A person is manglik when Mars (Mangal) sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of their birth chart. This placement is called mangal dosh or manglik dosha. Astrologers check it before marriage, and most families prefer a manglik boy or girl to marry someone who is also manglik.
In Hindi, "manglik kya hota hai" gets the same answer: kundli mein Mangal in chhe bhavon mein ho, to vyakti manglik mana jata hai.
Manglik in One Paragraph
Manglik dosha is a placement of Mars in the birth chart that Vedic astrology links to friction in married life. It goes by many names. North Indians say manglik or mangal dosh. Tamil families say chevvai dosham or sevvai dosham, Malayali families say chovva dosham, and Telugu and Kannada families say kuja dosha. All of them mean the same thing.
It is not part of the 36-guna score. Drik Panchang's horoscope matching page says plainly that mangal dosha is not considered in ashtakoot matching. It is checked on its own.
The House Rule, Mars in 1, 2, 4, 7, 8 or 12
A birth chart has 12 houses. Mars in six of them makes a person manglik. The Drik Panchang mangal dosha calculator lists these six and gives each a rough strength.
| Mars in house | What the house is linked to | Strength in Drik Panchang's table |
|---|---|---|
| 1st (lagna) | Self, temperament | Counted |
| 2nd | Family, speech | Counted |
| 4th | Home, comfort | Counted |
| 7th | Spouse, marriage | About 100% |
| 8th | Longevity, in-laws | About 100% |
| 12th | Expenses, bed comforts | About 50% |
Mars in the 3rd, 5th, 6th, 9th, 10th or 11th house does not make a person manglik.
Why One Astrologer Says Yes and Another Says No
Here the regional difference matters. Drik Panchang notes that North Indian astrologers usually do not count the 2nd house, and South Indian astrologers usually do not count the 1st house. Drik Panchang itself counts both.
So a boy with Mars in the 2nd house may be called manglik by a jothidar in Coimbatore and non-manglik by a pandit in Kanpur. Neither has made a mistake. Ask which rule was used.
Lagna, Moon and Venus Charts
The houses can be counted from three starting points: the lagna (ascendant), the moon, and Venus. Drik Panchang's view is that a person is non-manglik only if none of the three charts shows Mars in those houses.
Many pandits give the most weight to the lagna chart. The lagna needs the exact birth time, which is why a time of birth written as "around morning" makes the manglik check unreliable. Without the time, only the moon and Venus checks are possible.
Types of Manglik
Families use a few words for the strength of the dosha. They are used loosely, so ask your astrologer what he means by each.
| Word | What families usually mean |
|---|---|
| Manglik, full manglik | Mars in one of the six houses from the lagna, without cancellation |
| Anshik or partial manglik | Dosha seen only from the moon or Venus, or a weak placement such as the 12th house |
| High and low manglik | A rough sense of strength, often 7th and 8th as high, 1st and 12th as low |
| Non-manglik | No Mars in the six houses, or the dosha is cancelled |
Classical texts also give cancellation rules, for example certain signs for Mars or Mars joined with Jupiter. Drik Panchang says there are many such rules and that its calculator applies the most widely accepted ones. Which rules apply to a chart is for the astrologer to say.
What Manglik Dosha Is Believed to Affect
In traditional belief, a strong manglik placement can bring delays in marriage, quarrels between the couple, or health worries for the spouse. That belief is why families match a manglik with a manglik, so the dosha on both sides is said to balance out.
These are beliefs held by many families, not proven facts. We have not seen any reliable data that manglik marriages fail more often. Many families still take the check seriously, and that is their right. Fear-filled language from some astrologers is the part to be careful about.
Manglik Girl and Manglik Boy
The rule is the same for a girl and a boy. Mars in the same houses gives the same dosha.
In practice the worry falls more heavily on girls. A manglik girl's family often hears it as a problem, while a manglik boy is simply matched with a manglik girl. That is unfair, and many families now treat it the same for both.
A rough idea of numbers helps. Mars in 6 of the 12 houses counts, so close to half of all charts show the dosha from the lagna alone, before cancellations. Being manglik is very common. It is not a rare curse.
Myths and Facts
| Myth | Fact |
|---|---|
| A manglik person cannot marry a non-manglik | Many do, after cancellation or a remedy, and some families do not follow the rule at all |
| Manglik dosha ends at age 28 | Many families believe this, but it is not part of the house rule. Ask your astrologer what he follows. |
| Being manglik is bad luck for the family | No. It is one placement of one planet |
| Online tools always agree | They differ on the 1st and 2nd house, on the charts used, and on cancellation rules |
How to Write Manglik on a Biodata
Write it plainly and early. The other family will ask, and hiding it only causes trouble at the matching stage.
| Your status | What to write |
|---|---|
| Not manglik | Manglik: No |
| Manglik | Manglik: Yes |
| Partial | Manglik: Anshik (partial) |
| Not checked yet | Manglik: Don't know |
In our biodata form, the field is called Chevvai / Manglik and has these choices: No, Yes, Partial and Don't Know. Pick what your family astrologer told you. If you have done a remedy such as mangal shanti puja, you can add one line in About Me. Our page on manglik dosha remedies shows the usual wording.
Put the rasi, nakshatra and lagna on the biodata too, so the other side's pandit can check for himself. A biodata with the horoscope filled in works these out from the date, time and place of birth.

Common questions
Manglik Kya Hota Hai?
Jab janam kundli mein Mangal 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th ya 12th bhav mein ho, to vyakti manglik kehlata hai. Ise mangal dosh bhi kehte hain.
Which Houses Make a Person Manglik?
The 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses. North Indian astrologers often leave out the 2nd and South Indian astrologers often leave out the 1st.
Is Chevvai Dosham the Same as Manglik?
Yes. Chevvai dosham in Tamil, chovva dosham in Malayalam and kuja dosha in Telugu and Kannada all mean manglik dosha.
Can One Ever Get Rid of Manglik Dosha?
The placement of Mars in the birth chart does not change. Families do remedies such as mangal shanti puja or kumbh vivah, and some charts have a cancellation that the astrologer can point out.
Is Manglik Checked in the 36 Gunas?
No. Manglik is checked separately from the 36 gunas, so a good guna score does not settle it.
