In Vedic astrology, the usual reasons given for delay in marriage are a troubled 7th house or 7th lord, and Saturn placed in or aspecting the 7th house. Astrologers also point to manglik dosha, Rahu or Ketu across the 1st and 7th houses, and a weak Venus (for a man) or Jupiter (for a woman). They then time the marriage by the running dasha. No single placement decides it alone.
We explain how these are read so families can follow what the jothidar or pandit is saying. We do not claim that a chart can fix a date, and you should be careful of anyone who promises one.
How Astrologers Read Marriage Timing
An astrologer looks at three layers, in this order.
| Layer | What is checked |
|---|---|
| Promise | Does the chart show marriage at all? The 7th house, its lord, Venus and Jupiter |
| Obstacles | Is there a delaying factor? Saturn, Mars, Rahu, Ketu, afflictions to the 7th |
| Timing | When does a favourable dasha and transit come? |
Most charts show marriage. The question astrologers argue about is timing, and that is where the delay readings come from.
One warning before anything else. Everything below depends on an accurate time of birth. A time off by 30 minutes can shift the lagna (ascendant), and then every house moves with it. Check the time on the birth certificate or hospital record before you trust any reading.
The 7th House and Its Lord
The 7th house is the house of marriage and partnership. Astrologers count it from the lagna, and many also check it from the Moon.
They look at:
- which planets sit in the 7th house
- which planets aspect it
- where the 7th lord (the planet ruling the sign in the 7th) is placed
- whether the 7th lord is strong, weak, combust or in a hard house such as the 6th, 8th or 12th
Prokerala's marriage calculator page puts it simply: for men, the 7th house, its lord and Venus are read for the time and nature of marriage. A weak or afflicted 7th lord is one of the most quoted reasons for delay.
Saturn (Shani) and Delay
Saturn is the planet astrologers most often name for a late marriage. Saturn is slow and is linked with delay, duty and patience.
Readings you will commonly hear:
- Saturn in the 7th house: marriage comes late, often after 28 to 30, and is described as stable once it happens.
- Saturn aspecting the 7th house or the 7th lord: similar, a slower path.
- Saturn joined with the 7th lord or Venus: delay, or a partner who is older or more serious.
Notice the pattern. Saturn is read as "late", not "never". Many astrologers in Tamil Nadu and Kerala say the same about Sani in the 7th: a late marriage, not a failed one.
Mars, Manglik Dosha and Delay
Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house gives manglik dosha (chevvai dosham in Tamil, kuja dosha in Telugu and Kannada). The mangal dosha calculator on Drik Panchang lists these six houses and says the check should be done from the lagna, the Moon and Venus.
Manglik dosha delays marriage in two ways. Astrologers read it as an obstacle in itself. And many families refuse non-matching manglik proposals, so the pool of matches shrinks. The second reason is often the bigger one.
Many charts have a cancellation that the astrologer can point out. Our guide to manglik dosha remedies covers what families do.
Rahu, Ketu and the 7th House
Rahu and Ketu always sit opposite each other. When they fall across the 1st and 7th houses, astrologers often read it as unusual circumstances around marriage: a delay, a sudden match, a partner from a different background, or a marriage away from home.
Rahu in the 7th is also linked with unconventional choices, such as an inter-caste or inter-religion match. Ketu in the 7th is read by some as detachment or a lack of interest in marriage for a period.
These readings vary a lot between astrologers. Ask yours to explain the logic, not just the result.
Venus and Jupiter for Marriage
Venus (Shukra) is read as the planet of marriage and romance, especially in a man's chart. Jupiter (Guru) is read as the husband's significator in a woman's chart.
| Planet | Read as | Signs of weakness astrologers mention |
|---|---|---|
| Venus | The wife, love, comfort | Combust (too close to the Sun), debilitated in Virgo, in the 6th, 8th or 12th |
| Jupiter | The husband, blessings, wisdom | Debilitated in Capricorn, combust, afflicted by Saturn or Rahu |
A strong Jupiter aspecting the 7th house is often read as protection, even when other factors suggest delay.
Dasha and Transit Timing
The Vimshottari dasha is the system of planetary periods most astrologers in India use to time events. Each person runs through the periods of nine planets over 120 years.
For marriage, astrologers look for a dasha or antardasha (sub-period) of:
- the 7th lord
- a planet sitting in the 7th house
- Venus or Jupiter
- the lord of the lagna or of the 2nd house (family)
Then they check transits. Many look for Jupiter's transit over or aspecting the 7th house or the 7th lord. When the dasha and the transit agree, they call it a likely window.
A "delay" reading often just means the favourable dasha comes later. A 26-year-old running a Saturn period that ends at 29 may be told "after 29". That is a timing call, not a curse.
Worked Example, Reading a Chart
Here is a made-up chart, for illustration only. It is not a real person.
| Detail | Example |
|---|---|
| Lagna | Aries (Mesha) |
| 7th house | Libra (Thula), ruled by Venus |
| Planets in the 7th | Saturn (exalted in Libra) |
| Venus | In the 12th house, Pisces |
| Jupiter | In the 9th house, aspecting the 1st, 3rd and 5th |
| Current dasha at age 27 | Rahu, with Jupiter's period starting at 30 |
How an astrologer would usually read it:
- The 7th house has exalted Saturn. Many astrologers read this as late but stable.
- The 7th lord, Venus, is in the 12th, which is a hard house, but exalted in Pisces. Mixed.
- Jupiter does not aspect the 7th. No extra protection there.
- The running Rahu period is not tied to the 7th house in this chart.
- Jupiter's period starts at 30, and Jupiter is a natural benefic for marriage.
A typical summary: "Marriage likely after 29 or 30, when Jupiter's period begins." Another astrologer could weigh Venus in Pisces more and say 28. That is the honest picture of how these readings work.
What One Placement Can and Cannot Say
One placement rarely blocks marriage on its own. Saturn in the 7th, a manglik chart or Rahu in the 7th are each found in a large share of all charts. People with each of them marry every day.
The parts of a delay that the family can change are usually outside the chart: narrow filters, a weak biodata, slow replies. Our guide on delay in marriage lists those. If you want to understand timing better, read when will I get married, and for what families do about it, see remedies for delay in marriage.

Common questions
Which Planet Is Responsible for Delay in Marriage?
Saturn is named most often, followed by Mars (through manglik dosha), Rahu and Ketu. Astrologers also look at a weak 7th lord, Venus or Jupiter. No single planet decides it alone.
Does Saturn in the 7th House Delay Marriage?
Astrologers usually read Saturn in the 7th as a later marriage, often after 28 to 30, that tends to be stable. It is read as late, not as no marriage.
Can Manglik Dosha Delay Marriage?
Astrologers read it as an obstacle, and many families reject non-manglik or non-matching proposals, which also shrinks the choices. Many charts have cancellations, so get it checked properly.
Which Dasha Brings Marriage?
Astrologers often look at the dasha or sub-period of the 7th lord, a planet in the 7th, Venus or Jupiter, along with Jupiter's transit over the 7th house.
Does Rahu or Ketu in the 7th House Delay Marriage?
Some astrologers read Rahu or Ketu in the 7th as delay or unusual circumstances around marriage. Readings differ widely, so ask for the reasoning.
