Kayastha Marriage Biodata Format

A Kayastha marriage biodata has the usual personal and family details, plus the sub-caste (such as Srivastava, Saxena, Mathur or Bhatnagar), the gotra and the kundli details. Many Kayastha families prefer a match within the same sub-caste, so it goes right in the caste line.

What Goes in a Kayastha Biodata for Marriage?

A Kayastha biodata for marriage follows the North Indian Hindu format. The birth details and the family come first, as on any biodata. On top of that, Kayastha elders look for four lines:

  • the sub-caste, written in the caste line
  • the gotra
  • the kundli details (rashi, nakshatra, manglik) for kundli milan
  • the family's work, often government service or law

This page is about the Chitraguptavanshi Kayasthas of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi and Jharkhand. Bengali Kayasthas and the CKP families of Maharashtra write their biodatas a little differently, and we cover them further down.

The 12 Sub-Castes and How to Write Yours

Kayastha families trace their descent to Chitragupta, and by tradition the 12 Chitraguptavanshi groups come from his twelve sons:

The twelve are Srivastava, Saxena, Mathur, Bhatnagar, Nigam, Asthana, Kulshreshtha, Karna, Gaur, Ambashtha, Suryadhwaj and Valmik.

Often the sub-caste is also the surname. Families who write Sinha, Prasad, Lal or Varma, or simply Kayastha, as a surname should still put the sub-caste on the biodata, because that is the line elders read first.

Our community list has all 12. Type Srivastava in Caste / Community and it comes up straight away. Pick it, or keep typing and write "Kayastha (Srivastava)", which is how most families like to see it. What you type prints exactly as typed.

Gotra, Al and the Mother's Side

Gotra is in Add More Details of the horoscope section. Write the gotra your family uses at pujas and weddings, not one you found online. A girl writes her father's gotra.

Some Kayastha families also use an al (sometimes spelt aal), a smaller division within the sub-caste. Not every family knows its al, and many no longer use it. If yours does, add it with Add Your Own Field and name it Al.

Many families also check the mother's side before going ahead. Write the nana's (mother's father's) name and town under Maternal Uncle or as your own field called Nanihal, so the other side can place the family.

Kundli Details Families Expect

Most Kayastha families match the kundli before the first meeting, for gun milan and manglik dosh. Gun milan is the North Indian match of eight points, scored out of 36. Our page on 36 gun milan explains how the score is worked out.

The form fills rashi, nakshatra with pada, and lagna from the date, time and place of birth, using the Lahiri ayanamsa. Check the birth time against the janam kundli or the hospital record. A few minutes can change the lagna.

Manglik is never filled for you. Choose No, Yes, Partial or Don't Know in the Chevvai / Manglik line, going by what your family pandit has said.

Service Family Wording

Kayastha families have a long record in government service and the courts, and the biodata usually says so in full. Give the post with the department and the city:

  • Deputy Collector (retired), UP government
  • Advocate, Patna High Court, 8 years' practice
  • Assistant professor of Hindi, a government college, Bhopal

For a private job, write the company and designation, with the city. "Working in IT" tells the other side nothing.

Chitragupta Line at the Top

Many Kayastha biodatas print a line to Chitragupta Maharaj at the top, and others print the Ganesha line. Our Hindi list starts with ॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥ and has no Chitragupta line of its own. To print one, tap Write My Own under Blessing Line and type it, for example "Shri Chitraguptaya Namah", in English letters or in Hindi.

Bengali Kayastha and CKP Families

Bengali Kayastha families (Bose, Ghosh or Mitra, for example) usually print a Bengali biodata with the gotra. The Bengali marriage biodata page shows that format.

CKP (Chandraseniya Kayastha Prabhu) families in Maharashtra usually write a Marathi biodata with the kuldaivat and gotra. Choose Marathi as the print language and add Kuldaivat as your own field.

Hindi or English?

Families in UP and Bihar often print in Hindi. Families in Delhi or abroad often print in English. Type the details in English and choose the print language. In Hindi the labels print in Devanagari. So do rashi and nakshatra. Names and the lines you typed print as you typed them. See the Hindi marriage biodata page for the Hindi print.
