Marriage registration in West Bengal starts online on rgmwb.gov.in, the portal of the Registrar General of Marriages under the state's Law Department. You choose the Act, pick a Marriage Officer near your police station, upload documents, pay the fee, and then appear before the officer with three witnesses.
A Hindu wedding already held can be registered under the Hindu Marriage Act. Couples of different religions, or anyone who wants a civil marriage, use the Special Marriage Act. Both go through the same portal.
Who Registers Marriages in West Bengal
In West Bengal, marriages are registered by Marriage Officers appointed by the state, not by courts or lawyers. The portal's instructions page says you apply to a Non-Official or Ex-Officio Marriage Officer, or to a Hindu Marriage Registrar for a Hindu marriage.
The portal's "Search MO" page lists the Marriage Officers for each police station area, with names, phone numbers and photos. A separate "Non Functional MO" list shows officers who are not working.
The Registrar General's own leaflet is blunt about this. No advocate or lawyer can register your marriage, and marriages are not registered in any court of law. A Marriage Officer whose name is not on the portal is, in the leaflet's words, a fake. So check any name you are given against the Search MO page, photo and all.
Registration is also not optional. The same leaflet says it is mandatory for socially married couples, under the Supreme Court's order of 14 February 2006 read with the state's gazette notification of 29 January 2008. Online registration has been compulsory in West Bengal since 1 June 2019.
Which Act Fits Your Marriage
The portal lists five laws. Most couples use one of the first three.
| Your situation | Act on the portal | Timeline from the portal |
|---|---|---|
| Hindu, Sikh, Jain or Buddhist couple, wedding already done | Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 | Apply after the social marriage. 7 days for objections. Registration within 6 calendar months of the application |
| Any couple, marriage to be done before the officer | Special Marriage Act, 1954, section 13 | Solemnisation can happen 30 days after the notice, and within 3 months of the notice period |
| Any couple, religious wedding already done, want it registered under the special law | Special Marriage Act, 1954, section 16 | Apply at least 30 days after the marriage. 30 days for objections. Registration within 6 months |
| Christian couple | Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872 | The portal's own conditions apply |
| Parsi couple | Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act, 1936 | Ashirvad by a priest with two Parsi witnesses |
If you are not sure which to pick, our page on Hindu Marriage Act vs Special Marriage Act explains the difference in plain words.
How to Apply Online, Step by Step
These steps follow the portal's own instructions page.
- Open rgmwb.gov.in and click "Register Your Marriage" (the Apply Online link).
- Select the Act that applies to you.
- Search for a Marriage Officer or Hindu Marriage Registrar in your police station area and select one.
- Fill in the notice or application pages for both of you. Upload each person's signature, a signed photograph (signature at the side, away from the face), proof of birth and proof of residential address.
- You get an email with an application serial number. Call the Marriage Officer and meet him with the original documents and the fee.
- The officer publishes the notice for the objection period and then fixes a date.
- On that date, both of you and three witnesses appear before the officer. All five sign, and all five give a left thumb impression on a biometric device.
- A joint photograph of the officer with the couple is uploaded, and the certificate is then generated.
You can follow the request on the portal's "Application Status" page.
Documents and Witnesses
The Registrar General's leaflet names four uploads for each of you: full signature, a signed photograph, proof of birth and proof of residential address. Certificates go up as PDF files, and photos as PNG.
For proof of birth, families usually use a birth certificate, the Madhyamik admit card or a passport. For address, Aadhaar or the voter ID. A divorced or widowed party should also carry the divorce decree or the spouse's death certificate. The Marriage Officer may ask for more, and you must show the originals of everything you uploaded.
Three witnesses are needed. The portal says each witness must bring an original photo ID with a full address, preferably Aadhaar, EPIC (voter ID), passport or driving licence. Their Aadhaar numbers and signatures are recorded.
Our documents required for marriage registration page has the all-India list, if you want to compare.
Marriage Registration Fees in West Bengal
The portal has a "Fees Structure" page, but we could not read its table when we checked on 16 October 2026, so we are not quoting a registration fee here. Look at that page, or ask the Marriage Officer, before you pay. The leaflet says the fee is paid to the Marriage Officer when you meet him, and the portal also takes payments through GRIPS, the state's online payment system.
One fee we did see on the instructions page: a correction to the certificate costs ₹100 for a single field and ₹200 for more than one field. Corrections are possible only within 30 days of registration, and only for typing or clerical mistakes. New details cannot be added later.
Be careful of anyone who quotes a large "package" amount. Compare it with the fee chart on the portal, and if you pay through GRIPS, check the GRN (payment reference) on the portal's GRN Status page.
Getting the Certificate
The leaflet says the Marriage Officer generates the certificate with a digital signature within 3 days of the registration, under the West Bengal Right to Public Services Act, 2013. It comes as a password-protected file to the email IDs you registered with. The portal's instructions page adds that you get two physical copies within 3 days.
If you lose the certificate later, the portal has a "Certified Copy of Marriage Records" service and a "Search Marriage Records" page.
Muslim Marriage Certificate in West Bengal
Muslim nikahs in West Bengal are usually recorded by a Muslim marriage registrar licensed by the state, often called the kazi or qazi, under the Bengal Muhammadan Marriages and Divorces Registration Act, 1876. The kazi who reads the nikah, or the registrar for your area, enters it in his register and gives a certificate.
The rgmwb.gov.in portal lists the Hindu, Special, Christian and Parsi Acts. We did not find a Muslim registration option on it. So when people search for "muslim marriage certificate west bengal online", the honest answer is this: the kazi's certificate is not issued through that portal.
A Muslim couple who wants a certificate from the state portal can apply under section 16 of the Special Marriage Act, at least 30 days after the nikah. That registers the existing marriage without a new ceremony. It also brings the marriage under the Special Marriage Act's rules on divorce and succession, so read about that before you choose it.
After the Certificate
Couples who married across caste lines can then apply for the state's incentive, explained on our inter-caste marriage scheme in West Bengal page.
