An Indian in Germany should add the city, the residence title (EU Blue Card, work permit, settlement permit or student visa), the gross yearly salary in euros, and how much German they speak. If you hold an EU Blue Card, also say so clearly. According to Germany's federal migration office, a Blue Card holder's spouse can get a residence title without knowing German and may work from the start.
The rest of the biodata does not change. Family, education and horoscope go in as usual.
What Families in India Ask About a Germany Proposal
Germany is newer for most Indian families than the USA or the Gulf. Many have a nephew who went to Munich or Berlin for a master's in the last ten years, and that is about all they know.
So the questions are basic, and fair. Is it a permanent job? Will our daughter have to learn German? Can she work there? How cold is it? Is there a temple nearby?
You cannot answer the weather question on a biodata. The others you can.
How to Write Your Residence Status
Germany calls a visa or permit a "residence title". Use the name on your card.
| Your status | Write it as |
|---|---|
| Highly skilled worker | EU Blue Card, Munich, since 2022 |
| Other skilled job | Residence permit for skilled employment, Stuttgart |
| Permanent | Settlement permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis), Frankfurt |
| Student | Student visa, MS at a German university, finishing 2027 |
| Job seeker after studies | Residence permit to look for work after graduation, Berlin |
| Citizen | German citizen, OCI card holder |
Write the year you got the card. "Blue Card since 2021, settlement permit applied" is the kind of line a cousin in Germany will read and nod at.
Salary in Euros, Gross per Year
German salaries are agreed as a gross yearly figure, so write "EUR 68,000 gross per year". Our Annual Income field prints whatever you type, so put "gross" in. Tax and social contributions in Germany take a large share, and a family that later hears the take-home figure may feel misled if you leave the word out.
Skip the rupee conversion. If parents want one, put it in brackets, and add a line in About Me about how you live: "Rented two-room flat, 20 minutes from work by tram."
Does the Spouse Need to Learn German?
This is the question a working girl's family asks first, and the answer depends on your residence title.
The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) page on the EU Blue Card says spouses of Blue Card holders can get a residence title without knowledge of German, and get immediate and unlimited permission to work.
For other residence titles, the spouse may have to show basic German (level A1) before the visa. The German Embassy in New Delhi lists the family reunion rules on its family reunion visa FAQ. Read it for your own card, because the answer differs case by case.
So write one line that is true for you:
- "EU Blue Card. Spouse can join without German and can work."
- "Skilled work permit. Spouse may need A1 German for the visa. Happy to help with classes."
Even where German is not needed for the visa, daily life is easier with it. A line like "I speak German at B1 level" tells the family you have settled in.
Time Difference with India
Germany is 4 hours 30 minutes behind India in winter and 3 hours 30 minutes behind in summer, when clocks move forward from late March to late October. At 7 pm in Pune in October, it is 3:30 pm in Hamburg.
Weekday calls usually work best in the Indian evening, after office hours in Germany end. Write "Free for calls after 6 pm German time" if your parents will share the biodata with many families.
India Contact and the OTP
Put a Contact Person in India, usually a parent, with an Indian mobile number. Families in India prefer to start with the parents.
Our maker checks one mobile number by OTP before the first download, and only Indian (+91) numbers work. A German number will not get the code. Use a parent's number, which also makes them the person who shares the biodata.
