At a South Indian wedding, women guests usually wear a silk saree, often a Kanchipuram, Mysore silk or Kerala kasavu, with jasmine in the hair. Men wear a veshti (dhoti) with a shirt or kurta, or simply a shirt and trousers. The main ceremony is often early in the morning, so dress for a 6 am start, a temple-style hall and sitting close to the mandap.
The evening reception is different. Lehengas, gowns, suits and sherwanis are all common there. If you know only one thing, know which of the two you are going to.
This page is about Hindu weddings in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Kerala. Our general guide on what to wear to a Hindu wedding is more North India led.
Why Timing Changes Everything
In much of the South, the muhurtham (the auspicious time for tying the thali) falls early in the morning. A Chennai invitation may say 6:00 to 7:30 am. Kerala weddings at Guruvayur are short, and several couples marry one after another. Telugu weddings sometimes have a late-night muhurtham instead.
Check the time on the card. Then plan backwards. Silk takes time to drape. Jasmine has to be fresh.
A morning wedding also means you will be in the same outfit for breakfast, the ceremony and the lunch. Pick something you can sit in for four hours.
What Women Wear, State by State
| State | What women guests often wear |
|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu | Kanchipuram silk, or a lighter soft silk or Chettinad cotton in summer |
| Andhra Pradesh and Telangana | Silk sarees such as Uppada, Gadwal, Dharmavaram or Pochampally |
| Karnataka | Mysore silk, Ilkal, or any festive silk saree |
| Kerala | The off-white kasavu saree or the two-piece set-mundu with a gold border |
A guest is not expected to match the state. A Banarasi saree at a Tamil wedding is perfectly fine. What stands out is a short dress or a very casual outfit at the morning ceremony.
Salwar suits and anarkalis are also common, especially for younger guests and those travelling from the North. Choose silk or a festive fabric over everyday cotton.
Temple jewellery, a gold chain, bangles and small jhumkas go with all of these. Most women wear flowers in their hair. Families often keep jasmine strings for guests at the entrance.
What Men Wear
The traditional choice is a white or cream dhoti with a silk or cotton shirt.
| State | Name of the dhoti | Common pairing |
|---|---|---|
| Tamil Nadu | Veshti, often with a zari border | Silk shirt, sometimes an angavastram (a cloth over the shoulder) |
| Andhra Pradesh and Telangana | Pancha | Silk kurta or shirt |
| Karnataka | Panche | Shirt or kurta, sometimes a shawl |
| Kerala | Mundu, with a kasavu border | Shirt or kurta |
If you have never worn one, a veshti with a velcro waistband is sold in most shops in Chennai and Bengaluru, and it stays up through the day. A kurta with churidar, or a shirt and trousers, is also fine for a guest. Men in the bride's or groom's family usually wear the dhoti.
Leave the suit and tie for the reception.
Colours to Wear and to Skip
| Colour | For a South Indian wedding guest |
|---|---|
| Bright colours, gold zari | Very welcome |
| Off-white or cream with a gold border | Normal and festive, especially in Kerala |
| Black | Many traditional families avoid it at the morning ceremony. Fine at a city reception |
| Deep red or maroon silk | Fine in general, but avoid a heavy bridal-looking saree in the bride's colour |
| All white with no border | Some families link plain white with mourning. Add a coloured border or blouse |
White is not avoided in the South the way it is in some North Indian homes, and a guest from Delhi who has been told "never wear white to a wedding" can relax here, because a Kerala bride herself often wears a cream kasavu saree.
If the bride's family is from a community with a set bridal colour, they may tell you. When in doubt, ask the person who invited you.
Temple and Mandap Etiquette
Many South Indian weddings are held in a temple or a kalyana mandapam (wedding hall). A few things help.
- Shoes come off near the mandap and inside temples. Wear footwear that slips off easily.
- Shoulders and knees should be covered. Some temples, including Guruvayur, have dress rules at the entrance.
- You may sit on the floor or on low chairs near the mandap, so avoid a very tight outfit.
- Carry a light shawl. Halls with air conditioning get cold at 6 am.
The Banana-Leaf Lunch
After the muhurtham, guests usually eat a full meal served on a banana leaf. In Tamil Nadu it is called virundhu, in Kerala sadhya, and in Karnataka oota.
Eat with your right hand. Roll up your sleeves. A saree pallu can be tucked in at the waist so it does not drop into the sambar.
When you finish, many families in Kerala and Tamil Nadu fold the leaf towards you to show you enjoyed the meal. Folding it away from you is linked with funerals in some homes. If you are unsure, watch what the elders at your table do.
What to Wear to the Reception
The reception is usually in the evening, sometimes the day before the muhurtham in Tamil and Telugu weddings. Here, almost anything festive works.
- Women wear lehengas, designer sarees, gowns and Indo-western outfits.
- Men wear suits, bandhgalas, sherwanis or a kurta with a jacket.
- Black and darker colours are common at receptions in Chennai, Hyderabad and Bengaluru.
The reception is also where you hand over your gift or envelope, and stand in the line for a photo with the couple.
Mehendi and Sangeet
Many South Indian families now add a mehendi or sangeet. Wear what you would to a North Indian one: a light lehenga, a festive suit, or a kurta for men. Yellow and green are popular. Our page on South Indian wedding rituals explains which functions are traditional and which are newer.
What Not to Wear
- Shorts, short dresses or sleeveless tops at the morning ceremony.
- Jeans at the muhurtham. They are fine only at an informal mehendi.
- Very heavy jewellery or a costly saree you will worry about at a crowded lunch.
- Strong perfume. The hall is full of jasmine and incense already.
If you are part of the wedding family, the bride's shopping list gives an idea of what the family buys for each function.
