A Marathi lagna patrika (wedding card) opens with "॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥" and a line for the kuldaivat, the family deity. The body says that the wedding of "चि. सौ. कां." (the bride) with "चि." (the groom) has been fixed for a shubh muhurt, and asks you to come "सहकुटुंब सहपरिवार" and bless the couple. It ends with the nimantrak (hosts), swagatotsuk and the aaher line.
Below is the wording in Devanagari, with Roman letters for those who read Marathi better than they type it. Names, dates and halls are made up. Take your muhurt from your guruji.
How a Marathi Lagna Patrika Is Arranged
Most patrikas printed in Pune, Kolhapur or Nashik follow this order.
| Part | Marathi | Roman letters |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | ॥ | Shri Ganeshaya Namah |
| Kuldaivat line | ॥ | Shri Khandoba prasanna |
| Heading | शुभविवाह | Shubhvivah |
| Greeting | सप्रेम नमस्कार | Saprem namaskar |
| Bride | चि. सायली | Chi. Sau. Kan. Sayali |
| Groom | चि. अनिकेत | Chi. Aniket |
| Muhurt | शुभमुहूर्त | Shubh muhurt |
| Venue | विवाहस्थळ | Vivahsthal |
| Other events | हळद, सीमांतपूजन, स्वागत समारंभ | Halad, simantpujan, swagat samarambh |
| Hosts | निमंत्रक | Nimantrak |
| Family | स्वागतोत्सुक | Swagatotsuk |
| Gifts | आहेर | Aaher |
Chi. (चि., chiranjeev) is used before the groom's name. Chi. Sau. Kan. कां., chiranjeev saubhagyakankshini) is used before the bride's name. It is a blessing for a long and happy married life, and it is used only for an unmarried girl.
The Opening and the Kuldaivat Line
The first line is almost always "॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥". Some families use "॥ श्री गजानन प्रसन्न ॥" (Shri Gajanan prasanna) instead.
The second line names the family deity in the form "॥ श्री (deity) प्रसन्न ॥", meaning "may the deity be pleased". Some common ones:
| Marathi | Roman letters | Temple |
|---|---|---|
| Shri Khandoba prasanna | Jejuri |
| Shri Tuljabhavani prasanna | Tuljapur |
| Shri Mahalakshmi prasanna | Kolhapur |
| Shri Jyotiba prasanna | Wadi Ratnagiri |
Write the kuldaivat the way your elders say it in the gondhal or the puja. It is the same kuldaivat that goes in the biodata, which our Maratha biodata format explains along with the devak.
Vadhu-Var and Family Blocks
The bride's family names the vadhu (bride) first. The groom's family names the var (groom) first. Each name has the parents' names and the native place under it.
Marathi patrikas write the father's and mother's names together: "श्री. विजय व सौ. वंदना शिंदे" (Shri. Vijay va Sau. Vandana Shinde). "रा." (ra., rahnar) means "resident of", and "जि." (ji.) is the district.
How to Write the Muhurt and Lagna Time
The muhurt line has the day, the date and the exact time in words. Marathi patrikas write the minutes too, because the mangalashtak is timed to end at that minute.
| Marathi | Roman letters |
|---|---|
Ravivar, di. 31 January 2027 roji |
6 vajun 15 minitanni |
"दि." is short for dinank (date). Dupari is afternoon, sakali is morning and sayam. is evening. A goraj muhurt is an evening muhurt around sunset, popular in rural Maharashtra and for winter weddings.
Check the weekday against the date before printing. 31 January 2027 is a Sunday, and 12 December 2026 is a Saturday. Both fall on vivah muhurt dates in our January 2027 list and December 2026 list, but the exact time must come from your own guruji.
You can print the date in Marathi numerals (३१) or in English numerals (31). Pick one and use it on the whole card.

