The jataka part of a Kannada marriage biodata has four main rows: rashi, nakshatra with pada, lagna and kuja dosha. Gotra, dasha shesha (the dasha balance at birth) and tithi can be added. Write each exactly as the jataka says, for example "Nakshatra: Rohini, 2nd pada".
These are the rows the family jois (astrologer) reads first. One wrong letter and the matching starts with a doubt.
What Each Jataka Row Means
| Row | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Rasi | The sign the moon was in at birth | Simha |
| Nakshatra | The star the moon was in at birth | Pubba |
| Pada | One of the four quarters of the nakshatra | 1st pada |
| Lagna | The sign rising in the east at the time of birth | Kataka |
| Kuja dosha | Whether Mars is placed as a dosha | No |
| Gotra | The father's lineage | Vasishtha |
| Dasha shesha | The dasha running at birth and how much was left | Shukra dasha, 18 years 10 months |
| Tithi | The lunar day of birth | Shukla Panchami |
The sample is a made-up boy born on 3 July 1995 at 8:05 am in Shivamogga. Rasi, nakshatra, pada, lagna, dasha and tithi above are what our form works out for those birth details. The kuja dosha and gotra rows are made up.
In our form the rows are called Rasi, Nakshatra, Lagna and Chevvai / Manglik. On a Kannada biodata the last one prints as ಕುಜ ದೋಷ (kuja dosha). Gotra, Dasa at Birth and Tithi are under Add More Details in the Horoscope section.
Kannada Star and Sign Names
A Kannada biodata prints the names the way Kannada jatakas write them. A few look different from the names North Indian families use, which can confuse a reader from outside Karnataka.
| On a Kannada biodata | Also called |
|---|---|
| Aridra | Ardra |
| Pubba | Purva Phalguni |
| Uttara | Uttara Phalguni |
| Chitta | Chitra |
| Moola | Mula |
| Kataka (rashi) | Karka, Kark |
| Dhanussu (rashi) | Dhanu |
If the other family reads English better, make an English copy of the biodata. Our page on jataka matching in Kannada families lists all 27 stars.
The pada prints on the nakshatra row. On a Kannada biodata it reads like "Pubba, 1ne pada" in Kannada script, and on an English one "Pubba, Pada 1".
What Our Form Fills by Itself
Give the date, time and place of birth and the form works out rashi, nakshatra, pada and lagna. Add Dasa at Birth or Tithi and those are worked out too. The calculation uses the Lahiri ayanamsa.
Karnataka homes use different panchangas. Most days they agree. They can differ when a baby is born close to the moment the moon moves into the next star. In that case pick what your jataka says from the list, because the jois matching it will read that jataka and not our form.
The Kuja Dosha Row
The kuja dosha row is never filled by itself. It has four choices:
| You pick | A Kannada biodata prints |
|---|---|
| No | Kuja dosha illa (no kuja dosha) |
| Yes | Kuja dosha ide (has kuja dosha) |
| Partial | Bhagashah kuja dosha (partial) |
| Don't Know | Gottilla (not known) |
Ask the jois who wrote the jataka, then choose. If unsure, do not guess No. Pick Don't Know. When the matching shows the truth, a wrong No costs more trust than an honest "not known".
Why Families Write the Gotra
Many Hindu families in Karnataka do not marry within the same gotra. With gotra on the biodata, the other side can check that at a glance.
Families that do not follow gotra need not add the row. Our page on gotra in a marriage biodata explains the custom.
If the Birth Time Is Not Known
You can leave Time of Birth empty. If the moon stayed in one nakshatra all that day, rasi and nakshatra still fill in. Lagna, dasha and tithi stay empty. If the nakshatra changed that day, rasi and nakshatra stay empty too, and you pick them from the jataka.
Never put a guessed time. The lagna changes roughly every two hours, so a guess can give a wrong lagna on paper.
No Rashi Chakra on the Biodata
Our biodata does not print a rashi chakra or navamsha chakra. Everything prints as text rows. Most families ask for the full jataka only after they like the biodata. When they do, photograph the chakra page of the jataka book in good light and send it.
For gana, nadi or mane devaru rows, use Add Your Own Field. Field name "Gana", details "Deva", for example.
Designs for a biodata with horoscope rows are on our marriage biodata with horoscope page. When the rows are ready, you can make a Kannada biodata here.
Common questions
Can I Make a Biodata Without the Jataka?
Yes. Switch off "Include horoscope on the biodata" and the section goes. It switches off by itself when you choose Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsi or Other as the religion.
The Form's Nakshatra and the Jataka's Nakshatra Differ. Which Is Right for the Biodata?
The jataka's. The difference usually comes from the panchanga's method, and the match will be read from your jataka.
Is Dasha Shesha Needed?
No. Some jois ask for it, many do not. Add Dasa at Birth from Add More Details if you want it.
Where Does the Jataka Section Sit on the Page?
After the personal details and before the family details.
