The best photo for a marriage biodata is a recent, clear photo of the face and shoulders, taken in daylight against a plain wall, with a natural smile and simple traditional or neat formal clothes. It should be less than a year old and look like the person on a normal good day. Families want to recognise the boy or girl when they meet, so skip heavy filters.
The tips below are in the order you will need them.
Should You Put a Photo in the Biodata?
Most families do. The other family wants to see the person before asking their astrologer to match horoscopes.
Some families prefer to send the biodata without a photo first and share the photo only with families they are serious about. That is a fair choice, especially for a girl's biodata that will go to large WhatsApp groups. Our designs all have a photo box, but you can leave it empty.
Which Kind of Photo Works Best
Use a close-up for the biodata itself. Face and shoulders, looking at the camera. It fills the passport-size box properly.
Keep a second, full-length photo ready. Many families ask for one after the first call. Send it separately, not inside the biodata.
Choose a natural smile. A serious face looks stern on a small phone screen, and a very wide laugh looks out of place in a formal document.
Do not use a group photo with others cropped out. A shoulder or a stray hand at the edge gives it away, and the quality drops when you zoom in.
Use a photo from the last six months to a year. If he has grown a beard or she has cut her hair short since, take a new one.
What to Wear
Simple traditional clothes work for most families. A saree, salwar kameez or kurta for girls. A shirt, kurta or a light blazer for boys.
Pick solid colours or small prints. Big patterns and shiny fabric distract from the face in a small photo.
| For | Usually works | Usually avoided |
|---|---|---|
| Girl, Tamil or Kerala family | Silk or cotton saree, small jewellery, flowers in the hair | Heavy bridal jewellery |
| Girl, North Indian family | Salwar suit or saree, small earrings | Very short or sleeveless outfits, for traditional families |
| Girl, working in a metro | Kurti or a formal shirt | Party wear |
| Boy, any region | Plain shirt or kurta, neat hair | T-shirts with prints, sunglasses, caps |
| Boy, Sikh family | Turban if he wears one, neat beard | |
| Muslim families | Modest dress, hijab if she wears one |
Wear what the person usually wears for a family function. A girl who never wears a saree should not look like a different person in the photo.
Background and Lighting
Stand in front of a plain, light-coloured wall. A cupboard, a calendar or a crowded room behind you pulls the eye away.
Use daylight from a window, facing the light. Morning or late afternoon light is softest. Avoid tube lights at night, which make skin look grey and add shadows under the eyes.
No sunglasses, caps or anything covering the face.
A simple test: take the photo, then look at it the size of a postage stamp on your phone. If you can still see the face clearly, the background and light are fine.
Taking the Photo on a Phone
Ask someone else to take it, from about one and a half to two metres away, with the phone at eye level. A selfie at arm's length makes the face look wider than it is.
Use the normal photo mode or portrait mode, without beauty mode. Tap on the face to focus before you press the button.
Take ten or fifteen shots and choose the best two.
A photo studio is not necessary. If you want one, a passport-photo shop near you can take a clean portrait in a few minutes.
How Much Editing Is Fine
It is fine to crop, straighten, and adjust brightness or contrast a little. It is not fine to change the face shape, lighten the skin, remove a scar or make someone look slimmer.
The reason is practical. The families will meet. If the person looks noticeably different from the photo, the first meeting starts with doubt, and that is hard to recover from.
If you are thinking of using an AI app to clean up the background, read our page on AI photo prompts for a biodata first. It covers what to ask for and what to avoid.
Photo Size for Print and WhatsApp
Upload a sharp, original photo, not a screenshot of a WhatsApp image. WhatsApp shrinks photos, and a shrunk photo looks blurry when printed.
The photo box in our designs has the 7:9 shape of a passport photo and prints at about 4.4 by 5.6 cm on the A4 page. After you upload, you can zoom, move and turn the photo to fit the face neatly in the frame. Every design uses the same frame, so you do not need to crop again if you change the design later.
Most phone photos from the last few years are more than sharp enough for an A4 print.
How Many Photos, and in What Order
One photo goes in the biodata. Keep one or two more ready on your phone: a full-length photo and one from a family function. Send them only when a family asks.
Do not attach five photos with the first message. It looks like too much, and it puts your photos into more phones than needed.
Keep the Photo Safe
A biodata photo can travel far on WhatsApp. Do not post the biodata with a photo in large public groups. For the first round, send it to families and brokers you know.
If you find the photo misused, for example on a fake matrimony profile, report it on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
If a website holds your photo, use its own delete option. The Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 will give you the right to ask for it to be erased, but that part starts only around May 2027, as the Press Information Bureau explains. On Hello Biodata, "Delete my saved biodata" removes every biodata and photo saved on your number.
When the photo is ready, pick a design and add it. The photo box sits at the top in every design. To see where it sits on a finished page, look at our marriage biodata sample.
