Haldi Ceremony, Rituals, Paste, Clothes and Captions

The haldi ceremony is a pre-wedding ritual where family members apply a paste of turmeric (haldi) to the bride and the groom, usually a day or two before the wedding. Each side does it at its own home. It is a blessing for the couple, and in most families it is also the most relaxed function of the whole wedding.

It is called the haldi rasam in Hindi, pithi in Rajasthan and Gujarat, gaye holud in Bengal and maiyan in Punjab. The paste, the songs and the yellow clothes are much the same everywhere.

What Happens at a Haldi Ceremony

The order differs between families, but most haldi ceremonies follow these steps:

  1. The paste is made at home in the morning, often by the women of the family, with the bride or groom kept away from the kitchen.
  2. The bride or groom sits on a low stool or a wooden patta, in old or yellow clothes.
  3. The mother, or a married elder, applies the paste first, on the face, arms, hands and feet. In many families the first touch is with a mango leaf or a betel leaf, or with a coin.
  4. Married women of the family follow, then cousins and friends.
  5. Songs are sung through the ritual. Aunts lead, and the cousins join in loudly and out of tune.
  6. The bride or groom then has a bath, and usually does not leave the house until the wedding.

The groom's haldi usually happens first. In Bengali weddings, some of the turmeric used on the groom is sent to the bride's house along with gifts, and her gaye holud is done with it.

Most families keep the haldi ceremony the day before the wedding, or two days before. Some keep it on the morning of the wedding itself, a few hours before the muhurat. If the wedding date is not fixed yet, look up marriage dates for your city on Drik Panchang's vivah muhurat page and confirm with your priest, then count back.

Haldi Paste Recipe and Samagri

There is no single recipe. This is a common home version, enough for one person with plenty for the cousins to throw around.

IngredientAmountWhy it is used
Turmeric powder4 tablespoonsThe main ingredient, and the colour
Besan (gram flour)6 tablespoonsMakes the paste thick, and helps it wash off
Sandalwood powder1 tablespoonFragrance, and a cooling feel
Rose waterAs needed to mixFragrance
Raw milk or curd2 to 3 tablespoonsMakes the paste smooth
Mustard oil or coconut oilA few dropsMany North Indian families use mustard oil, many South Indian families coconut oil

Mix the dry powders first, then add milk and rose water a little at a time until the paste is like thick batter. Make it on the morning of the ceremony.

Use turmeric from a brand you trust, or haldi ground at home from whole roots. Loose, very bright yellow powder from an unknown seller is best avoided for something that will sit on the skin.

The samagri plate also usually has a lamp, kumkum, rice grains, a few flowers, mango or betel leaves, and a small bowl of water.

UbtanUsed across North IndiaAnother word for the paste, also used in the Muslim manjha ceremony

In Tamil Nadu, turmeric is part of the mangala snanam (holy bath) on the wedding morning, and the playful nalangu ceremony uses turmeric and kumkum. A separate "haldi function" is newer there. Many Tamil families have started it only in the last few years.

What to Wear for a Haldi Ceremony

Yellow is the usual colour, for obvious reasons. Wear something you do not mind getting stained, because haldi stains do not come out easily.

WhoCommon choices
BrideYellow cotton saree, simple yellow lehenga, or a yellow salwar suit. Floral jewellery in place of gold
GroomYellow or white kurta with pyjama, or a white dhoti and an old vest
GuestsYellow, white, orange or light green. Cotton is better than silk
ChildrenOld yellow clothes, because they will get the most paste on them

Floral jewellery, made of marigold, jasmine or orchids, is popular for brides because it costs little and can be thrown away after. Keep gold jewellery off until the bath, since turmeric discolours some settings.

Decor Ideas on a Budget

Haldi decor does not need a decorator. Most families manage with these:

  • Marigold strings on a wall or the stage, in yellow and orange
  • A low stool for the bride or groom, wrapped in a yellow cloth
  • Brass pots (lota or kalash) with mango leaves
  • Banana leaves at the entrance
  • A rangoli or kolam on the floor in turmeric and kumkum
  • Floor seating on dhurries, with a few cushions

A balcony or a terrace is enough for 30 to 40 people. Put a plastic sheet under the dhurrie, because the paste goes everywhere.

Haldi Games, Songs and Captions

Cousins often turn the end of the haldi into a game. The common one is to put haldi on the brother-in-law or the best friend without warning. Another is to hide a ring in a bowl of the paste and let the bride and groom search for it.

Every region has its own haldi songs, sung by the elder women. Ask an aunt to lead them and record them on a phone. Families who live in cities often find, years later, that it is the only recording of grandmother singing.

For photos on WhatsApp or Instagram, short captions work best. A few that families use:

  • Haldi done, wedding next
  • Yellow is our colour this week
  • Shaadi mode: on
  • Turmeric stains, happy faces
  • Pithi ki raat, poora parivar saath

Aftercare, Removing Stains and Skin Safety

Turmeric stains on skin fade in a day or two. To lift most of the colour after the ceremony:

  1. Rinse with lukewarm water, not hot water.
  2. Rub gently with a paste of besan and milk or curd, then rinse.
  3. Apply coconut oil or a plain moisturiser on dry skin.
  4. Do not scrub hard. The bride's skin needs to be calm for the wedding the next day.

For clothes, rinse the stain in cold water quickly, then wash with detergent. Drying the cloth in direct sunlight fades turmeric stains a good deal. A white kurta may not come fully clean, which is why it is better to wear an old one.

Turmeric is safe for most people, but not for every skin. The US National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes on its turmeric page that curcumin applied on the skin can cause hives or itching. Do a patch test on the inner arm a week before. If the bride or groom has sensitive skin, keep the paste away from the face, or use less turmeric and more besan.

A cousin with a rash on the wedding photos is a story told for twenty years. Do the patch test.

If any of the cousins at the haldi are themselves looking for a match, a biodata is the first step, and you can make one free here. More rituals are in our wedding rituals section, and the month-by-month wedding planning checklist shows where the haldi fits.

Common questions

What Is the Meaning of the Haldi Ceremony?

Haldi is applied to bless the bride and groom before the wedding. Families also see it as a way to make the skin glow and to keep away bad luck, and it is a chance for the family to celebrate together.

Can the Bride and Groom Have a Joint Haldi?

Yes, some couples now do a joint haldi at one venue, especially at destination weddings. Traditionally each side does it separately at its own home.

What Is Used in the Haldi Paste?

The usual paste has turmeric, besan, sandalwood powder, rose water and a little milk or curd. Some families add mustard oil or coconut oil.

Can the Bride Go Out After Haldi?

Many families ask the bride or groom to stay home after the haldi until the wedding. This is a custom, not a rule, so follow what your family elders say.

How Long Do Haldi Stains Last on Skin?

Usually one or two days. Washing with besan and milk and using coconut oil makes them fade faster.
