Delay in marriage usually has two kinds of reasons. Astrologers look at the 7th house of the horoscope, Saturn, Mars and Venus. In daily life the common causes are much plainer: filters that are too narrow, a biodata that reaches too few families, and long gaps between proposals. Most families need to check both, and the everyday side is the one they can fix this week.
This page is for parents who feel the rishtas are not coming, and for sons and daughters tired of hearing "your time will come".
What Counts as a Delayed Marriage?
There is no official age at which a marriage counts as delayed. The only age in law is the minimum: 21 years for a man and 18 for a woman, under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006.
In practice, families start worrying when proposals have been going on for a year or two with no result, or when cousins of the same age are all married. A boy of 31 doing his MD and a girl of 29 working in Bengaluru are not late by any rule. They are late only in the eyes of relatives at a function.
So the first question is not "Is something wrong?" It is "What has the search looked like for the last 12 months?"
Astrological Reasons for Delay in Marriage
When a family takes the jathagam or kundli to an astrologer, these are the points most astrologers check. We list them so you know what is being discussed, not to say they decide the outcome.
| Factor | What the astrologer looks at |
|---|---|
| 7th house | The house of marriage. Planets sitting in it, and planets aspecting it |
| 7th lord | The planet ruling the 7th house, and whether it is weak or badly placed |
| Saturn (Shani) | Saturn in or aspecting the 7th house is the most quoted reason for "late but stable" marriage |
| Mars (Mangal) | Mars in certain houses gives manglik dosha (chevvai dosham in Tamil), which narrows the matches families accept |
| Venus (Shukra) | Seen as the marriage planet, especially in a man's chart |
| Jupiter (Guru) | Seen as the husband's planet in a woman's chart |
| Rahu and Ketu | Placed across the 1st and 7th houses, they are often named in delay readings |
| Dasha | The running planetary period. Astrologers time marriage by it |
Two cautions. Different astrologers often read the same chart differently. And a chart is only as good as the birth time on it. A time that is off by 30 minutes can move the lagna, and with it every house above.
If you want to understand how marriage timing is read from a chart, our guide on when will I get married walks through the method.
Practical Reasons Families Overlook
Very often the delay sits in the search itself. Look at this list honestly, one line at a time.
- The filters are narrow. Same sub-caste, same district, government job only, height above a fixed number, no manglik. Each filter is fair on its own. Together they leave very few families.
- The biodata reaches too few people. Five relatives and one temple notice board are not enough.
- The biodata is weak. An old photo, no family details, a vague job line, or a missing time of birth makes the other side skip it.
- Replies are slow. A family that takes three weeks to call back has often lost the proposal.
- The horoscope rules are strict. Rejecting every match below a certain score, or every manglik match, cuts the list hard.
- Career timing. A daughter preparing for UPSC or a son abroad on a two-year contract may not be ready, and families keep the search half-open for years.
- The son or daughter is not on board. If the person getting married keeps saying no without a reason, talk to them first.
None of these show up in a horoscope. All of them can be changed by the family.
Is It the Chart, the Criteria or the Profile?
Answer these with numbers, not feelings.
| Question | What the answer tells you |
|---|---|
| How many biodatas did you send in the last six months? | A small number means the reach is low |
| How many families replied? | Few replies point to the biodata or the filters |
| How many meetings happened? | Replies but no meetings point to the photo, job or family details |
| How many meetings ended in a no from your side? | Many no's from you point to the criteria |
| How many ended in a no from their side? | Ask a trusted relative what they heard |
| How many matches were dropped only for the horoscope? | If most were, talk to a second astrologer |
Write the numbers in a notebook. In most homes this one exercise settles arguments faster than any reading.
Remedies Families Commonly Follow
Many families also turn to traditional remedies: the Katyayani mantra, Solah Somvar or Thursday fasts, a puja at a temple known for marriage prayers, or a dosha parihara suggested by their astrologer. We cover these, with cautions about costly pujas, in our post on remedies for delay in marriage.
Do any remedy alongside the practical steps below, not instead of them. A fast does not send out biodatas.
Temples Known for Marriage Prayers
Families across India visit temples linked to marriage. In Tamil Nadu, Thirumanancheri near Kuthalam in Mayiladuthurai district and the Nithya Kalyana Perumal temple at Thiruvidanthai on the East Coast Road near Chennai are two names you will hear from relatives. North Indian families often pray to Gauri, Katyayani or Shiva-Parvati at their family temple.
A temple visit is a matter of faith. Go if it gives the family hope and calm. Be careful of anyone at a temple who asks for large sums for a "guaranteed" result.
Fix the Practical Side First
These steps cost little, and you can start on all of them this week.
Rewrite the Biodata
Use a recent photo, taken in daylight, without heavy filters. Fill in every family member's line, the native place, education with the college name and the job with the company and city. Add the date, time and place of birth so the other side's astrologer can check the match without calling you. Our marriage biodata format lists every section families expect.
You can make the biodata here, pick a design, and send it as a PDF or a JPG image on WhatsApp.
Loosen One Filter at a Time
Do not drop everything at once. Widen the area from one district to the whole state. Or accept a private job along with government jobs. Or let the astrologer consider a match a few points below your old cut-off. Then watch the number of replies for two months.
Widen the Reach
Send the biodata to more relatives, community groups and one or two matrimony sites. Our post on questions to ask before an arranged marriage helps once the meetings start.
Online search brings its own risk. If anyone you meet through a site or a group asks for money, stop, and report it to the national cyber crime helpline, 1930, or on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
Reply Within a Week
Set a rule at home. Every proposal gets a yes, a no or a "we need more time" within seven days. Families notice who replies.
When to Talk to an Astrologer, a Counsellor or a Matchmaker
Talk to an astrologer when the horoscope is the main reason matches are being dropped. Ask for the reasoning in plain words, and get a second opinion before paying for any big puja.
Talk to a counsellor when the son or daughter is anxious, low, or keeps refusing without a reason. Tele-MANAS, the government's free mental health helpline, answers on 14416, as listed on the Tele-MANAS website. Calling about stress over marriage is nothing to hide.
Talk to a matchmaker, a community marriage bureau or a trusted elder when the family simply does not know enough families. Reach is their job.
Other hard situations, from family opposition to second marriage, are covered in our marriage problems section.
Common questions
Why Is My Marriage Getting Delayed?
Usually because of a mix of narrow filters, low reach and slow replies, and sometimes a strict horoscope rule. Astrologers may also point to Saturn, Mars or the 7th house in the chart. Check the practical side first, because you can change it.
Is Delay in Marriage Due to Saturn or Manglik Dosha?
Astrologers often name Saturn in the 7th house, or manglik dosha, as reasons. Manglik status can also delay things for a plain reason: many families reject manglik matches outright, so fewer proposals go through.
At What Age Is Marriage Considered Delayed in India?
There is no fixed age. The law only sets the minimum, 21 for men and 18 for women. A delay is better measured by how long the search has been running without results.
What Are the Remedies for Delay in Marriage?
Families follow mantras, fasts, temple visits and dosha pariharas. Our remedies guide lists them with cautions. Pair any remedy with a better biodata and wider reach.
Can a Better Biodata Really Help?
Yes. The biodata is what the other family sees before they decide to call. A clear photo, full family details and the birth details for matching all reduce the reasons to skip it. Our marriage biodata sample shows two biodatas with the family and birth details filled in full.
