What Is the Right Age to Get Married in India?

What Is the Right Age to Get Married in India?

There is no single right age to get married, but there is a legal floor: 21 for men and 18 for women in India. Above that, the right age is when you have finished studying, earn a steady income, and feel ready to share a home. For most Indian families today that falls somewhere in the mid to late 20s.

Age alone does not make anyone ready. A 24-year-old with a stable job and a clear head can be readier than a 31-year-old who has never lived away from home.

The rest of this page explains each line.

Under section 5(iii) of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955, the bridegroom must have completed 21 years and the bride 18 years at the time of the marriage. The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 applies to all communities. It defines a "child" as a male under 21 or a female under 18, and a marriage where either side is a child is a child marriage.

The penalties are real. Under section 9 of that Act, a man over 18 who marries a child can get up to two years of rigorous imprisonment. He can also be fined up to ₹1 lakh. Section 10 sets the same punishment for anyone who performs or conducts a child marriage, which includes the priest and the relatives who arrange it.

A bill to raise the minimum age for women to 21 was introduced in Parliament in 2021. It has not become law. The Act as published on India Code, updated to 15 April 2026, still says 18 for women. If this changes, we will update this page.

What Indian Data Says About the Age of Marriage

Indians are marrying later than their parents did. UNFPA India studied the National Family Health Survey 2019-21 (NFHS-5). It found that the median age at first marriage for women aged 20 to 49 rose from 17.2 years in 2005-06 to 19.2 years in 2019-21. For men aged 25 to 29, it rose from 22.6 to 24.9 years over the same period.

The same analysis found that 23.3% of women aged 20 to 24 had married before 18. So the national median hides a big gap. In metro families with daughters in jobs, 27 or 28 is common for a girl. In some districts, girls are still married off well before the legal age.

A median is only the middle point of everyone surveyed. It tells you what is common, not what is right for your son or daughter.

Health and Fertility

Marrying too young carries real health risks for girls. The WHO says that mothers aged 10 to 19 face higher risks of eclampsia, puerperal endometritis and systemic infections, and their babies face higher risks of low birth weight and preterm birth. This is one reason the law sets a floor.

At the other end, a woman's fertility falls with age, and the fall becomes more noticeable from the mid-30s. That does not make a late marriage wrong. A couple who marry in their 30s and want children can simply see a gynaecologist early, before the first anniversary. Your doctor can tell you what applies to you. A blog cannot.

Men's fertility also changes with age, more slowly. Health in general matters more than the number: weight, blood sugar, smoking and drinking.

Career and Money Readiness

For most families the real test is not age but stability. Has the boy or girl finished studies? Is there a regular income? Can the couple pay rent in the city where they will live?

That is why the late 20s has become common. Take a boy who finishes engineering at 22. He works three or four years and clears his education loan. He is 26 or 27 before the family starts sending out the biodata.

For daughters, families now think about her career too. A girl in her first job at 23 may want two or three years to settle before marriage. Ask her. Our page on financial planning before marriage covers the money conversation in more detail.

Marrying Early or Marrying Late

Both have real advantages. Neither is a mistake by itself.

Marrying in the early to mid 20sMarrying after 30
AdvantagesMore energy for young children, grandparents are younger and can help, more time to plan a familySettled career and income, clearer idea of what you want in a partner, more savings
Things to watchLess money in the bank, careers still unsettled, less life experienceFewer proposals in some communities, fertility questions, set habits on both sides

Is marriage after 30 late? No. In cities like Bengaluru, Pune and Mumbai, many working professionals marry after 30 and do well. The search can take longer, because the pool of unmarried matches in the same age group gets smaller. Families who widen filters on location or community often find matches faster.

Many families also check the horoscope for the timing of marriage. If you want the astrology side of it, our page on when will I get married explains what astrologers look at. If a marriage seems delayed, our guide on delay in marriage looks at the everyday reasons first.

The Age Gap Between Husband and Wife

Indian law sets only minimum ages, not a maximum gap. In many arranged matches the man is a few years older, but a same-age marriage, or one where the wife is older, is just as legal. Our page on age difference in marriage goes through what families weigh.

When the time comes to start looking, put the full date of birth on the biodata. A biodata that says "Age: 27" is out of date a year later. You can make the biodata here and send it as a PDF. More guides are in our wedding planning section.
