Name Change After Marriage in India, the Order and the Documents

No Indian law makes a woman change her surname after marriage. If she decides to change it, the marriage certificate comes first, because Aadhaar, PAN and the passport all accept it as proof of the new name. Then update Aadhaar, then PAN, then the bank, then the passport and voter ID.

Done in this order, each office sees a matching name on the document before it.

Should You Change Your Name at All

It is your choice. Some women keep the name they grew up with. Some add the husband's surname after their own, and some take it fully. All of these are legal.

Think about your degree certificates before you decide. Your marks cards and university degree will always carry your maiden name. That is fine, but you will often have to show the marriage certificate with them when you apply for a job or a visa.

If you work in a field where people know your name, a doctor with a clinic board or a lawyer with a practice, keeping the maiden name saves a lot of reprinting.

Miss, Mrs or Ms After Marriage

There is no legal rule. Forms in India use these titles for courtesy only.

Mrs is the usual choice for a married woman who takes her husband's surname. Ms can be used by any woman. It does not show whether she is married. Miss is for an unmarried woman. Pick one and use it the same way on every form.

The Order to Update Documents

Follow this order. Each step uses the step before it as proof.

  1. Marriage certificate. Register the marriage first. The certificate shows both names and the date of marriage.
  2. Aadhaar. Name changes need a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra.
  3. PAN. Change the name so it matches Aadhaar, because the two are linked.
  4. Bank accounts. Include the fixed deposits and the demat account.
  5. Passport. Apply for a reissue with the new name or the spouse's name added.
  6. Voter ID, driving licence, employer records, insurance, provident fund and property papers.

Do not hurry the passport if you have foreign travel within a few weeks. A passport in the maiden name stays valid. Travel on it, and change it after the trip.

The Aadhaar fee is from UIDAI's current charges list. The PAN fee is from Protean's FAQ for change requests. The passport fee is from the Passport Seva fee calculator, which was revised from 1 July 2026. Check each one on the day you apply.

Aadhaar

UIDAI's enrolment and update page says a name can be updated only twice in a lifetime, and only at an Aadhaar centre. The myAadhaar website handles only address and document updates. A marriage certificate is accepted for a name change.

Our guide to Aadhaar name change after marriage walks through the centre visit. It also explains how to move the address to the in-laws' house.

PAN

Use the form "Request for New PAN Card or/and Changes or Correction in PAN Data". Protean's instructions accept any one of these as proof for a married woman:

  1. The marriage certificate.
  2. The wedding invitation card.
  3. A Gazette notification.
  4. A certificate from a gazetted officer.
  5. A passport showing the husband's name.

One detail confuses many people. In the PAN form, a married woman still gives her father's name, not her husband's.

Passport

The passport is changed through a reissue. Passport Seva's reissue document advisor asks for the marriage certificate, or a joint photo declaration signed by husband and wife (Annexure J), to add the spouse's name or change the surname after marriage. For a full change of name, the standard name change process applies.

A 36-page reissue costs ₹2,500 in normal mode and ₹5,000 in tatkaal, according to the fee calculator in October 2026.

Voter ID

On the Voters' Service Portal, Form 8 is the form for correction of entries, which includes the name. If you have also moved to your husband's town, check on the same portal which option fits the change of address.

When You Need an Affidavit or a Gazette Notification

For a surname change after marriage, you usually do not need a Gazette notification. Aadhaar, PAN and the passport all accept the marriage certificate.

You need a Gazette notification in these cases:

  1. You have no marriage certificate and the office will not accept the alternatives.
  2. You are changing your first name too, or the whole name.
  3. You want to go back to your maiden name after a divorce, and an office asks for it.

The Gazette route is run by the Department of Publication. You publish an advertisement in a daily newspaper, send the application with an undertaking and two witnesses to the Controller of Publications in Delhi, and pay online through Bharatkosh. The notification then appears in Part IV of the Gazette on egazette.gov.in. Check the current fee on the Department of Publication's guidelines page before you pay.

If an office asks for proof that both names belong to you, a notary can make a short affidavit on stamp paper saying so.

Keep a Name Change Tracker

Write this table in a notebook or a phone note, and fill each row as it is done. Here is a filled sample:

Keep five or six attested photocopies of the marriage certificate in one folder. Every office asks for one.

The biodata you sent before the wedding carried the maiden name, and that is correct. It was true when it was made. If you came here while still making a biodata for a son or daughter, pick a design and keep this page for later.
