Can We Marry in Chaturmas? Chaturmas 2027 Dates and Rules

Most North Indian Hindu families do not hold weddings in Chaturmas, and the major panchangs list no marriage dates in it. In 2027 Chaturmas runs from Devshayani Ekadashi on 14 July to Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 10 November. Drik Panchang's last marriage date before it is 12 July 2027, and the next one is 10 November.

A court or registered marriage is a different matter. The law has no rule about Chaturmas.

What Is Chaturmas?

Chaturmas means "four months". It is the stretch of four lunar months from Devshayani Ekadashi, in Ashadha, to Dev Uthani or Prabodhini Ekadashi, in Kartika. Vaishnava tradition holds that Vishnu goes into yogic sleep on the first Ekadashi and wakes on the second, which is why the second is also called Devutthana, the day the god rises.

The period covers the monsoon months of Shravana, Bhadrapada and Ashwin. It is a time of fasting, vows and festivals, from Raksha Bandhan and Janmashtami to Navratri and Diwali. It is not a time for weddings in most of North India.

All dates are from Drik Panchang for New Delhi. Its marriage calendar marks 13 July 2027 as partly inside Chaturmas, and every day from 14 July to 8 November as closed. Chaturmas 2026, for comparison, ran from 25 July to 20 November 2026.

Why Are Weddings Avoided in Chaturmas?

Drik Panchang's note on choosing marriage dates says marriage rituals are not held during Chaturmas, even though it otherwise checks only the solar month. The reason given in tradition is that a wedding invokes Vishnu as witness, and the god is resting.

In 2027 there are other reasons too, and they overlap. Venus is set (Shukra asta) from 21 July to 9 September 2027, and Jupiter from 17 August to 13 September.

The Sun is in Simha and then Kanya, two solar months that are closed for marriage on their own. Pitru Paksha, the fortnight for ancestors, falls from 16 to 29 September. So even a family that does not observe Chaturmas would find very few days in these months on Drik Panchang's rules.

Do All Panchangs Agree on the Edges?

Not exactly. Prokerala's 2027 marriage page lists two windows just after Devshayani Ekadashi: 14 July, from 1:10 pm to 3:18 am the next morning, in Anuradha, and 16 July, from 5:39 am to 1:35 pm, in Moola. Drik Panchang does not list either.

If a priest offers you a date in mid-July 2027, ask which panchang he is following and whether your family observes Chaturmas. For most North Indian families the answer will be no wedding after 12 July.

Exceptions by Region and Community

Chaturmas rules are strongest in North and Central India. Practice in the south and east is different in places.

In Kerala, Chingam (mid-August to mid-September) is a popular month for weddings, and many Malayali families go by the Malayalam calendar, not Chaturmas.

Tamil calendars also have their own list of muhurtham days, and the months avoided there are mainly Aadi and Margazhi. Telugu and Kannada families usually avoid Ashada masam, which falls at the start of Chaturmas, and many of them hold weddings again in Shravana as per their own panchangam.

Jain families observe Chaturmas as the rainy-season stay of monks and nuns, a time of extra religious practice. Muslim, Christian and Sikh families do not follow it at all.

So the honest answer to "can we marry in Chaturmas" is: it depends on the calendar your family follows. If the families are from different regions, agree on one panchang first.

Court Marriage and Registration During Chaturmas

The Special Marriage Act, 1954 has no rule about Chaturmas or any other part of the Hindu calendar. Under the Act, the couple gives notice to the Marriage Officer (Section 5), the notice is published, and objections can be raised within 30 days (Section 7). The marriage can then be solemnised at the office on a working day. You can read the Act on India Code.

Registration of a Hindu marriage under state rules is also not tied to the panchang. Many couples register in Chaturmas and hold the religious ceremony after Dev Uthani. Our court marriage guide explains the steps.

Is Engagement Allowed in Chaturmas?

Family custom decides this. Drik Panchang and Prokerala publish no engagement list, so there is no single rule to point to. Some families hold a small roka or ring ceremony in Chaturmas, since no pheras take place. Others wait for Dev Uthani.

If you want the safest path, hold the engagement before 12 July or after 10 November 2027. Our engagement muhurat guide explains the choices.

What Families Do in These Four Months

Chaturmas is when many matches are made. Families use the gap to exchange biodatas, match horoscopes, meet, and settle the details, so that the date can be fixed for November or December.

  1. Send the biodata out early. You can make a marriage biodata with rasi, nakshatra and lagna filled in from the birth details, and share it as a PDF or a JPG.
  2. Get the horoscopes matched. Our kundli milan guide explains the 36-point method.
  3. Book the hall early for the first dates after Chaturmas. Our November 2027 list has all 11.
  4. If you want a wedding before the gap, look at our June 2027 list. June has 16 dates, and July has 6 more up to 12 July.

Our page on inauspicious time for marriage shows Chaturmas next to every other closed period of the year.
