Marriage Registration in Gujarat, How to Get the Certificate

Marriage Registration in Gujarat, How to Get the Certificate

Marriage registration in Gujarat is compulsory under the Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act, 2006. The couple file a memorandum of marriage, signed by both of them, the priest or person who performed the marriage and two witnesses, with the Registrar of the area where the wedding took place, within 30 days.

In cities this is the municipal Registrar of marriages, and in villages it is usually done through the gram panchayat.

The marriage certificate Gujarat issues after this is the one Aadhaar, the passport office and banks accept.

A new law is coming. Gujarat's Uniform Civil Code, 2026 has received the President's assent but was not yet in force when we checked on 16 October 2026. More on it below.

Which Law Applies in Gujarat

Most couples in Gujarat register under the state's own Gujarat Registration of Marriages Act, 2006. It covers every marriage held in Gujarat, of any religion, because it only records the marriage. The marriage itself takes place under your personal law, such as the Hindu Marriage Act or Muslim personal law.

Couples who want a civil marriage, for example an inter-faith couple who do not wish to convert, use the Special Marriage Act, 1954 instead. That route has a 30-day notice and a marriage officer. If you are not sure which route fits you, ask at the marriage officer's office or speak to a local lawyer before you file.

Documents Required for Marriage Certificate in Gujarat

The memorandum form itself asks for the names, ages, addresses and religion of both, the date and place of the marriage, and the details of two witnesses. Registrars in Gujarat usually ask for these documents with it. Carry originals and self-attested copies.

  1. The filled memorandum of marriage, two copies.
  2. Age proof of both: birth certificate, school leaving certificate or passport.
  3. Identity and address proof of both: Aadhaar, voter ID or passport.
  4. The wedding invitation card, if there was one.
  5. Two or three photos of the wedding ceremony, showing the couple and the rites.
  6. Passport-size photos of the bride and groom, and in many offices a joint photo.
  7. Identity proof and photos of two witnesses who attended the wedding.
  8. A certificate or letter from the priest, kazi or person who performed the wedding, if the office asks for it.
  9. For a second marriage, a divorce decree or the late spouse's death certificate.

The exact list differs a little between a municipal corporation and a village office. Call or visit once before the day. Our documents required for marriage registration page has the general list for India.

Where to Apply in Gujarat

In a city such as Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara or Rajkot, the Registrar of marriages sits with the municipal corporation, usually at the zonal or ward office that handles births and deaths. In a municipality town, it is the nagarpalika office. In a village, ask the talati at the gram panchayat.

Apply where the wedding took place. If the wedding was in Junagadh and you live in Ahmedabad, the Junagadh registrar is the right office under the 2006 Act.

Marriage Registration Gujarat Online

Several Gujarat offices now take the application online and then call both of you, with witnesses, for verification. Others still take the memorandum on paper at the counter. We could not find a single official statewide online page for marriage registration that we could open and confirm, so we will not send you to a link that may be wrong.

Do this instead. Search your city corporation's website for "marriage registration", or ask at the ward office whether they take online forms. Avoid agents who promise a certificate without your visit. A Gujarat marriage certificate always involves the couple and the witnesses signing.

Fees and Late Registration

Section 7 of the Act says the fee is whatever the state's rules prescribe. We did not find the current fee on an official page that we could open, so we are not printing a number. Some websites quote small figures, but we could not confirm them. Ask the office, and keep the receipt.

If you are past 30 days, you can still register. The Act allows a late memorandum, but the Registrar can apply the penalty for the delay, which is up to ₹1,000 under Section 15. Couples married years ago also register this way, usually with an affidavit about the marriage.

What the Gujarat Uniform Civil Code Will Change

The Gujarat Assembly passed the Uniform Civil Code Bill on 24 March 2026. As reported by Varthabharati on 2 October 2026, the President gave assent on 17 September and the Act was published in the state Gazette on 1 October. It comes into force only from a date the state notifies, and that date had not been announced when we checked.

The Bill as introduced in the Assembly says:

  1. Marriages after the Code begins must be registered within 60 days.
  2. Wilfully not filing can bring a penalty of up to ₹10,000.
  3. Marriages already registered under the 2006 Act are treated as registered under the Code.
  4. Marriages held between 2006 and the start of the Code that were never registered must be registered within one year of the Code starting.
  5. The Code does not apply to Scheduled Tribes.

The final Act may differ from the Bill in details. Once the state notifies the start date and the rules, the office and the forms may change too. Until then, the 2006 Act and the 30-day rule apply.

In February 2026 the state also proposed changes to the 2006 Act that would inform parents before a certificate is issued. We found no confirmation that these were passed. If you are an adult couple marrying without family support, speak to a lawyer before you file.
