The most common marriage biodata mistakes are a wrong time of birth, an old or unclear photo, missing family details, copied About Me lines, and private details like Aadhaar or the full address. Most of them take a minute to fix. Below are 25 mistakes in five groups, each with a before and after, and a quick self-check at the end.
Content Mistakes
| # | Mistake | Before | After |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Time of birth without am or pm | Time of Birth: 6:30 | Time of Birth: 6:30 am |
| 2 | Date in numbers only | DOB: 04/05/97 | Date of Birth: 4 May 1997 |
| 3 | Vague job | Job: Private company | Job: Accountant, a finance company, Chennai |
| 4 | Degree without detail | Education: Graduate | Education: B.Com, Madras University |
| 5 | Siblings without marital status | Sisters: 2 | Sisters: 2 (1 married) |
| 6 | Native place missing | (blank) | Native Place: Karaikudi |
| 7 | Monthly and yearly income mixed | Income: 50k / 6 LPA | Annual Income: 6 lakh |
| 8 | Marital status hidden in a second marriage | (left blank) | Marital Status: Divorced |
The first one causes the most trouble. A night birth at 2:10 am written as 2:10 pm changes the lagna completely, and the other family's astrologer will match the wrong chart. Copy the time from the horoscope written at birth or the hospital record, not from memory.
The last one matters most for trust. If the other family hears about a previous marriage from someone else, trust is very hard to rebuild. Our guide on biodata for second marriage has wording that is honest and calm.
Photo Mistakes
| # | Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | Photo three years old | Use one from the last six months to a year |
| 10 | Cropped from a group photo, with a stray shoulder | Take a fresh, solo, face-and-shoulders photo |
| 11 | Heavy filters or beauty mode | Natural light, no filters, small corrections only |
| 12 | Dark photo under a tube light at night | Stand facing a window in the morning |
| 13 | Blurry screenshot of a WhatsApp photo | Upload the original from the phone gallery |
Our photo tips cover clothes, background and phone settings.
Design and Format Mistakes
| # | Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 14 | Three or four pages | One page, two at most |
| 15 | Four fonts and five colours | One font, one or two colours |
| 16 | Sent as a Word file | Send a PDF, which looks the same on every phone |
| 17 | Photo of a printout, taken at an angle | Send the PDF or a proper JPG |
| 18 | File named "Document (3).pdf" | Name-Biodata.pdf |
A heavily decorated design is not a mistake by itself. Some families love a temple border. It becomes a problem when the decoration makes the details hard to read on a phone. The marriage biodata format page shows the usual order of sections, which elders find easiest to read.
Tone and Language Mistakes
| # | Mistake | Before | After |
|---|---|---|---|
| 19 | Resume language | Seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation | I work as a chemist and hope to grow in the same company |
| 20 | Copied About Me | Down-to-earth person with good family values | I live with my parents in Erode and help at my father's shop on weekends |
| 21 | Demanding expectations | Girl must be fair, slim, homely | Looking for an educated, cheerful girl |
| 22 | Spelling mistakes in names | Fathers name: Rajesh Sharam | Father's Name: Rajesh Sharma |
Mistake 21 deserves a word more. Lines about skin colour or a "homely" girl read badly to many families now, and any hint about gifts or a "grand wedding" can read as a dowry demand. Demanding dowry is an offence under section 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. Our partner expectations guide has better wording.
Privacy Mistakes
| # | Mistake | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 23 | Aadhaar, PAN or bank details in the biodata | Never include them |
| 24 | Full house address with door number | City only, until talks move ahead |
| 25 | Biodata with photo posted in large public groups | Short text in groups, PDF only to families who reply |
A biodata can pass through 20 or 30 phones in a week. If someone misuses your photo or details on a fake profile, report it on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
If a website or app holds your biodata, use its own delete option, or write to the email given in its privacy policy. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 will give you a legal right to ask for erasure. That part starts only around May 2027, after the 18-month phased start the Press Information Bureau announced in November 2025.
A Full Before and After
Here is one made-up biodata, before and after fixing. For two complete ones, see our marriage biodata sample page.
| Line | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Name | Bunty | Abhishek Verma |
| Date of Birth | 12/8/96 | 12 August 1996 |
| Time of Birth | 11:45 | 11:45 pm |
| Education | Engineering | B.Tech (ECE), AKTU |
| Job | MNC | Software engineer, Noida |
| Family | Good family | Father: Retired, UP Jal Nigam. Mother: Teacher |
| Siblings | 1 sis | 1 elder sister (married, Lucknow) |
| About Me | Simple boy with good values, God-fearing and caring | I work in Noida and visit my parents in Kanpur most weekends. I like cricket and cooking on Sundays. |
| Expectations | Fair, slim, homely girl | Educated girl, working or not, as she prefers |
| Contact | Full address with house number | Father's mobile, Kanpur |
The "after" version is not longer. It just answers the questions the other family would otherwise ask on the phone.
If You Already Sent a Biodata with a Mistake
It happens to most families at least once. A wrong star, a phone number with two digits swapped, or last year's job.
Fix the biodata first and download a fresh copy. Then send it to every family and broker who got the old one, with a short note: "Sorry, small correction in the time of birth. Please use this copy." Delete the old file from your own phone so you do not send it again by mistake.
If the mistake was in the birth details and a family has already matched horoscopes, tell them directly. Their astrologer matched the wrong chart, and they will want to check again. It is a little embarrassing. It is far worse if it comes out after the engagement.
Ten-Point Self-Check
Tick each one before you send:
- Time of birth has am or pm, from a written record
- Dates are in words
- Job has designation, company type and city
- Brothers and sisters show married or not
- Native place is filled
- Photo is less than a year old and clear
- One or two pages only
- About Me is in your own words
- No Aadhaar, PAN or full address
- File is a PDF named after the person
If all ten are done, the biodata is ready. You can make a fresh one here if your current one needs too many fixes.
Common questions
What Should I Absolutely Not Include in a Marriage Biodata?
Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, the full house address, past relationships and anything about gifts or dowry.
Is a Heavily Designed Biodata a Mistake?
Only if it makes the details hard to read. A decorative border is fine. Small text on a busy background is not.
Should a Biodata Be Short or Detailed?
Short enough for one page, detailed enough to answer the basic questions. Cut optional lines before cutting the family details.
Is a Photo Mandatory?
No. But most families expect one. If you leave it out, say you will share it on request.
What Do Families Notice as Red Flags?
Missing marital status in a second marriage, a very old photo, vague job lines like "MNC", and copied About Me paragraphs.
