To check if you are manglik, find the lagna (1st house) in your birth chart and count the houses up to Mars. If Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, you are manglik by the common rule. Astrologers repeat the same count from the moon and from Venus. An online manglik calculator does all of this from your date, time and place of birth.
You can do the manual check in five minutes with a printed kundli or jathagam. Here is how.
What You Need
Three things. The second one is where most mistakes happen.
| Input | Why it is needed | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|
| Date of birth | Mars, the moon and Venus are placed by date | Using the certificate date when the birth was after midnight but noted as the previous day |
| Time of birth | The lagna changes about every two hours | Writing "morning" or a rounded time like 6:00 am |
| Place of birth | Sunrise and the lagna depend on the town | Giving the native place instead of the hospital's town |
If the time is off by an hour, the lagna can shift by one rasi. Then the house Mars sits in shifts too, and a manglik chart can turn non-manglik or the other way round.
The Manual Method from the Lagna Chart
Step 1, Find the Lagna
In a North Indian kundli (the diamond chart), the top centre box is always the 1st house. The number written in it is the lagna's rasi number. A "5" there means Simha lagna.
In a South Indian jathagam (the square chart), the rasis are fixed in their boxes, Meenam at the top left and moving clockwise. The lagna is the box marked "La" or "Lagnam".
Step 2, Find Mars
Mars may be written as Ma, Mangal, Kuja or Sevvai, depending on the language of the chart. Note which rasi it sits in.
Step 3, Count the Houses
Count from the lagna to Mars, taking the lagna itself as 1. Go in the normal rasi order: Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna, Karka and so on.
A worked example. Lagna is Simha, and Mars is in Vrischika. Simha is 1, Kanya 2, Tula 3, Vrischika 4. Mars is in the 4th house, so this chart is manglik from the lagna.
Another one. Lagna is Mithuna, Mars is in Simha. Mithuna 1, Karka 2, Simha 3. Third house. Not manglik.
Step 4, Read the Result
| Mars in house | Result by the common rule |
|---|---|
| 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12 | Manglik |
| 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11 | Not manglik |
The Drik Panchang mangal dosha calculator lists the same six houses.
Check from the Moon and Venus Too
Drik Panchang says mangal dosha should be checked in the lagna chart, the moon chart and the Venus chart. Its view is that a person is non-manglik only when none of the three shows Mars in those houses.
The method is the same. For the moon check, treat the moon's rasi as house 1 and count to Mars. For the Venus check, treat Venus's rasi as house 1.
Many pandits give the most weight to the lagna. When Mars shows up from only the moon or Venus, families often call it anshik or partial manglik. The AstroSage mangal dosha page calls the dosha "high" when it appears in all three charts and "low" when it appears in only one. Our page on anshik manglik explains what families do with a partial result.
Why Online Calculators Disagree
Two free calculators can give a different answer for the same person. Usually one of these is the reason.
- Different house lists. Drik Panchang counts the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses. Prokerala's manglik page lists the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th from the ascendant, the South Indian way, without the 1st. AstroSage lists the 12th, 1st, 4th, 7th and 8th from the lagna and says South Indian astrologers add the 2nd.
- Different charts. Some check only the lagna. Others check the moon and Venus as well.
- Cancellation rules. Drik Panchang says there are many rules that cancel mangal dosha and applies "the most widely accepted" ones. AstroSage names Jupiter or Venus aspecting Mars, and marriage to another manglik. Each site picks its own set.
- Wrong input. A place picked from the list with the wrong state, or AM and PM swapped.
So before arguing with the result, check that both tools show the same lagna and the same rasi for Mars. If they do, the difference is in the rules, and your astrologer should decide which rule your family follows.
Checking Without the Birth Time
Without the time, the lagna cannot be found, so the main manglik check is not possible. The moon and Venus checks still work in most cases, because Venus and Mars move slowly and the moon stays in one rasi for about two and a half days.
On the day the moon changes rasi, even the moon check can go either way. In that case an astrologer may try birth time rectification, working back from known life events to estimate the time. It is a skilled job, and two astrologers may not land on the same time. Our page on kundli milan without birth time covers what else is lost and what still works.
If the time is truly unknown, write "Manglik: Don't Know" on the biodata. That is honest, and the other side's pandit can decide how much it matters.
Using a Free Manglik Calculator
Three free tools families use most:
| Tool | Houses it counts | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Drik Panchang mangal dosha calculator | 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, 12 | Checks lagna, moon and Venus and gives a rough strength |
| Prokerala manglik check | 2, 4, 7, 8, 12 from the ascendant | South Indian list, no 1st house |
| AstroSage mangal dosha report | 12, 1, 4, 7, 8 from the lagna, notes the 2nd for South India | Uses the lagna, moon and Venus charts |
Enter the same details in two of them. Same answer? You can be fairly sure. Different answers? Take both printouts to your family astrologer.
Manglik Status in Our Biodata Maker
Our maker does not do the manglik check. When you fill the date, time and place of birth, it works out the rasi, nakshatra and lagna, but it does not show where Mars falls.
It never fills the Chevvai / Manglik field on its own. You choose No, Yes, Partial or Don't Know, after doing the check above or asking your astrologer. We do it this way because the final word belongs to your family astrologer, who may apply a cancellation a calculator does not. Try it on a biodata with horoscope.
For the meaning of manglik and how families treat it, read what is manglik. If the result is yes, manglik dosha remedies lists what families commonly do.
Common questions
How Do I Know If I Am Manglik?
Count from your lagna to Mars in your birth chart. If Mars is in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, you are manglik by the common rule.
Why Do Different Apps Show Different Manglik Results?
They use different house lists, check different charts and apply different cancellation rules. A wrong birth time or place is the other usual cause.
Can I Check Manglik Without the Birth Time?
Only from the moon and Venus. The lagna check, which most pandits weigh most, needs the exact time.
Is Manglik Checked from the Lagna or the Moon?
Both, and from Venus too. Most pandits give the most weight to the lagna.
Manglik Kaise Check Kare?
Kundli mein lagna se Mangal tak ghar giniye. Agar Mangal 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 ya 12 ghar mein ho to vyakti manglik mana jata hai.
