City |
| Gaam | Native village, often in North Gujarat | Village in Kadi taluka, Mehsana |
| Family abroad | Very common | Elder brother in New Jersey |
Area and Home
In Ahmedabad, the area tells the other side a lot. An old pol house in Khadia or Raipur, a society bungalow in Paldi or Navrangpura, a flat in a new scheme in Bopal or Gota: each paints a picture before the family meets.
So many Amdavadi families write the type of home: "Own bungalow, Vastrapur" or "Own 3 BHK flat, South Bopal". If the family still owns the old pol house, some write that too. Leave out the society name and house number. Those are for families you have met.
Gnati, Sub-Group and Diet
As across Gujarat, the gnati line names the sub-group: Visa Shrimali or Dasa Shrimali for many Jain and Vania families, Vadnagara or Visnagara for Nagar Brahmins, Kadva or Leuva for Patels, and so on. Families in Ahmedabad often look for a match within their gnati and a known circle of villages.
The diet line matters a lot in a city with a large Jain population. Write it exactly: "Jain food, no kandmool, chauvihar on most days" or "Vegetarian, eats onion and garlic". A Jain family and a Vaishnav family may both say "vegetarian" and mean different things. Our maker's Diet list has Vegetarian and Jain Food, and you can add detail in About Me.
Business Lines and the Job Line
Ahmedabad has a long business history, from the old textile mills to today's pharma, chemicals and trading firms. Many biodatas describe the family business in detail: what, where, since when, and whether the son has joined it. Write it honestly. "Chemicals trading, Naroda GIDC, father and son together" reads well.
Salaried jobs are written the usual way, with role, company type and place. GIFT City in Gandhinagar now has banks and finance offices, and families write it as the job location. Our page on the biodata for a businessman covers the business line.
Gujarati or English?
Gujarati is the choice of most Amdavadi elders. English is common for working professionals and for matches with NRI families in the US, UK or Canada, where the boy or girl may read Gujarati slowly.
On a Gujarati biodata from our maker, the labels print in Gujarati: Caste / Community as જ્ઞાતિ / સમાજ, Native Place as મૂળ વતન, Gotra as ગોત્ર, Nakshatra as નક્ષત્ર. Our Gujarati guide on the lagna biodata format is written in Gujarati.
The Top of the Biodata
Jain families usually start with નમો અરિહંતાણં or ॥ જય જિનેન્દ્ર ॥. Vaishnav families of the Pushtimarg often write ॥ શ્રીજી ॥ or ॥ જય શ્રી કૃષ્ણ ॥. Others use ॥ શ્રી ગણેશાય નમઃ ॥ or ॥ જય માતાજી ॥. All of these are in our Gujarati list.
Nagar Brahmin families greet each other with "Jay Hatkesh", after Hatkeshwar, their family deity, and many write ॥ જય હાટકેશ ॥ at the top. Use Write My Own for that, or for your kuldevi.
How Biodatas Move in Ahmedabad
Gnati organisations in Ahmedabad keep matrimonial lists, run parichay sammelans and print booklets, and their samaj wadis host many of the meetings. WhatsApp groups by gnati, by sub-group and even by pol carry most biodatas now.
NRI relatives forward biodatas to families in New Jersey, Chicago and London, and replies often come by video call. Keep one page, write the area and city, and give a parent's number. Our page on community WhatsApp biodata groups covers posting safely.
