A low budget wedding in India is possible, and the two cheapest legal routes are a court marriage under the Special Marriage Act, 1954, or a temple wedding followed by registration. Both can be done with close family and one simple meal. The guest count decides most of the cost, so a wedding of 50 people costs a fraction of one with 500.
A wedding under 5 lakh is very doable in most towns if the guest list stays near 150 and there is only one main function.
Four Simple Wedding Formats
These four routes cover most low-budget weddings. Each one is a legal marriage when done properly.
| Format | What happens | Main costs |
|---|---|---|
| Temple wedding | The rituals are done at a temple, with the family priest or the temple's own | Temple fee, priest's dakshina, flowers, a lunch nearby |
| Arya Samaj wedding | A short Vedic ceremony at an Arya Samaj mandir, usually under an hour | Mandir fee, garlands, sweets |
| Court marriage plus reception | A civil marriage before the Marriage Officer, then one meal or reception | Government fee, notary charges, the meal |
| Home wedding | The rituals at home or on the terrace, with a small pandal | Pandal, priest, home-cooked or catered food |
Temple Wedding
A Hindu wedding is valid when it follows the customary rites of either side, and where those rites include saptapadi, the marriage is complete at the seventh step. That is section 7 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. A temple is a fine place for it.
Many families in the south already marry this way. The Guruvayur temple in Kerala, for one, is known for dozens of weddings on a single muhurtham day. Ask the temple office about the booking fee, the time slot and how many people can stand in the mandapam.
After a temple wedding, register the marriage with the registrar under your state's rules. Ask the temple for a receipt or letter, and take photos of the ritual for the registrar.
Arya Samaj Wedding
An Arya Samaj wedding is a short Vedic ceremony with havan and saptapadi, done at a mandir with a few witnesses. It is quick and cheap. The mandir's own certificate is not the government's marriage certificate, though, so register the marriage with your state's registrar afterwards.
Court Marriage Plus a Reception
A court marriage is the lowest-cost route of all. Government fees under the Special Marriage Act are small. You give a 30-day notice to the Marriage Officer of a district where one of you has lived for at least 30 days (section 5 of the Special Marriage Act, 1954). Three witnesses sign on the day.
Families then hold a lunch or a small reception for relatives. The ritual and the party are separate, so the party can be as small as you like. Our court marriage process page has every step, with the state fees.
Home Wedding
A home wedding works for families with a large house, a terrace or a common hall in the apartment. The priest, a small pandal and food for 40 to 80 people are the main costs. Check with the society secretary about noise and parking before you fix the date.
Three Sample Budgets, Worked Out
These are worked examples, not market prices. The rates in them are only there to show the arithmetic. Put in the quotes you get in your own town, because a per-plate rate in Coimbatore and one in Gurugram can be very different.
Sample 1, Temple Wedding and Lunch for 60
| Item | How to work it out | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Temple booking and priest | Ask the temple office | Your quote |
| Lunch | 60 guests x per-plate rate | At ₹300 a plate, ₹18,000 |
| Bride's saree and groom's veshti or kurta | Your choice | Your budget |
| Thali or mangalsutra | By weight of gold | Your jeweller's quote |
| Flowers and garlands | Florist quote | Your quote |
| Photographer for 3 hours | One photographer, no album | Your quote |
Sample 2, About 150 Guests, One Function
Here the meal is the big line. At an example rate of ₹500 a plate, 150 guests come to ₹75,000. A small hall for half a day, a priest, one photographer, simple stage flowers and the couple's clothes come on top. Keep the jewellery modest and 5 lakh is a realistic ceiling at this size. Do the sum with your own quotes in our wedding budget planner.
Sample 3, About 300 Guests, Wedding and Reception
Double the guests and add a second meal, and the cost climbs fast. At ₹600 a plate, 300 guests at lunch is ₹1,80,000. If 200 come to an evening reception at ₹700 a plate, that is another ₹1,40,000.
So food alone is ₹3,20,000 in this example. Add hall rent for a full day, decor, clothes and jewellery, and a total near 10 lakh comes quickly. The second function is what pushes it there.
What to Cut First, and What Not to Cut
Cut these first. Nobody remembers them a year later.
- A second or third function. Combine the haldi and mehendi in one morning, or skip the sangeet.
- Big stage decor. A flower backdrop and a few lights look fine in photos.
- The printed album. Keep the digital photos and print 20 good ones.
- Costly invitation boxes. Print a small number of cards for elders.
- A drone, a LED wall and a live counter for every dish.
Do not cut these.
- The priest's fees and the ritual items. The ceremony is the part that makes it a wedding.
- Food quality. Fewer dishes, yes. Cheap, stale food, no.
- Marriage registration. It costs little, and every name change and visa later needs the certificate.
- One reliable photographer for the main ritual.
How Many Guests for an Intimate Wedding?
An intimate wedding usually means 50 to 100 guests: both sets of parents, siblings, grandparents, uncles and aunts, and a few close friends. That is a common size, not a rule.
Control the list early. Each side gets a fixed number, written down, and both families agree to it. If the groom's side has 50 seats, the 51st name has to replace someone.
Be honest with relatives who are left out. A line on the card, or a WhatsApp message saying the wedding is a small family function at the temple, avoids hurt feelings later. Inviting them to a simple reception, or sending sweets, also helps.
Free and Cheap Substitutes
- Invitations on WhatsApp. A digital card made on the phone costs nothing to send, and most friends and colleagues are happy with it.
- Flowers from the local market on the morning of the wedding, strung by the family the night before.
- A cousin who takes good phone photos, for the smaller functions.
- Steel plates and banana leaves borrowed or rented from the temple or community hall.
- Return gifts that cost little and get used: a small steel box, a pack of sweets, a coconut and betel leaves.
- The biodata for the match. If the search is still on, a printed biodata from a shop is not needed. You can make a biodata on the phone for free and share the PDF on WhatsApp.
