Vivah Panchami 2026, the Ram and Sita Wedding Day That Many Families Avoid for Weddings

Vivah Panchami 2026 falls on Monday, 14 December 2026. The Panchami tithi runs from 4:47 pm on 13 December to 7:15 pm on 14 December, as per Drik Panchang for New Delhi. The day marks the wedding of Rama and Sita, but Drik Panchang lists no vivah muhurat on it, and many families in Mithila would not hold a daughter's wedding on it anyway.
So if you were hoping to book Vivah Panchami for your own wedding, the short answer is no, at least in 2026. The last marriage date before it is 12 December 2026.
Vivah Panchami 2026 Date and Tithi
Vivah Panchami is the Panchami (fifth day) of the bright half of Margashirsha, the lunar month that falls around November and December.
| Drik Panchang (New Delhi) | Prokerala (Ujjain) | |
|---|---|---|
| Vivah Panchami | Monday, 14 December 2026 | Monday, 14 December 2026 |
| Panchami tithi begins | 4:47 pm on 13 December | 4:48 pm on 13 December |
| Panchami tithi ends | 7:15 pm on 14 December | 7:16 pm on 14 December |
The one-minute gap is normal. The two sites use slightly different calculations and different default cities.
In 2027, Vivah Panchami falls on Friday, 3 December 2027.
The Story of Ram and Sita's Wedding
King Janaka of Mithila held a swayamvara for his daughter Sita. The condition was to string the great bow of Shiva. Prince after prince failed. Rama, son of King Dasharatha of Ayodhya, lifted the bow and broke it while stringing it, and Sita married him.
Drik Panchang's page on the festival says the wedding took place in Janakpuri, which is identified with Janakpur in present-day Nepal, on the Shukla Panchami of Margashirsha. The story is told in the Valmiki Ramayana and in Tulsidas's Ramcharitmanas, and on Vivah Panchami devotees read or listen to the swayamvara and wedding chapters.
Is Vivah Panchami Good for Marriage?
It depends on whom you ask, and on the year.
On the panchang, a festival does not make a day good for marriage. The day still has to pass the nakshatra, yoga and karana checks. In 2026, Drik Panchang marks 13, 14 and 15 December as "Auspicious Nakshatra not Available", and Kharmas begins on 16 December. So there is no wedding window on Vivah Panchami in 2026, whatever the family custom.
On custom, many families in Mithila and parts of Nepal avoid holding a daughter's wedding on Vivah Panchami. The reason they give is Sita's own married life: fourteen years of exile, her abduction, and the long separation that followed. Parents do not want to start a daughter's marriage on that pattern.
This is a folk custom, not a rule from scripture, and many other families see the day as a blessed one.
Why Don't People Marry on Vivah Panchami?
Two separate reasons often get mixed up.
| Reason | Who it applies to |
|---|---|
| Sita's hardships after marriage | A custom in Mithila and parts of Nepal, mainly about daughters' weddings |
| No muhurat on the panchang that year | Everyone who follows a panchang. True in 2026 on Drik Panchang |
In 2027 the picture is slightly different. Vivah Panchami falls on 3 December, and that day again has no good nakshatra on Drik Panchang. But the Panchami tithi begins at 1:43 pm on 2 December 2027, and Drik Panchang lists a marriage window on 2 December from 1:43 pm to 2:29 am on 3 December.
A family that avoids the Panchami tithi itself should mention this to the pandit before taking that date.
How Janakpur and Ayodhya Celebrate the Day
Janakpur Dham in Nepal holds the biggest celebration. Devotees gather at the Janaki Mandir, and the wedding of Rama and Sita is re-enacted with processions and tableaux. Prokerala also mentions holy baths in the ponds of Mithilanchal, such as Dhanushsagar and Gangasagar.
Ayodhya also celebrates the day in a big way. Drik Panchang describes a symbolic wedding of Sita and Rama held in the evening, with tableaux, bhajans and kirtans. In Mithila, the region around Darbhanga and Madhubani in Bihar, the day is kept as a festival.
Many devotees also fast on the day. Drik Panchang says the fast is believed to bring a blessed married life, and that it is kept especially by women.
