Yes, in many Sindhi Hindu families the bride is given a new first name at the wedding, not just a new surname. The groom's family usually chooses it, often with a starting letter suggested by the priest from the couple's horoscopes, and the groom announces or gives it during the wedding rituals. A bride named Pooja Lalwani may become Kavita Motwani.
It is a custom, not a law. No Indian law asks a married woman to change her first name or her surname.
Why Sindhi Brides Get a New First Name
The usual explanation in families is that marriage is the start of a new life for the bride, and a new name marks it. The new name is meant to welcome her into the husband's family as one of their own.
The custom is not only Sindhi. Many Marathi families, especially Brahmin families, also give the bride a new first name, in their case during the Lakshmi puja after the wedding.
A 2025 doctoral thesis at the University of Edinburgh by Neerja M. Pathak studied this practice among Sindhi Hindu and Marathi Brahmin brides in Vadodara. Its abstract names the Sindhi ritual as Lena-Deni and says the groom ritually changes the bride's first name there.
The custom also has critics. Writers on women's issues point out that the name is chosen by the man's family and that only the woman's identity changes. Both views exist inside Sindhi families today, sometimes at the same dining table.
How the New Name Is Chosen
Practice varies by family. The common patterns:
| Who decides | How |
|---|---|
| The priest | Suggests a starting letter from the horoscopes or the wedding muhurat |
| The mother-in-law or elders | Pick a name they like that starts with that letter |
| The groom | Picks the name himself, sometimes with the bride's input |
| Both families | Agree on a name before the wedding, so nobody is surprised |
Some families choose a name that sounds close to the bride's own, so the change feels small. Pooja to Puja, Simran to Sunaina. Others choose a name that matches the groom's, or a goddess's name.
In many weddings the name is kept a surprise until the ritual. If the bride would like a say, she can ask her fiance to find out the letter beforehand and suggest two or three names she likes. Most in-laws are happy to agree.
Is It Compulsory?
No. It is a family custom, and many Sindhi families no longer insist on it, especially in cities and abroad. Some couples do the ritual for the elders and continue to use the bride's own name everywhere else.
What younger couples often do now:
- The new name is used at home and by the in-laws, and the bride's original name stays on all documents.
- The new name becomes a middle name, so both are kept: "Pooja Kavita Motwani".
- The new name is used fully, on documents too, which needs the paperwork below.
There is no wrong choice here. What matters is that the couple and both families agree before the wedding, not after.
If the New Name Goes on Documents
Changing the first name is a full name change, not a surname change after marriage. That takes more paperwork than adding a husband's surname.
The usual order is the same as for any name change after marriage, but with one extra step.
- Marriage certificate. Ask the registrar whether the form has a "name after marriage" entry, and give the new name there. Andhra Pradesh's Hindu marriage form, for example, asks for the wife's name before and after marriage.
- Gazette notification. Offices often ask for one when the first name changes. You publish a newspaper advertisement and apply to the Department of Publication, and the notice appears in the Gazette of India.
- Aadhaar. A name change needs a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra. UIDAI allows the name to be updated only twice in a lifetime, so do it once, with the final name.
- PAN. Apply for a change in PAN data with the Gazette notice or the marriage certificate as proof.
- Bank, passport, voter ID and the rest.
Our page on name change after marriage walks through each document and the Gazette steps.
Two cautions from families who have done it:
- Degrees and school certificates keep the old name forever. Keep the Gazette notice and an affidavit stating that both names belong to you, because employers and visa officers will ask.
- If the bride works, check with HR before the wedding. Changing the name in the middle of a job, a provident fund account or a visa process takes months.
The Biodata Uses Her Birth Name
A marriage biodata is made before the wedding, so it carries the name she was born with. Do not put a possible future name on it.
If a Sindhi girl's family wants to mention the custom, it fits in About Me, for example: "Our family follows Sindhi traditions." Our Sindhi marriage biodata page shows the lines Sindhi families add: the nukh (the family's clan name), the sub-group such as Amil or Bhaiband, and the family's old town in Sindh.
Sindhi Wedding Rituals Around the Name
The name is one part of a longer wedding. The engagement (kachchi misri and pakki misri), saanth, the hathialo where the hands are tied, the pheras and the datar salt ritual at the groom's home all come before or after it. Our page on Sindhi wedding rituals in order lists them step by step.
Common questions
Why Do Sindhi Girls Change Their Name After Marriage?
Many Sindhi families believe marriage begins a new life for the bride, and a new first name marks her entry into the husband's family. It is a family custom, not a legal requirement.
Do All Sindhis Change the Bride's Name After Marriage?
No. Many families still do it, but many others have stopped, or use the new name only at home while documents keep her original name.
Who Chooses the New Name for a Sindhi Bride?
Usually the groom's family, often with a starting letter suggested by the priest from the horoscopes. Some grooms choose it with the bride.
Does the New Name Have to Be Changed on Aadhaar and PAN?
No. That is the couple's choice. If they do change it, a first-name change usually needs a Gazette notification, and Aadhaar allows only two name updates in a lifetime.
Can a Sindhi Bride Keep Her Own Name?
Yes. Nothing in law stops her. Many brides keep their own name on documents and use the new name socially.
