Manglik Dosha Remedies Before Marriage

Manglik Dosha Remedies Before Marriage

The manglik dosha remedies most families follow before marriage are a mangal shanti puja and fasting and Hanuman worship on Tuesdays. Some also do a symbolic marriage, called kumbh vivah for a girl or ark vivah for a boy. The first step, though, is to confirm the dosha, because many charts called manglik turn out to have a cancellation.

This page describes what families do. It does not promise results, and no honest astrologer will either.

Before Any Remedy, Confirm the Dosha

Manglik dosha is decided by where Mars sits: the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. Astrologers count these houses differently by region, and from up to three charts, the lagna, the moon and Venus. Our page on what is manglik explains the rule.

So before booking any puja, ask your astrologer four things:

  1. From which chart is the dosha seen, lagna, moon or Venus?
  2. Is the 1st or the 2nd house involved? Those two are counted differently in North and South India.
  3. Does any cancellation rule apply? The Drik Panchang mangal dosha page says many charts have Mars cancelled by other planets' positions.
  4. Is the other side also manglik? If both are, most astrologers say no remedy is needed at all.

A second opinion is cheap. One more astrologer, with the same birth time, often settles the question.

Puja-Based Remedies

A puja is the remedy most families choose, and it is the one most astrologers suggest first.

PujaWhat happensWhere families go
Mangal shanti puja (mangal dosh nivaran)A priest does a homam or puja for Mars, often on a TuesdayFamily temple, or a Mars temple
Navagraha pujaWorship of all nine planets togetherAny temple with a navagraha shrine
Bhat pujaCooked rice is offered over the ShivlingMangalnath temple, Ujjain
Angaraka worshipPrayer and abhishekam at the Mars shrineVaitheeswaran Koil, Tamil Nadu

Fees differ from temple to temple and change often. Ask the temple office directly, and get a receipt.

Famous Temples for Mangal Dosha

Two temples are named most often.

Mangalnath temple in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, stands on the bank of the Shipra river. Many believe it marks the birthplace of Mars. According to the Madhya Pradesh Tourism page on the temple, it is open daily, pujas are generally held between 7 am and 3 pm, and Tuesdays are considered especially auspicious. Families from all over North and Central India go there for mangal dosh puja.

Vaitheeswaran Koil, near Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu, is a Shiva temple and one of the nine Navagraha temples of the Kaveri delta. It is the temple for Angaraka, or Sevvai (Mars). Tamil families with chevvai dosham often go there on a Tuesday.

You do not have to travel. Many family priests do the same mangal shanti puja at the kuladeivam temple or at home.

Mantras and Fasting

Tuesday is Mars's day, so the simple remedies fall on Tuesdays.

  • Fasting on Tuesdays, often for a fixed number of weeks that the astrologer suggests
  • Reading the Hanuman Chalisa, or visiting a Hanuman temple on Tuesdays
  • Chanting a Mars mantra such as "Om Angarakaya Namah", usually 108 times with a mala
  • Giving red lentils (masoor dal), jaggery or red cloth in charity on Tuesdays

These cost little and harm no one. Many families do them alongside a puja, and some do only these.

Symbolic Marriages, Kumbh, Ark and Vishnu Vivah

A symbolic marriage is the remedy people ask about most. The idea is that the dosha's effect falls on the first "marriage", so the real marriage is free of it.

NameFor whomWhat it is
Kumbh vivahA manglik girlMarriage to a clay pot (kumbh), with Vishnu invoked in it
Vishnu vivahA manglik girlMarriage to an idol of Vishnu
Peepal or banana tree vivahA manglik girlMarriage to a peepal or banana tree
Ark vivahA manglik boyMarriage to the ark plant (Calotropis, also called aak or erukku)

The ritual is done by a priest, usually a few days or weeks before the real wedding, in private, with close family only. The pot or the plant is then given away or immersed, as the priest says.

No rule makes kumbh vivah compulsory. Some astrologers insist on it for a strong dosha, others think a puja is enough, and others say it is not needed when both are manglik. If it gives the family peace, many do it.

Lal Kitab Remedies

Lal Kitab is a book of astrology popular in Punjab and North India. Its remedies, called totke or upay, are small daily acts, not big pujas.

The remedy depends on the house Mars sits in, so a Lal Kitab follower gives different advice for Mars in the 7th house and Mars in the 8th. There is no single Lal Kitab remedy for every manglik chart, whatever a website may list. Ask someone who follows the book, and follow one system at a time.

Gemstones, When Astrologers Suggest Red Coral

Some astrologers suggest red coral (moonga) for Mars, set in a ring and worn on a Tuesday. Others never suggest gems for a dosha. A gemstone is the most expensive remedy and the easiest to be cheated on.

If you buy one, buy from a known jeweller, ask for a lab certificate, and decide the budget before you walk in. A red coral will not change where Mars sits in the chart, and no one can show that it does more than a puja.

Remedies for Manglik Girls and Boys

The dosha is the same for both, and so are most remedies: puja, fasting, mantra and charity. Only the symbolic marriage differs, kumbh vivah or Vishnu vivah for a girl and ark vivah for a boy.

Many families today do the same remedy for a son as for a daughter. That is fair. The pressure has fallen too heavily on girls for too long.

Be Careful with Fear-Based Selling

Some websites and astrologers sell remedies by frightening parents with lines about the spouse's health or death. You do not need to pay large amounts under pressure.

  • Ask the price first and get it in writing.
  • Prefer a temple's own counter to an agent.
  • Do not pay online to a person you have not met for a "guaranteed" puja.
  • If someone says only their puja works, walk away.

How to Mention a Remedy on the Biodata

If a remedy has been done, say so in one line. It answers the other family's question before they ask.

Write the status in the Chevvai / Manglik field (No, Yes, Partial or Don't Know in our form), and add a line like one of these to About Me:

  • "Manglik. Mangal shanti puja done at Mangalnath temple, Ujjain, in March 2026."
  • "Chevvai dosham, parigaram done at Vaitheeswaran Koil."
  • "Anshik manglik. Family will discuss with your astrologer."

Print the rasi, nakshatra and lagna too, so the other pandit can check. You can make a biodata with the horoscope worked out from the birth details. For how manglik fits into the full match, see the kundli milan guide, and more guides are in our kundli matching section.

Common questions

Can Remedies Be Done After Marriage?

Yes. Families do mangal shanti puja, Tuesday fasting and Hanuman worship after marriage too. Kumbh and ark vivah are done only before the wedding, because they are meant to come first.

What Is Kumbh Vivah?

Kumbh vivah is a symbolic marriage of a manglik girl to a clay pot in which Vishnu is invoked. A priest does it before her real wedding, and the pot is then immersed or given away.

Is a Remedy Needed If Both Are Manglik?

Most astrologers say no. When both the boy and the girl are manglik, the dosha is considered matched.

Which Temple Is Best for Mangal Dosha Puja?

Mangalnath temple in Ujjain and Vaitheeswaran Koil near Mayiladuthurai are the two named most often. Your kuladeivam temple is also a good place for the puja.

Do Remedies Change the Horoscope?

No. Mars stays where it was at birth. Remedies are done out of the family's faith, and the astrologer may then approve the match.
