PAN Card Name Change After Marriage, Step by Step

PAN Card Name Change After Marriage, Step by Step

A PAN card name change after marriage is done online, through Protean (earlier NSDL) or UTIITSL, using the "Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data" application. Your PAN number does not change. Upload the marriage certificate or even the wedding invitation card as proof, and write your father's name, not your husband's. Update Aadhaar first, because the new PAN card prints the name exactly as it is on Aadhaar.

The fee is small, and the portal shows the exact amount before you pay.

Update Aadhaar Before PAN

This order matters more in 2026 than it did earlier. Protean's instructions for PAN correction now have a separate box for "Name as per Aadhaar" and say plainly that the Aadhaar name will be printed on the PAN card.

So if Aadhaar still says Divya Subramanian and you ask PAN for Divya Karthik, the two will not match. The request can be held up, and the PAN-Aadhaar link may give trouble later.

Change the Aadhaar name at an Aadhaar centre first. Our guide on Aadhaar name change after marriage has the ₹75 centre visit and the documents. Once the new e-Aadhaar is out, start the PAN request.

The Form Changed in April 2026

Forget the old Form 49A and the old change request form. UTIITSL's PAN page says the old forms (Form 49A, Form 49AA and Change Request) will not be accepted after 31 March 2026, and that everyone applies in the new forms from 1 April 2026.

On Protean's online page, new PAN cards now use Form No. 93 for Indian citizens. A name change is a different option in the same list: "Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data / Reprint of PAN Card". Pick that one. Do not apply for a new PAN, because holding two PANs is against the rules.

Documents for PAN Name Change After Marriage

Protean's instructions list these as proof of a name change for married women. Any one is enough.

  1. Marriage certificate.
  2. Marriage invitation card.
  3. Publication of the name change in the Gazette.
  4. A certificate from a gazetted officer stating the name change.
  5. A copy of the passport showing the husband's name.

The wedding card on that list surprises many people. It helps couples whose marriage is not registered yet. Still, register the marriage soon, because banks and the passport office prefer the certificate.

You will also need proof of identity and address in the new name. That is your updated Aadhaar. And you need proof of the PAN itself, which is a copy of the old PAN card or the PAN allotment letter.

The Father's Name Rule

This catches many women out. Protean's instructions say: "Married woman applicant shall give her father's name and not husband's name."

The PAN form asks for the father's name, then the mother's name, and then which parent's name you want printed on the card. Your husband's name has no place on the PAN at all. Keep your father's name exactly as it was on your old PAN. If you change its spelling by mistake, it looks like a second correction, and the request may come back asking for proof.

Step by Step, the Protean Route

  1. Open Protean's online PAN application page.
  2. Under application type, choose "Changes or Correction in existing PAN Data / Reprint of PAN Card". Applicant category: Individual.
  3. Enter your details and get the token number on your email. Save it, because it lets you resume the form.
  4. Enter your PAN. Tick only the boxes you are changing, here the name.
  5. Fill in the new name in two places: the full name (first, middle, last) and the name exactly as on Aadhaar.
  6. Fill in the father's name as before, the mother's name, and choose whose name prints on the card.
  7. Upload the proof of the name change (marriage certificate or wedding card), the updated Aadhaar and the old PAN card.
  8. Choose a physical card with e-PAN, or e-PAN only.
  9. Pay online and sign the form. Protean offers Aadhaar-based e-sign for a paperless application, and otherwise asks you to post the signed form with documents. Follow what the screen says for your case.
  10. Note the acknowledgement number and track the status on the same site.

The UTIITSL Route

UTIITSL runs the same service on its own PAN website under "Change/Correction in PAN Card". The rules on documents and the father's name are the same, because both agencies work for the Income Tax Department. Pick whichever site loads better for you. Do not apply on both.

UTIITSL's page also gives a customer care number, +91 33 40802999, for PAN queries.

Fee and Time Taken

We will not give you one fixed fee, because the official pages do not agree. UTIITSL's PAN page lists ₹107 for a physical card with e-PAN, ₹72 for e-PAN only and ₹1,017 for dispatch outside India.

Protean's fee article lists ₹50 for a change request with a card sent within India and ₹959 for a foreign address. Read the amount on the payment screen before you pay. It is the one that counts.

The e-PAN usually arrives on your email first, and the printed card comes by post later. The PAN number stays the same through all of this, so your income tax returns, bank KYC and demat account do not break.

After the PAN Is Updated

  1. Update the bank account, so the name on your PAN and bank matches for tax refunds. See our page on bank account name change after marriage.
  2. Ask your employer's HR to update the name for TDS and Form 16.
  3. Update the demat account, mutual funds and insurance policies.
  4. Then do the passport.

The full order for every document is in our page on name change after marriage.
