Family Details in a Bengali Marriage Biodata

Family Details in a Bengali Marriage Biodata

The family section of a Bengali marriage biodata needs both parents' names and work, the number of brothers and sisters with how many are married, and the adi bari. Adi bari is the family's ancestral home. Many families add the maternal uncle (mama), the family type and whether the house is their own. Bengali families read this section almost as closely as the personal details.

The other side's question is "Whose family is this, and from where?" These eight or nine lines should answer it.

Father and Mother

Bengali Hindu biodatas put Sri before the father's name and Smt. (Shrimati) before the mother's. Muslim families often write Md. or Janab before the father's name, and the mother's name often ends in Begum or Khatun. Write it the way your family writes it on letters.

Then the work, with the post and the employer. "Retired ticket examiner, Eastern Railway" gives the other family a picture at once. "Service" gives them nothing.

SituationHow to write it
WorkingSection officer, State Bank of India, Sealdah
RetiredRetired, Eastern Railway
BusinessOwn business, sweet shop, Chandannagar
TeacherPrimary school teacher, Hooghly
At homeHomemaker

If a parent has passed away, Hindu families write "Late" or Swargiya before the name, as in "Late Debasish Sen". Muslim families write Marhum for a father and Marhuma for a mother. You can keep the work row with the job the parent held, such as "was with State Bank of India", or remove it.

If the parents live apart, write the name and work of the parent the son or daughter lives with, or both. The reason can wait for a conversation.

Brothers and Sisters

The form has a Brothers row and a Sisters row, each with two counters, Total and Married. Set the numbers and the line is written for you, like "1 (married)".

For a sibling's job or where a married sister lives, use Add Your Own Field. Name it Dada (elder brother) or Didi (elder sister) and write a short line: "Married, jamaibabu is a teacher, lives in Durgapur". The details box takes up to 120 characters, so one line per sibling is cleanest.

For an only child, set both counters to zero. Some families add a line that says "Only child".

Mamabari, Kaka and Jethu

Most Bengali families ask about the mother's side, the mamabari, often through someone who knows them. Add the Maternal Uncle chip under Add More Details in the family section. On a Bengali biodata it prints as Mama. Write his name and town: "Sri Tapan Basu, Barasat".

To mention a kaka (father's younger brother) or jethu (father's elder brother), use Add Your Own Field. One or two known relatives are enough, ideally people through whom the other family can make enquiries. A full list of uncles, aunts and cousins makes the biodata long without telling anyone much more.

Adi Bari and the Present Home

Adi bari is the family's ancestral place. Many Kolkata families write a district now in Bangladesh, such as Dhaka, Faridpur, Barishal or Khulna, even after three generations in Kolkata. That is the Bangal side. Families from West Bengal itself, the Ghoti side, write their ancestral village or town.

Some families still prefer a match from the same side, and many do not mind at all. Writing the adi bari answers the question before it is asked.

In our form, Native Place prints as Adi Bari on a Bengali biodata. Where the family lives now goes in the Current City chip in the contact section, which prints as Bartaman Basasthan (present residence). With both lines filled in, nobody confuses Faridpur with Salt Lake.

Family Type, Status and Property

Under Add More Details there are three more optional chips:

ChipChoices
Family TypeNuclear Family or Joint Family
Family StatusMiddle Class, Upper Middle Class or Affluent
PropertyTyped text, like "Own two-storey house, Shyambazar"

Do not put a rupee value on property. Whether the house is owned, a flat or rented is what most families want to know, and that fits in a few words. Leave out the family's total income too.

A Filled Family Section

The names and places are made up.

Making It in Our Maker

Pick Bengali in the biodata maker and the ready labels print in Bengali script. Labels you type for your own fields print exactly as typed, so on a Bengali biodata type Dada or Didi in Bengali script.

Common questions

Should I Write That My Parents Live Separately?

There is no need on the biodata. Write the parent the person lives with, and explain when the talk moves forward.

Do I Need the Names of Didi's In-Laws?

No. "Married, lives in Durgapur" is enough. The other family can ask later.

Is the Mama's Name Necessary?

It is optional, but many Bengali families make enquiries through the mamabari, so plenty of families include it.

Should a Joint Family List Everyone?

No. Choose Joint Family under Family Type and, if needed, add one sentence in About Me on who lives together.

What Do I Write for Adi Bari If the Family Came from Bangladesh?

Write the district and add "now Bangladesh", for example "Khulna, now Bangladesh".
