Tamil Biodata Header Lines and What They Mean

Tamil Biodata Header Lines and What They Mean

The top of a Tamil marriage biodata has three things. First a symbol such as the Pillaiyar Suzhi or Om, then a blessing line such as "Pillaiyar Thunai", "Sivamayam" or "Murugan Thunai", and last a title, usually "Thirumana Biodata". All three are optional. Families pick them by what is written at the top of letters and invitations in their own house.

What the Little Curl at the Top Means

The Pillaiyar Suzhi is the small curled mark that many Tamil people write at the very top of a page before anything auspicious: a letter, an account book, a wedding invitation, a horoscope. It is written like the Tamil letter உ and is taken as a sign of Pillaiyar (Ganesha), so that the work starts without obstacles.

On a biodata it sits in the top centre, above everything else. Our maker has it as a symbol called Pillaiyar Suzhi, next to Ganesha, Om and Swastik.

The Six Tamil Blessing Lines and Their Meaning

When the biodata language is Tamil and the religion is Hindu, the Blessing Line list offers these six lines. In the list they appear in Tamil script, for example பிள்ளையார் துணை. Here they are in English letters with the meaning.

Line (in English letters)MeaningFamilies who often pick it
UThe Pillaiyar Suzhi itself, written as a lineFamilies who want only the mark
Sivamayam"All is Shiva"Many Saivite families
Pillaiyar Thunai"With Pillaiyar as our support"The most common choice in most districts
Murugan Thunai"With Murugan as our support"Families devoted to Murugan
Om MurugaA short prayer to MuruganMurugan devotees, often younger families
Sri Venkatesa Perumal Thunai"With Venkatesa Perumal as our support"Many Vaishnava families, and families who go to Tirupati

None of this is a rule. Plenty of Saivite families write "Pillaiyar Thunai", and plenty of families who pray to Perumal write "Sivamayam" because the grandfather always did. Ask the eldest person at home what goes on top of the family's letters. That is your line.

If you pick the Pillaiyar Suzhi symbol, "Pillaiyar Thunai" comes up as the first choice on its own. You can change it from the list.

Writing Your Own Line for the Kuladeivam

Many families want the name of their kuladeivam (family deity) on top. Tap "Write My Own" at the end of the list and type it. Some lines families use:

  • Sri Ranganathar Thunai
  • Meenakshi Amman Thunai
  • Sri Ayyanar Thunai
  • Om Sakthi
  • Karuppasamy Thunai

To print it in Tamil, type it with a Tamil keyboard on your phone. Whatever you type prints exactly as typed. Write My Own works for the title too.

You cannot upload a picture of your kuladeivam or of Murugan's vel. The symbols are a fixed list of 11. A Murugan family can pick Om as the symbol and "Murugan Thunai" as the line. That pair looks right to most elders.

The Title

The title sits under the blessing line. On a Tamil biodata the maker offers four:

Title (in English letters)Meaning
Thirumana BiodataMarriage biodata, the usual choice
SuyavivaramPersonal details
Thirumana SuyavivaramMarriage personal details
BiodataBiodata, plain and short

"Thirumana Biodata" is what most families send. "Suyavivaram" reads a little formal and suits a family that prefers pure Tamil words.

Lines for Muslim and Christian Families

For Muslim families, a Tamil biodata offers "Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem" in Tamil letters, the same in Arabic script, and 786. The 786 symbol is in the symbol list too.

Christian families get the Cross symbol and one built-in verse in English, "God is love" (1 John 4:8). For a Tamil verse, use Write My Own and copy it word for word from the Bible your family reads. Our Christian biodata in Tamil page covers the church and denomination rows as well.

How Much to Put on Top

One of each is enough. When families stack two deity names and a second line, the top gets crowded. The name and the photo move down the page, and the biodata is more likely to spill onto a second page.

Each of the three has its own show switch. Turn all three off and the biodata starts straight from the name. That is common for an English biodata sent to a family outside Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Lines on an English Biodata

An English biodata starts with the Blessing Line switched off. Switch it on and the list shows lines of every language under language headings, Tamil among them. A Tamil line prints in Tamil script even on an English biodata, and that is how many Chennai families send it. If you choose the Pillaiyar Suzhi symbol, the Tamil lines come first in the list.

To try the lines on a real page, make a Tamil biodata here, or pick any design from our biodata templates and switch the language to Tamil. The preview changes as you tap each line.

Common questions

Can I Make a Tamil Biodata with No God Symbol?

Yes. The symbol, the blessing line and the title each have their own switch. Turn them off and the biodata starts with the name.

Is the Pillaiyar Suzhi the Same as the Ganesha Symbol?

Both stand for Pillaiyar. The Suzhi is the curl Tamil families write by hand, and Ganesha is a picture. Try both in the preview and keep the one the elders like.

Which Line Is Best, Pillaiyar Thunai or Sivamayam?

Whichever your family writes on its letters and invitations. If there is no family habit, Pillaiyar Thunai is the safe choice.

Can I Add My Kuladeivam's Photo at the Top?

No. The symbols are a fixed list. Type the kuladeivam's name as your own blessing line instead.

Will a Tamil Line Print Correctly on an English Biodata?

Yes. It prints in Tamil script, and the rest of the page stays in English.
