A destination wedding in India is one held away from both families' home towns, with guests travelling and staying for two or three days. Its cost is counted per guest. Rooms for every night, every meal, travel. That is why most destination weddings keep the list to about 100 people.
Goa, Udaipur, Jaipur and Kerala are the usual choices, and October to March is the main season for most of them.
The trade body CAIT, in its release on the 2025 wedding season, noted a surge in luxury and destination weddings in Rajasthan and Gujarat, and said families increasingly prefer Indian destinations over international venues.
Is a Destination Wedding Right for You?
A destination wedding suits families with a short guest list and a budget for hosting everyone for two or three days. It also suits couples whose families live in different cities, so nobody is "the host town".
It is a poor fit if elderly grandparents cannot travel, or if both families expect 600 people. Every extra guest at a destination costs a room, about six meals and a seat on a bus or train. At home, the same guest costs one plate.
Ask the two families three plain questions before booking anything:
- Who must be there, and can each of them travel?
- Who pays for guests' rooms and travel, the host or the guests themselves?
- Will there be a second reception at home for everyone who could not come?
The third question changes the budget a lot. Many families hold a destination wedding for 80 people and then a reception at home for 400.
How Much Does a Destination Wedding Cost in India?
Nobody publishes a reliable average cost for destination weddings in India, and prices change by hotel, month and weekday. So work out your own figure per guest, with quotes from two or three hotels or resorts.
| Cost line | How to count it |
|---|---|
| Rooms | Rooms needed x nights x room rate. Two guests to a room is common |
| Food | Guests x number of meals x per-plate rate. A two-night stay is about six meals |
| Venue and decor | The venue fee for each function, and the decor package |
| Travel | Train or flight tickets, and local transfers from the station or airport |
| Rituals and vendors | Priest, photographer, makeup artist, and their travel and stay |
| Your own costs | Clothes, jewellery and gifts, the same as any wedding |
Then divide the total by the number of guests. That cost per head is the number to compare between Goa and Udaipur, or between a resort and a hotel in the same city.
Two things push the number up fast. Peak dates, such as a Saturday in December or a popular muhurtham, raise room rates. And many resorts ask you to book a whole block of rooms, used or not.
Our page on wedding cost in India has the national average from CAIT's figures. Put your own rows into our wedding budget planner, with an extra column for rooms.
Is a Destination Wedding Cheaper than a Home-City Wedding?
A destination wedding can cost less in total if it replaces a large home wedding with a much smaller guest list. For the same number of guests, it almost always costs more, because you pay for rooms and travel as well as food.
Best Places and the Best Season for Each
The right season depends mostly on heat and rain. The table gives the usual pattern. Check the weather and the hotel's own off-season dates before booking.
| Destination | Good months | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Goa | November to February | Heavy rain from June to September. Beach venues need a backup hall |
| Udaipur, Rajasthan | October to March | Palaces and lake hotels. May and June are very hot |
| Jaipur, Rajasthan | October to March | Forts and heritage hotels, good train and air links |
| Kerala (Kumarakom, Kovalam) | October to March | The monsoon reaches Kerala around the start of June |
| Rishikesh, Uttarakhand | October to March | Ganga ghats and riverside resorts. Winter nights are cold |
| Jim Corbett, Uttarakhand | October to March | Forest resorts. Avoid the monsoon months |
| Andaman Islands | November to April | Guests must fly in, which raises travel cost |
Winter is also the main wedding season across North India, with many muhurat dates from November to February. Your purohit will give you the dates for the year. Book the venue only after the muhurat is fixed.
Temple and Spiritual Destinations
Some families pick a temple town for the ritual and keep everything simple. Tirupati, Guruvayur and Madurai in the south, and Haridwar, Rishikesh and Varanasi in the north are common choices. Guruvayur temple is well known for many short weddings on a single muhurtham day.
A temple destination usually costs less than a palace hotel, because the ritual is short and the guest list is small. Ask the temple office about booking, timings and the number of people allowed near the mandapam. Then book a nearby hall or hotel for the lunch.
Marriage Registration Away from Home
A Hindu wedding done with the customary rites is valid wherever it happens, under section 7 of the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. The registration that follows is under each state's own rules. Ask the registrar in the place of the wedding, and in your home district, which office will register it and what proof they need. Keep the hotel or temple receipt, the wedding photos and the witnesses' ID ready.
Goa has its own system. Marriages there are registered under the Code of Civil Registration irrespective of religion, through Civil Registrar offices in each taluka, as the Goa Registration Department explains. Ask the Civil Registrar about residence proof and waiting periods before you plan a civil wedding in Goa.
A court marriage at the destination is usually not practical. Under section 5 of the Special Marriage Act, 1954, notice goes to the Marriage Officer of a district where one of you has lived for at least 30 days. Most couples do the court marriage at home and hold the celebration at the destination.
