The top of a Malayalam marriage biodata usually has three things: a symbol (Om, Ganesha, the cross or 786), one blessing line such as "Om Hari Sree Ganapathaye Namah", and the title "Vivaha Biodata". None of the three is compulsory. Plenty of Kerala families keep only the title and start straight with the name.
Which line to use depends on the family's faith and habit. There is no right or wrong one.
Lines Hindu Families in Kerala Use
Our maker has five Hindu lines ready on a Malayalam biodata. They print in Malayalam script. Here they are in English letters, with what each one means:
| Blessing line | Meaning | Who usually picks it |
|---|---|---|
| Om | The sacred syllable | Any Hindu family, short and plain |
| Hari Sree Ganapathaye Namah | Salutation to Lord Ganapathi | Families who begin anything new with Ganapathi |
| Om Hari Sree Ganapathaye Namah | The same line with Om in front | The longer, more formal form |
| Sree Ganeshaya Namah | Salutation to Lord Ganesha | Ganesha devotees |
| Om Namah Shivaya | Salutation to Lord Shiva | Shiva devotees |
"Hari Sree Ganapathaye Namah" is the line Kerala children first write at Vidyarambham, when they are initiated into letters on Vijayadashami. Most Malayali parents know it by heart, which is one reason it sits so naturally on a biodata.
On the page, the longer form looks like this: ഓം ഹരിഃ ശ്രീ ഗണപതയേ നമഃ.
A Family Deity or Temple Line
Many Kerala families want the name of their own deity or temple instead, for example "Sree Guruvayurappan Thuna" (may Guruvayurappan help us). That line is not in the ready list, so choose Write My Own under the blessing line and type it.
Type it in Malayalam script if the biodata is in Malayalam. A line in English letters on a Malayalam page looks out of place. If you cannot type Malayalam on your phone, add the Malayalam keyboard in Gboard, or ask someone at home who can.
Keep it to one line. Two or three slokas stacked at the top push the name and photo down and can make the biodata spill onto a second page.
Muslim Families
On a Malayalam biodata, the list for Muslim families has these lines:
- Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem, in Malayalam script
- the Bismillah in Arabic, in two styles, and the single Bismillah sign
- "And We created you in pairs", Qur'an 78:8, in Arabic
- 786
Pick 786 as the symbol if you want it. Some families keep only the Bismillah and no symbol. Our Muslim marriage biodata in Malayalam page covers the mahallu and family lines that come next.
Christian Families
The symbol is the Cross. The ready verse is "God is love" from 1 John 4:8, in English. For a Malayalam verse, use Write My Own and copy it word for word from the Bible your family reads, because translations differ in wording.
Many Kerala Christian biodatas carry only the cross and the title, with no verse. Our Christian marriage biodata in Malayalam page has the parish and sabha rows.
The Title
Two titles are ready on a Malayalam biodata: "Vivaha Biodata" (marriage biodata) and plain "Biodata". Vivaha Biodata is the one you will see most in Kerala.
If your family says "Kalyana Biodata", or you want the title in English as "Marriage Biodata", type it with Write My Own. The rest of the biodata stays in Malayalam.
Do not put the person's name in the title. The name is the first row below it.
The Symbol List
The same 11 symbols are offered in every language: Ganesha, Om, Pillaiyar Suzhi, Swastik, Khanda, Ik Onkar, 786, Cross, Jain Swastik, Ahimsa Hand and Dhamma Chakra. You cannot upload your own picture, so a photo of Guruvayurappan or a family deity cannot go on the biodata. Use a line with the deity's name instead.
When you pick a symbol, the blessing line follows it. Choose Ganesha and a Ganapathi line comes first. Choose Om and an Om line comes first. You can still pick any other line from the list.
Symbol, blessing line and title each have their own switch. Turn off whatever you do not want.
Small Things That Look Right
Match the symbol and the line where you can. An Om line under the Om symbol, or a Ganapathi line under Ganesha, looks settled. Mixing is not wrong, only less tidy.
Use one script for the top. On a Malayalam biodata, a Malayalam line. On an English biodata, families of every language often still pick a line in their own script, and that is fine. Our maker shows the lines of every language under language headings, so a Malayalam line can go on an English biodata too.
Setting It Up
Open the biodata maker and pick Malayalam as the language. The "Top of the Biodata" card has three parts: God / Symbol, Blessing Line and Biodata Title. When you are ready for the rest of the page, you can make a Malayalam biodata here.
For lines in other Indian languages, see our guide on what to write at the top of a marriage biodata.
