Chaturmas in 2026 runs from Devshayani Ekadashi on Saturday, 25 July to Dev Uthani (Prabodhini) Ekadashi on Friday, 20 November, as per Drik Panchang for New Delhi. During these four months most Hindu families in North and Central India do not hold weddings, griha pravesh or other big ceremonies. Preparing for marriage is a different matter. Making the biodata, matching kundlis and meeting families can all go on.
The first marriage muhurat after Chaturmas in 2026 is Saturday, 21 November, on Drik Panchang's calendar.
Chaturmas 2026 Dates
| Event | Date in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Devshayani Ekadashi, Chaturmas begins | Saturday, 25 July |
| Diwali (Lakshmi Puja) | Sunday, 8 November |
| Dev Uthani Ekadashi, Chaturmas ends | Friday, 20 November |
| First vivah muhurat on Drik Panchang | Saturday, 21 November |
The Ekadashi dates are from Drik Panchang's 2026 Ekadashi list for New Delhi. Drik also lists a Vaishnava observance of Dev Uthani Ekadashi on Saturday, 21 November. Families following ISKCON or another Vaishnava calendar may mark that day.
Why Weddings Pause in Chaturmas
Chaturmas means "four months". Tradition says Lord Vishnu goes into yogic sleep on Devshayani Ekadashi and wakes on Dev Uthani Ekadashi. Since Vishnu is invoked as a witness to a Hindu wedding, families wait for him to wake.
Drik Panchang's guide on choosing a marriage date says plainly that marriage rituals are not held during Chaturmas. It adds that Pitru Paksha, which falls inside Chaturmas, is also avoided for auspicious work. You can read that on its page on choosing an auspicious marriage date.
There is also a plain, practical history. Chaturmas covers the monsoon, when travel was hard and fields needed hands. Big gatherings were simply easier after the rains.
Don'ts, Ceremonies and Sanskaras
Families who follow Chaturmas usually avoid these:
| Avoided | Notes |
|---|---|
| Vivah (wedding) | The main one; Drik Panchang and Prokerala both show no marriage dates in August, September or October 2026 |
| Griha pravesh | Moving into a new house |
| Mundan | First head-shaving of a child |
| Upanayanam or janeu | Sacred thread ceremony |
| Buying land or starting construction | Many families wait |
| Big new beginnings | Some avoid starting a business or buying a vehicle |
Customs differ by region. Many South Indian families follow their own calendars and avoid Aadi or Aashada month, which overlaps only part of Chaturmas. Ask your family priest which rules your household follows.
What Is Still Allowed
This is where most families have questions. In general, preparation is fine, the ceremony waits.
| Question | Usual answer |
|---|---|
| Can we make and send the biodata? | Yes. Nothing restricts it, and it is a good time to do it |
| Can we match kundlis? | Yes. Astrologers match horoscopes all year |
| Can families meet, or the boy and girl meet? | Yes |
| Can we do roka or engagement? | Families differ. Some do a simple roka or sagai; many wait for a muhurat after Dev Uthani. Ask your priest |
| Can we fix the wedding date? | Yes. Book the muhurat now for after 20 November |
| Can we register the marriage or do a court marriage? | Yes. The law has no seasonal restriction; registrar offices work on working days |
| Can we buy wedding clothes and jewellery? | Most families do, especially around Dhanteras and Diwali |
So Chaturmas is the right time to get the biodata ready, shortlist matches and meet families. By the time Dev Uthani comes, the families who planned ahead can book the first dates. You can make the biodata here and send it as a PDF or JPG.

Food and Lifestyle Rules
Many households follow simple food rules in Chaturmas. A common pattern is one food given up in each month:
| Month | Commonly given up |
|---|---|
| Shravan | Leafy vegetables |
| Bhadrapada | Curd |
| Ashwin | Milk |
| Kartik | Urad dal, and in some homes onion and garlic |
Other common practices: eating only vegetarian food, avoiding onion, garlic and alcohol, eating one meal a day on certain days, sleeping on the floor, and extra prayer or reading of scripture. Not every family does all of these. Many do none. Older relatives usually know what the family follows.
People with diabetes, pregnant women, children and the elderly should not give up whole food groups without a doctor's advice.
Jain Chaturmas
Jains also observe Chaturmas during the rains, and for them it is a central religious period. Jain monks and nuns stop travelling and stay in one place for the four months, and lay families visit them for teaching.
Jain families often eat more strictly in this time, avoiding root vegetables and leafy greens and eating before sunset. Paryushan, the most important Jain festival, falls within it. Jain Chaturmas dates follow the Jain calendar and can differ from the Hindu dates by a few days, so ask your sangh.
Plan Ahead for the First Muhurat After Dev Uthani
The season after Chaturmas is short. On Drik Panchang's calendar for New Delhi, November 2026 has only four marriage days: 21, 24, 25 and 26 November. December has a few more before Kharmas begins in mid-December.
Prokerala's 2026 list differs a little and even shows 20 November itself, so ask your family priest which calendar to follow. Halls, caterers and priests for those dates book fast. If your family has a match fixed, book now. Our posts on vivah muhurat in November 2026 and marriage muhurat 2026 after Diwali list the dates with times.
