The temple most families visit for delay in marriage in Tamil Nadu is Thirumanancheri, near Kuthalam in Mayiladuthurai district, where unmarried people offer garlands to Shiva as Kalyanasundareswarar. Other well-known choices are the Nithya Kalyana Perumal temple at Thiruvidanthai near Chennai, Kukke Subramanya in Karnataka, Katyayani Peeth in Vrindavan, and Mangalnath in Ujjain for manglik charts.
A temple visit is a matter of faith. It brings many families hope and calm. It does not replace sending out the biodata.
How Temple Pariharam for Marriage Works
Pariharam (or parihar) is a remedy done at a temple for a problem the astrologer sees in the chart. For marriage, it usually means a special archanai or puja in the person's name and star, a garland or thread offered to the deity, and a vow to come back after the wedding.
The basic pattern is the same in most temples:
- Go with the person's name, nakshatra and rasi written down, because the priest will need them for the sankalpam.
- Buy the offering from the temple counter, not from touts outside.
- Do the puja, take the prasadam and, at some temples, a garland or thread home.
- Keep any promise you made. Many temples expect the couple to return together after the wedding.
At temples run by a state endowments department or a devasthanam board, seva fees are usually fixed and paid at the official counter or website. Ask for a receipt. Anyone asking for large sums for a "special" pariharam outside the official counter is a warning sign.
Tamil Nadu Temples
| Temple | Place | What families do |
|---|---|---|
| Thirumanancheri, Udhvaganathar (Kalyanasundareswarar) temple | Near Kuthalam, Mayiladuthurai district | Kalyana prarthanai: offer garlands to the divine couple, take one garland home; return as a couple after the wedding |
| Nithya Kalyana Perumal temple | Thiruvidanthai, on the East Coast Road south of Chennai | Prayers to the Perumal who, by tradition, marries every day; garland offering for marriage |
| Kuladeivam temple | Your family's native place | A vow at the family deity, fulfilled after the wedding |
Thirumanancheri is linked with the legend of Shiva marrying Parvati there. The name of the village itself is taken to mean the place of marriage. The temple runs the kalyana prarthanai in a separate hall and supplies the materials. Families keep the garland they take home carefully until the wedding, and many bring it back when they return as a couple.
Andhra Pradesh and Telangana Temples
| Temple | Place | What families do |
|---|---|---|
| Kalyana Venkateswara Swamy temple | Srinivasa Mangapuram, near Tirupati | Prayers and the kalyanotsavam seva, in which the deity's wedding is performed; many newly married couples also visit here first |
| Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy temple | Bhadrachalam, Telangana | Families attend or watch the Sita Rama kalyanam held on Sri Rama Navami |
Srinivasa Mangapuram is run by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams. Tradition says Lord Venkateswara and Padmavathi stayed here after their wedding.
Karnataka and Kerala Temples
| Temple | Place | What families do |
|---|---|---|
| Kukke Subramanya temple | Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka | Sarpa samskara and Ashlesha bali, done for naga (sarpa) dosha, which some astrologers link with delayed marriage |
| Guruvayur Sri Krishna temple | Thrissur district, Kerala | Many weddings are held at the temple; families pray there for a match |
Sarpa samskara at Kukke takes more than a day and the number of sevas is limited. Book through the temple's own system and check the rules before you travel.
North India Temples
| Temple | Place | What families do |
|---|---|---|
| Katyayani Peeth | Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh | Unmarried girls pray to Goddess Katyayani, the goddess of the Katyayani mantra |
| Mangalnath temple | Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh | Families with manglik charts do puja for Mars here |
| Triyuginarayan temple | Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand | Believed to be where Shiva and Parvati married; some couples now marry here |
Madhya Pradesh Tourism's page on Mangalnath says the temple is believed to mark the birthplace of the planet Mars. That is why families with manglik dosha go there.
For girls, the Katyayani mantra used in Vrindavan is the same one many families chant at home. Our guide on marriage remedies for a girl explains it.
East and North-East Temples
| Temple | Place | What families do |
|---|---|---|
| Kamakhya temple | Nilachal hill, Guwahati, Assam | One of the best-known Shakti peethas; families pray for many wishes, marriage among them |
| Family and village temples | Across Bengal, Odisha and Assam | Shiva and Durga worship, vows to the local deity |
In eastern India, marriage prayers are more often made at the family's own temple or during Durga Puja and Shivaratri than at one famous shrine.
Rituals, Offerings and the Best Days
| Deity | Common day | Usual offering |
|---|---|---|
| Shiva and Parvati | Monday | Bilva leaves, milk, a garland |
| Devi (Parvati, Katyayani, Durga) | Tuesday or Friday | Red flowers, kumkum, a red cloth or bangles |
| Vishnu, Perumal, Venkateswara | Saturday, or Thursday in some homes | Tulsi, garland, the kalyanotsavam seva where offered |
| Murugan, Subramanya | Tuesday or Shashti days | Archanai, for some families sarpa dosha remedies |
| Mars (Mangal) | Tuesday | Red lentils and red flowers, as the priest advises |
These are common customs, not fixed rules. Each temple has its own days for its special sevas.
Plan Your Visit
Timings, fees and booking rules change, sometimes every festival season, so we have not printed them here. Before you travel:
- Check the temple's official website, or call the temple office.
- For temples under a devasthanam board, such as TTD, book sevas only on the official site.
- Avoid the main festival days if the goal is a quiet puja. Go on those days if the family wants the festival.
- Carry the person's name, star and rasi, written down for the priest.
- Carry a printed biodata and the horoscope. Some families like to place them before the deity, and a priest or relative at the temple may ask for them.
You can print the biodata from a PDF. Make one here and download it as a PDF or JPG.
Can Parents Visit on Behalf of the Child?
Yes. Many parents do the puja for a son or daughter who cannot travel, giving the child's name and star for the sankalpam. Some temples prefer the person to come for the main ritual, so ask the temple office first.
Faith is one part of the effort. The other part is the search itself. Our guide on delay in marriage covers the practical side, and remedies for delay in marriage lists the other remedies families use, with cautions about scams.