Roman letters: Saprem namaskar. Amchi kanya Chi. Sau. Kan. Sayali (Shri. Vijay va Sau. Vandana Shinde yanchi jyeshtha kanya) hicha shubhvivah Chi. Aniket (Shri. Sanjay va Sau. Sunita Jadhav, ra. Wai, ji. Satara yanche suputra) yanchyashi Ravivar, di. 31 January 2027 roji dupari 12 vajun 35 minitanni ya shubhmuhurtavar karnyache yojile aahe. Tari ya mangalprasangi aapan sahakutumb sahaparivar upasthit rahun vadhuvaransa shubhashirvad dyavet, hi namra vinanti.
In plain English: we have arranged the wedding of our eldest daughter Sayali with Aniket at this muhurt, and humbly request you to come with your whole family and bless the couple.
Some families end the second sentence with "हे कळविण्यास आनंद होत आहे" (he kalavinyas anand hot aahe, we are happy to tell you this). Both endings are in use. Ask the eldest person in the family which one your side has always printed.
Other Events
A separate block lists the events before the wedding day.
| Marathi | Roman letters | Day and date | Time |
|---|---|---|---|
Simantpujan is when the bride's family welcomes the groom's party, usually the evening before the wedding. Swagat samarambh is the reception.
Nimantrak, Swagatotsuk and the Aaher Line
The bottom of the patrika has the hosts, the family, and a line about gifts.
| Card text |
|---|
Nimantrak is the person who invites, usually the father, or both parents. If the father has passed away, write "कै." (kai., the late) before his name and put the mother or the eldest uncle as nimantrak. Swagatotsuk names those who will welcome you at the hall: brothers, uncles and cousins.
The aaher is the gift or cloth that guests bring. Families who do not want gifts print one of these:
| Marathi | Roman letters | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Krupaya aaher anu naye. | Please do not bring gifts. |
| Aapale aashirvad hach amcha aaher. | Your blessings are our gift. |
The second one sounds warmer, and elders will not feel they have been told off. Many cards also add a line from the children: "आमच्या ताईच्या लग्नाला नक्की यायचं." (Amchya taichya lagnala nakki yaycha, do come to our didi's wedding.)
Modern Sample
Couples who invite office friends often print a short Marathi card with an English side.
| Card text |
|---|
Roman letters: Amchya aai-vadilanchya aashirvadane Sayali aani Aniket lagnabandhanat adkat aahot. Nakki ya, vaat pahtoy. It means: with our parents' blessings we are getting married, please do come, we are waiting.
Buddhist Sample
Many Buddhist families in Maharashtra open the patrika with Buddha and Babasaheb Ambedkar.
| Card text |
|---|
Roman letters: Namo Buddhay. Jay Bhim. Amchi kanya Aayu. Pradnya hicha shubhvivah Aayu. Rahul yanchyashi Shanivar, di. 12 December 2026 roji sayam. 6 vajta Bauddha paddhatine sampanna honar aahe. "आयु." (aayu., short for aayushmati or aayushman) is used in place of chi. and chi. sau. kan. in many Buddhist patrikas. The time is chosen by the family and the bhante, so a Hindu muhurt list does not apply here.
Keep a Patrika for the Registration
Keep two patrikas after the wedding. In Maharashtra, a wedding done by Vedic or traditional rites is registered under the Maharashtra Regulation of Marriage Bureaus and Registration of Marriages Act, 1998, as the Inspector General of Registration explains. Our Maharashtra marriage registration guide lists the wedding invitation card among the papers the BMC asks for, along with the rest.
If someone in the family is still looking for a match, you can make a Marathi biodata here with the same family details. There is no kuldaivat line ready in the form, so add it with Add Your Own Field in Family Details. Our Hindu wedding invitation wording has the English side, and more guides are in the invitations and gifts section.

What Is Written at the Top of a Marathi Lagna Patrika?
"॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥" and below it "॥ श्री (kuldaivat) प्रसन्न ॥", for example "॥ श्री खंडोबा प्रसन्न ॥".
How Do You Write "Aaher Nako" Politely?
