Kundli Milan Without Birth Time, What Still Works

Kundli Milan Without Birth Time, What Still Works

Yes, kundli milan can be done without the birth time. All 8 kootas of the 36-guna score, and most South Indian poruthams, come from the moon's nakshatra and rasi, which usually stay the same through the birth day. What you lose is the lagna: the manglik check from the lagna, the navamsa, the dasa periods and a full chart reading all need the exact time.

The one risk is a birth on a day when the moon changed nakshatra or rasi. Then even the star depends on the hour.

What the Birth Time Changes in a Kundli

A kundli has two kinds of information. Some of it changes slowly. Some of it changes every few minutes.

Part of the kundliHow fast it changesNeeds the birth time?
Moon's rasiEvery 2 to 2.5 daysOnly on the day it changes
Moon's nakshatraAbout once a dayOnly on the day it changes
Pada (charan)About every 6 hoursOften
Lagna (ascendant)About every 2 hoursYes
House positions of all planetsWith the lagnaYes
Navamsa lagnaAbout every 13 minutesYes, to the minute
Dasa balance at birthWith the moon's exact degreeYes

So the birth date alone is enough for the moon's star and sign on most days. It is not enough for anything that depends on houses.

What Still Works Without It

Ashtakoot gun milan uses only the moon. Varna, vashya, graha maitri and bhakoot come from the rasi. Tara, yoni, gana and nadi come from the nakshatra. If both the rasi and nakshatra are certain, the 36-point score is the same with or without the time.

The same is true for star porutham in the South. Dinam, ganam, yoni, rasi, rasi adhipathi, vasyam, rajju, vedhai, mahendram and stree deergham all come from the stars and rasis. Prokerala's nakshatra porutham tool asks only for the two stars and rasis, with the pada for some stars.

So for a first check, birth time is not needed. Our nakshatra matching guide shows how to read two stars together.

The Star-Change-Day Problem

The moon moves about 13 degrees a day, and one nakshatra is 13 degrees and 20 minutes wide. So most days carry the end of one star and the start of the next.

If the change happened at 2:30 in the afternoon, a baby born at 9 am has one star and a baby born at 8 pm has the next. Without the time, nobody can say which.

What to do then:

  1. Check a panchang for the birth date. The government's Rashtriya Panchang, published by the India Meteorological Department, gives the nakshatra timings for each day, and so do Drik Panchang and printed almanacs. If the star changed at 2:30 pm and the family remembers "it was night", the later star is likely.
  2. Ask the family for anything that fixes the time: a hospital record, a school register entry, the old jathagam written by the family priest.
  3. If nothing helps, give both stars to the other side's pandit and let him match both. If both pass, the problem disappears.

The same applies to the rasi on the day the moon changes sign, about once every two and a half days.

Manglik and the Lagna Without the Time

The main manglik check counts from the lagna, which changes about every two hours. Without the time, that check cannot be done.

The moon and Venus checks still work on most days. The Drik Panchang mangal dosha page says the dosha should be seen from the lagna, the moon and Venus, so two of the three are still possible. Many pandits give the most weight to the lagna, though, so the result stays uncertain.

Be honest on the biodata. "Manglik: Don't Know" is better than a guess. Our page on checking manglik explains the moon and Venus check.

What Else You Lose

Without the time, the astrologer cannot:

  • read the 7th house, the house of marriage, or its lord
  • draw the navamsa (D9) chart, which many treat as the marriage chart
  • work out the dasa periods, so dasa sandhi and timing checks are not possible
  • do papa samyam, the Tamil check of malefic planets, which counts houses from the lagna as well as the moon and Venus

These are the checks a family does in the second round, after the star match. For many proposals, the first round is enough to decide.

Birth Time Rectification

Rectification means working backwards from life events to estimate the birth time. The astrologer looks at known dates, such as a parent's death, a sibling's birth, an accident or a job change, and tries different times until the chart fits.

It is a skilled job and it takes time. Two astrologers may arrive at different times, and both may be a few minutes off. Treat a rectified time as an estimate.

For marriage matching, rectification is worth it only if the star match is good and the families want the full chart reading. For a first check, the star is enough.

Matching by Name Instead

Some families, when even the date is uncertain, match by the first letter of the name. Each nakshatra pada has a syllable linked to it, and the name's first syllable is used to pick a star. This is the least reliable method, because most names today are not chosen from the birth star. Our page on kundli milan by name explains it and its limits.

What to Write on the Biodata If the Time Is Unknown

Write it plainly. Do not leave the line blank, and do not write a guessed time as if it were exact.

SituationWhat to write
Time not known at allTime of birth: Not known
Rough time rememberedTime of birth: About 6:30 am (not exact)
Rectified by an astrologerTime of birth: 6:42 am (rectified)

In our maker, just leave Time of Birth empty. The maker still fills the rasi and nakshatra from the date when the moon stayed in one star all that day. It leaves the lagna empty, because the lagna needs the time.

Did the moon change star or rasi that day? Then the maker cannot know which one is yours, so those rows stay empty. Pick the rasi and nakshatra from the lists yourself, as your family horoscope shows them. Make a biodata with horoscope to try it.

Common questions

Can Kundli Milan Be Done Without Birth Time?

Yes. The 36-guna score comes from the moon's star and sign, which the date gives on most days. The lagna and manglik check from the lagna need the time.

How Accurate Is Matching Without Birth Time?

The guna score is the same as with the time, if the star and rasi are certain. A full chart reading is not possible without it.

What If the Moon Changed Nakshatra on My Birth Date?

Then the star depends on the hour. Use any record that fixes the time, or ask the pandit to match both possible stars.

Can Manglik Be Checked Without Birth Time?

Only from the moon and Venus. The lagna check, which most pandits weigh most, needs the exact time.

What Is Birth Time Rectification?

It is a method where an astrologer estimates the birth time from known life events. The result is an estimate, and two astrologers may not agree.
