When Will I Get Married? How Marriage Timing Is Read from a Kundli

No chart or calculator can give the exact date you will get married. What a Vedic astrologer does is look for a likely window.

The astrologer checks the 7th house of your kundli and its lord, Venus and Jupiter, the dasha (planetary period) running at the time, and the transits of Jupiter and Saturn. Where these line up, the astrologer says marriage is likely. It is a reading, not a promise.

This page explains how that reading is done, so you can follow what the jothidar or pandit is telling you, and judge how much weight to give it.

Can Marriage Timing Be Predicted?

Astrologers believe the horoscope shows periods when marriage is more likely. There is no scientific study that proves this, and two astrologers can give two different answers for the same chart.

Families still ask "shadi kab hogi?" for a sensible reason. A rough window helps them plan, and a reading often gives an anxious son or daughter some hope. Treat the answer as one input. The search, the biodata and the people you meet decide the rest.

What Details Does the Astrologer Need?

A marriage prediction needs three things, and the second matters most.

DetailWhy it is needed
Date of birthGives the positions of the planets and the Moon's nakshatra
Exact time of birthFixes the lagna (ascendant), and so every house, including the 7th
Place of birthNeeded to work out the lagna for that town's latitude and longitude

The lagna changes about every two hours. A birth time guessed as "early morning" can put you in the wrong lagna, and then the 7th house the astrologer reads is the wrong house. Look for the time on the hospital discharge card, the birth certificate, or the old jathagam written by the family astrologer.

Hello Biodata works out rasi, nakshatra and lagna from the date, time and place of birth, using the Lahiri ayanamsa. You can make a biodata with the horoscope filled in and send it to the astrologer, so the details are written down once and correctly.

The 7th House, Its Lord, Venus and Jupiter

The 7th house from the lagna is the house of marriage. Astrologers read:

  1. Planets sitting in the 7th house.
  2. Planets that aspect (cast their sight on) the 7th house. Saturn's aspect is often linked to a later marriage.
  3. The 7th lord, the planet that rules the sign in the 7th house, and where it sits.
  4. Venus (Shukra), seen as the planet of marriage, mostly read in a man's chart.
  5. Jupiter (Guru), seen as the husband's planet in a woman's chart.

Many astrologers also look at the navamsa, the D9 chart, in which each sign is split into nine parts. The navamsa is used to confirm what the main chart shows about marriage.

Dasha Periods That Bring Marriage

The Vimshottari dasha is the planetary period system most Indian astrologers use. It runs on a 120-year cycle, split among nine planets, and the period you start life in depends on the Moon's nakshatra at birth.

PlanetMahadasha length
Ketu7 years
Venus20 years
Sun6 years
Moon10 years
Mars7 years
Rahu18 years
Jupiter16 years
Saturn19 years
Mercury17 years

Each mahadasha is split into smaller periods called antardasha or bhukti. For marriage, astrologers look for a mahadasha or antardasha of the 7th lord, of Venus, of a planet in the 7th house, or of a planet linked to the 7th lord. When such a period falls in your 20s or early 30s, it is usually read as a likely window.

Jupiter and Saturn Transits

A transit (gochar) is where a planet is moving in the sky now, as opposed to where it was at birth.

Jupiter takes about 12 years to go round the zodiac, so it spends roughly one year in each sign. Saturn takes about 29.5 years, roughly two and a half years per sign.

Many astrologers check when both of them touch the 7th house, its lord or the lagna at the same time, by sign or by aspect. They call this double transit, and they treat it as a timing signal alongside the dasha.

A Worked Example

Here is a made-up chart to show the method. It is not a real person.

Say the lagna is Mesha (Aries). The 7th house is then Tula (Libra), and its lord is Venus. Venus sits in the 10th house. The Moon is in a nakshatra that starts life in a Rahu mahadasha.

An astrologer would reason like this:

  1. The 7th lord is Venus, so a Venus antardasha is a strong marker.
  2. Rahu mahadasha is followed by Jupiter mahadasha. If the Rahu period ends at age 21, Jupiter mahadasha runs from 21 to 37.
  3. Inside Jupiter mahadasha, the Venus antardasha comes after the sub-periods of Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury and Ketu, about 7 years and 10 months in. So it runs from roughly age 29 to 31 and a half, and the astrologer marks that as the main window.
  4. Within that window, the astrologer checks the year when Jupiter and Saturn together influence Tula or Venus, and names it as the most likely year.

Notice how many "ifs" there are. Change the birth time by an hour and the lagna may become Vrishabha, the 7th lord becomes Mars, and the whole answer changes. That is why the birth time matters more than anything else.

Calculators and AI Chatbots, What They Miss

Online "marriage age calculators" run a fixed set of rules on your birth details and print a year or an age. They cannot ask whether your birth time is reliable, and they do not weigh the chart as a whole.

AI chatbots are weaker still. A chatbot that gives you a marriage year without showing the chart it worked out is not calculating anything. It is producing a likely-sounding sentence. If you use any tool, ask it to show the lagna, the 7th lord and the dasha periods, and check those against a proper jathagam.

Neither tool can tell you whom you will marry, or whether it will be a love or arranged marriage, with any reliability. Astrologers who answer those questions are giving an opinion.

How to Use a Prediction Sensibly

  1. Get the birth time right before anything else.
  2. If you see an astrologer, ask for the reasoning in plain words: which dasha, which transit, which years.
  3. Take a second opinion if the answer worries you.
  4. Do not stop the search because a reading says "after 32". Keep sending the biodata.
  5. If the waiting is wearing someone down, talk to a counsellor. Tele-MANAS, the government's free mental health helpline, answers on 14416, as listed on the Tele-MANAS website.

If the search has been long, our guide to delay in marriage lists the everyday causes worth checking alongside the chart. Families who also want to try traditional practices can read our remedies for delay in marriage.

Common questions

When Will I Get Married According to My Date of Birth?

A date of birth alone is not enough. An astrologer also needs the exact time and place of birth to fix the lagna, then reads the 7th house, the dasha and transits for a likely window.

How Do Astrologers Predict Marriage Age?

They look for a dasha or antardasha of the 7th lord, Venus or a planet linked to the 7th house, and then check when Jupiter and Saturn transit the 7th house or its lord. The overlap is read as the likely period.

Is a Marriage Age Calculator Accurate?

It applies fixed rules and cannot judge your chart as a whole or check your birth time. Use it as a rough pointer at most. The legal minimum age, 21 for men and 18 for women under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, is the only age that is fixed.

Which Dasha Indicates Marriage?

Astrologers usually point to the dasha or antardasha of the 7th lord, of Venus, of a planet sitting in the 7th house, or of Jupiter in a woman's chart.

Can My Kundli Tell Whom I Will Marry?

Astrologers describe the likely nature or background of the spouse from the 7th house, but no chart can name a person. Treat such readings as opinion.
