Engagement Muhurat 2026 and 2027, Sagai and Roka Dates

Neither Drik Panchang nor Prokerala, the two big panchang sites, publishes a separate engagement muhurat list for 2026 or 2027. In practice, most families take one of the vivah muhurat days for the engagement, or ask the priest for a good day.

For the rest of 2026, Drik Panchang's marriage days for New Delhi are 21, 24, 25 and 26 November and 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11 and 12 December.

A day that passes the stricter marriage checks is the easiest one for both families' priests to accept. That is the shortlist on this page.

Does an Engagement Need a Muhurat?

There is no fixed rule. Many North Indian families do not hold the roka with a formal muhurat at all, only on a day the elders find convenient and not in Rahu Kalam. Others, especially in South India, treat the nichayathartham almost like a small wedding and ask the jothidar for a proper muhurtham.

The engagement has no pheras, no kanyadaan and no saptapadi. So the strict marriage rules, such as the ban on weddings in Chaturmas or Kharmas, are not always applied to it. How strict your family is decides how much of this page you need.

Engagement and Vivah Muhurat Rules Compared

PointVivah (wedding)Engagement (roka, sagai, nichayathartham)

Kharmas and ChaturmasAvoided by most North Indian familiesDepends on family custom
LagnaPriest fixes the lagna for the pherasRarely fixed; a good time of day is usually enough

If the two families follow different customs, agree early on whose rule applies. The family hosting the engagement often asks its own priest.

For a weekend engagement, 21 November, 5 December and 12 December have long windows. After 12 December comes Kharmas, until 15 January 2027. Our post on marriage muhurat after Diwali has more on these weeks.

Can Engagement Be Done in Chaturmas or Kharmas?

Practice differs by family. Some families hold a simple roka or ring ceremony in these months, because no marriage rites take place. Others wait. There is no published panchang list either way, so this is a decision for the elders and the priest.

Our posts on Kharmas and marriage in Chaturmas give the exact dates of both periods.

Regional Names for the Engagement

NameWhere it is used
RokaPunjabi and many North Indian families, often the first formal step
Sagai, mangniHindi-speaking North India
SakharpudaMaharashtra
NichayatharthamTamil Nadu
NischitarthamAndhra Pradesh and Telangana
Gol dhanaGujarat
AshirbadBengal

The rituals differ, but the purpose is the same everywhere. The two families announce the match in front of relatives, and often fix the wedding date on the same day.

Choosing the Time of Day

On the engagement day itself, most priests avoid Rahu Kalam, a window of about an hour and a half that falls at a different time each weekday. Drik Panchang lists Rahu Kalam and the Abhijit muhurat, a midday window of about 48 minutes, for every city and day.

A practical approach is to take a marriage day from the tables above, then hold the main ritual in its window and outside Rahu Kalam. A morning ring ceremony followed by lunch fits most of these days.

How Many Days Before the Marriage Should the Engagement Be?

The panchang sets no gap. Some families hold the engagement and the wedding a few days apart, especially when relatives travel from far. Others keep months between them so that the hall, the cards and the jewellery can be arranged. Pick the gap that suits the bookings, then fit both days to the muhurat list.

The biodata usually comes before any of this. If yours is not ready, you can make a marriage biodata with rasi, nakshatra and lagna filled in, and share it as a PDF or a JPG.

Common questions

What Are the Engagement Muhurat Dates in 2026?

There is no separate published list. Drik Panchang's marriage days for the rest of 2026 are 21, 24, 25 and 26 November and 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11 and 12 December, and most families pick one of these.

Is a Muhurat Needed for Roka?

Not always. Many families hold the roka on a convenient day outside Rahu Kalam. Families who want more certainty use a marriage muhurat day.

Can Engagement Be Done in Kharmas?

It depends on family custom. Kharmas runs from 16 December 2026 to 14 January 2027, and some families avoid engagements in it too.

Which Nakshatras Are Good for Sagai?

Families who check the nakshatra usually use the same list as for marriage. Drik Panchang names 11: Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati.

Is 21 November 2026 Good for Engagement?

Yes, on both counts. It is the first marriage muhurat after Dev Uthani Ekadashi on Drik Panchang, and it is also Tulasi Vivah day.
