How to Change Your Name in Aadhaar After Marriage

To change your name in Aadhaar after marriage, visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre with your original marriage certificate. A name cannot be changed online. The fee is ₹75, and UIDAI allows a name to be updated only twice in a lifetime, so get the spelling right the first time.

The address is different. You can move your Aadhaar address to your husband's home online.

Can I Change My Surname in Aadhaar Online

No. UIDAI's enrolment and update page says the myAadhaar website handles only address and document updates. Name, gender, date of birth and mobile number changes need a visit to an Aadhaar centre.

Be careful with websites and agents who offer an "online name change" for a fee. The real process always ends at a centre, with your fingerprints or iris scan.

Documents Accepted for an Aadhaar Name Change After Marriage

The marriage certificate is the main document. UIDAI lists it among the proofs for a name change, along with a Gazette notification for a full change of name.

Carry your current Aadhaar card or its number too. The centre does not need your husband's Aadhaar for a name change.

Step by Step at the Aadhaar Centre

1. Find the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra or enrolment centre. Many banks and post offices run one. You can also book an appointment at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
2. Fill the update form at the centre. Write the new name exactly as it is on the marriage certificate. If the certificate says "Lakshmi Ramesh", do not write "Laxmi Ramesh".
3. Give the operator the original marriage certificate. It is scanned and handed back to you.
4. Give your fingerprint or iris scan to confirm it is you.
5. Pay ₹75 and take the acknowledgement slip. It has the enrolment number, date and time that you need to track the request.

The operator will read the entry back to you. Check the spelling before you say yes. With only two name changes allowed, a typing mistake costs you one of them.

Fee and Time Taken

UIDAI's charges list, revised in September 2026 puts a demographic update (name, gender, date of birth, address, mobile or email) at ₹75 when done at a centre. If you update your name and address in one visit, ask the operator what the total will be.

UIDAI says most update requests are done within 30 days. Some take up to 90 days, depending on the checks. Track yours on the "Check Enrolment and Update Status" page with the details on your slip. Once the update is through, download the new e-Aadhaar from myAadhaar.

If the request is pending beyond 30 days, you can raise a complaint by calling 1947 or through myAadhaar.

How Many Times Can I Change My Name in Aadhaar

Twice in a lifetime. Gender and date of birth can be changed only once.

If you have already used both name changes, for example once for a spelling fix and once for marriage, there is an exception route. Go to an Aadhaar centre with a Gazette notification and your documents. When the request is rejected for crossing the limit, call 1947 or email help@uidai.net.in. Quote your enrolment ID and ask for it to be handled by the UIDAI regional office.

How to Change Address in Aadhaar After Marriage

This one is easy, and it can be done online.

1. Log in to myAadhaar with your Aadhaar number and the OTP on your registered mobile.
2. Choose the address update.
3. Upload an address proof in your own name, such as a bank passbook from the new branch. If you have none, use the "Head of Family" option with your husband's Aadhaar. He gets a request and approves it.
4. Pay the fee online and note the SRN to track it.

The Head of Family route needs a document that shows your relationship to him. The marriage certificate does that.

What About the Husband's Name in Aadhaar

Aadhaar has a "C/O" (care of) field that can carry a father's, mother's, husband's or guardian's name. UIDAI says this field is not compulsory for adults and is not verified. You do not need to put your husband's name there, and you can leave your father's name if it is there already.

Common Rejection Reasons

These come straight from the rules above. Avoid them and the update usually goes through on the first try.

1. The name on the form does not match the marriage certificate letter for letter.
2. A photocopy was shown instead of the original.
3. The request was for a full change of first name, but only a marriage certificate was given. That needs a Gazette.
4. The two-name-change limit was already used.
