Sangeet Ceremony, What It Is and How to Plan It

A sangeet ceremony is a pre-wedding night of music where both families sing, dance and perform for the couple, usually one or two days before the wedding. It started as the ladies sangeet, an evening when women of the bride's family sang folk songs with a dholak at home. Today it is often the biggest party of the wedding, with a DJ, a stage and rehearsed family dances.

Sangeet means music. That is still the whole point of the evening.

Where the Sangeet Comes From

The old form is the ladies sangeet, which Punjabi, Haryanvi, Rajasthani and many North Indian families held at the bride's home in the days before the wedding. Women of the family and the neighbourhood sat on the floor, one played the dholak, and they sang wedding songs, many of them teasing the groom's family. Men were mostly kept out.

Similar evenings exist across North and West India under other names. Gujarati families hold a garba or dandiya raas night. In Rajasthan the women's songs are sung through the week of the wedding.

The big modern sangeet, with both families on one stage, became common in the 1990s and 2000s, helped along by Hindi film weddings. Many South Indian and Bengali families have taken it up only in the last few years.

Sangeet, Mehendi and Cocktail, What Is the Difference?

FunctionMain pointWho comesUsual time
MehendiHenna on the bride's hands and feetMostly women, close familyDaytime, 1 or 2 days before
Ladies sangeetFolk songs with a dholakWomen of the bride's sideEvening, at home

Many families now join the mehendi and sangeet into one day: mehendi in the afternoon, sangeet in the evening. It saves a venue booking and a day of leave for guests. Our page on the mehendi ceremony has the timing for the bride's henna.

Who Hosts the Sangeet?

Traditionally the bride's family, at their home. Today it is often hosted jointly, with costs split, or by whichever side has the venue that night. Some couples hold one sangeet with both families. In other weddings each side holds its own.

Decide this early. The hosting side usually pays for the venue, the sound, the stage and the food.

A Sample Sangeet Run of Show

This is a plan for a three-hour sangeet with both families. Adjust the times to your venue.

TimeItem
7:00 pmGuests arrive, snacks and drinks
7:30 pmWelcome by the host, a cousin or a friend
7:40 pmCouple's entry
7:50 pmBride's side performances (4 to 6 acts)
8:30 pmGroom's side performances (4 to 6 acts)
9:10 pmParents' dance, then grandparents if they are willing
9:25 pmCouple's dance
9:35 pmOpen dance floor
9:45 pmDinner
10:00 pmMusic off or moved indoors

Keep each act to three or four minutes. Twelve acts of four minutes is already 48 minutes, and nobody enjoys the eleventh medley.

The 10 pm line is there for a reason. Under the noise rules, loudspeakers are not allowed between 10 pm and 6 am, except inside closed premises such as banquet halls and community halls. The Nagaland government's notice on the Noise Pollution Rules states this plainly.

Some states allow music till midnight on a few festival days. If your sangeet is on an open lawn, ask the venue what time the police usually come by.

Planning Family Performances

  1. Fix the list of acts three or four weeks before, with one person in charge of each.
  2. Choose songs early and send the audio files to the DJ in one folder, named in order (01-bride-cousins.mp3 and so on).
  3. Book a choreographer only if the family wants polished dances. Many families manage with YouTube tutorials and a free evening each week.
  4. Hold one full rehearsal at the venue, or at least in a large room, a day before.
  5. Keep a few backup tracks for open dance, and one slow song for the grandparents.

The aunt who refuses to perform at rehearsal is often the one who takes over the floor on the night. Plan for that.

Songs for Each Side of the Family

We are not going to list one fixed playlist, because music taste changes every season. These are the kinds of songs families usually choose for each act.

Who performsSong type
Bride's cousins and friendsA fun medley teasing the groom
Groom's cousins and friendsA medley answering the bride's side
Bride's parentsAn emotional song about a daughter leaving home
Groom's parentsA cheerful welcome song for the bride
GrandparentsAn old film song from their time
The coupleA romantic duet
EveryonePunjabi bhangra numbers and folk wedding songs

Folk songs are worth keeping. Ask the elder women to sing two or three traditional songs with a dholak before the DJ starts. In many families this part is the only time the old songs are sung at all.

Budget and Venue Tips

The main costs are the venue, the sound and stage, the lights, food, the DJ and any choreographer. Each family's budget is different, so get two or three written quotes and compare what is included. Sound and lights are often bundled with the venue.

A few tips that save money:

  • Hold the sangeet at the same venue as the wedding, on the night before, and ask for a package rate.
  • Use the same decor for the mehendi and the sangeet.
  • A terrace or a society hall with a hired sound system works well for 100 guests or fewer.
  • Serve snacks through the evening and a simple dinner. People come for the dances, not the menu.

Our wedding planning checklist shows where the sangeet fits in the months before the wedding. To fix the dates of the functions, start from the muhurat, which you can look up for your city on Drik Panchang and confirm with your pandit.
