How to Write Family Details in a Tamil Biodata

How to Write Family Details in a Tamil Biodata

The family section of a Tamil biodata has the father's and mother's names and jobs, the brothers and sisters with how many are married, and the native place (sondha ooru) with its district. Most Tamil families also add the thai mama (mother's brother) and many add the kuladeivam (family deity).

After the boy or girl, this is the part the other family reads most. It is where "do we know these people?" starts.

Father and Mother

Tamil biodatas put Thiru. before the father's name and Thirumathi. before the mother's. Many also keep the father's own initial: "Thiru. K. Rajendran". Type the prefix into the name row yourself. The form prints the name as typed.

For the job, give the work and the place. A one-word job makes the reader guess.

Instead ofWrite
Government jobRetired headmaster, Government Higher Secondary School, Needamangalam
BusinessWholesale grocery business, Mannargudi
At homeHomemaker
AgricultureAgriculture, 6 acres of wet land, own land

"Homemaker" is the respectful, everyday word for a mother who runs the home. In Tamil the word families print is illatharasi.

Writing a Late Parent

If the father or mother has passed away, Tamil families write Amarar before the name: "Amarar K. Rajendran". Some write "Kaalanjendra" instead. Both mean late, and neither needs a line of explanation.

In the job row, you can write the work he or she did, like "was a teacher, Government School, Thiruvarur". Or remove the row from its three-dot menu. Do not leave the row empty. An empty row makes people wonder for no reason.

Brothers and Sisters

Our form has a Total and a Married count for Brothers and for Sisters. Two elder sisters, both married, is Sisters: Total 2, Married 2. The biodata prints the count with the married number beside it.

To say where an elder sister is married or what a brother does, add a row with Add Your Own Field:

  • Field Name: Akka
  • Details: Thirumathi. Priya, husband an auditor, Coimbatore

The details box takes up to 120 characters. One row for each sibling is plenty.

The Thai Mama

The thai mama, the mother's brother, has a big place in a Tamil wedding and in the talks before it. When the other family sees his name and town, someone often says, "We know him." That one line can save weeks.

In the family section, open Add More Details and pick Maternal Uncle. Type his name and town together: "Thiru. Palanisamy, Avinashi". On a Tamil biodata the label prints as தாய்மாமா, which reads thai mama.

Other relatives, such as the athai (father's sister) or periyappa, are not needed. If one of them is well known in the native place, add a single row with Add Your Own Field. Our maternal uncle guide shows how other states write the mother's side.

Native Place, and Where the Family Lives Now

The sondha ooru is the family's ancestral town, even if the family has lived in Chennai for 30 years. Write the town and the district: "Needamangalam, Thiruvarur district". Elders use it to work out common relatives, so the district helps.

If the family lives somewhere else now, write that in the Current City row of the contact section. Then the native place and the present town both show without any confusion.

Kuladeivam

Many Tamil biodatas carry the kuladeivam with its temple village, like "Ayyanar, Thirumangalam" or "Karuppasamy, Alagarkoil". The village says more than the deity's name alone, because families with the same kuladeivam temple are often from the same cluster of villages.

There is no ready row for it. Use Add Your Own Field, name it Kuladeivam, and move it next to Native Place with Move Up. Some families keep it in the jathagam section instead. Either place is fine. Just do not write it twice.

Family Type, Family Status and Property

These three are optional, under Add More Details. Family Type is Nuclear Family or Joint Family. Family Status is Middle Class, Upper Middle Class or Affluent.

Property is where families differ the most. Some write only "Own house, Mannargudi" or "8 acres, paddy and coconut". Do not write a money value. It travels to strangers, and it invites the wrong kind of interest.

What to Keep off the Family Section

The father's income does not go on the biodata. The income row belongs to the boy or girl only. Family Status tells the other side the family's position well enough.

Leave out gold, seer and anything about dowry. Leave out family disputes and court cases too. Those come up in person, once there is trust. For the rows every family writes, whatever the language, see our general page on family details in a marriage biodata.

Common questions

What If the Parents Live Separately?

Write both names. Say in one sentence in About Me whom the boy or girl lives with. The details are better told in person.

Should I Write My Brother's Job?

It is not required, but many families do, because the other side will ask. One row with Add Your Own Field is enough.

Where Does the Kuladeivam Go, Family or Jathagam Section?

Either. Many Tamil biodatas keep it in the family section next to the native place.

Do I Need to Write the Thai Mama?

No. It is optional. Most Tamil families add him because elders ask about the mother's side.

Can I Write Amarar in English Letters?

Yes. Type "Amarar" or "Late" before the name. The form prints what you type.
