First Onam After Marriage, Onakkodi, Sadya and Visits

A couple's first Onam after marriage is usually spent with the bride's family in many Kerala homes. Her parents give onakkodi, new clothes for Onam, to their daughter and son-in-law, and the couple eats the Thiruvonam sadya with them. On the days after, they visit the groom's home and close relatives. In 2027, Thiruvonam falls on Sunday, 12 September, as per Drik Panchang for Thiruvananthapuram.

Customs differ by family, community and district. Some families keep the first Onam at the groom's home, and many couples living in Bengaluru or the Gulf simply celebrate wherever they get leave. Treat what follows as the common pattern, and ask both mothers what they expect.

Is the First Onam After Marriage Called by a Special Name?

Not in the way Tamil families say Thalai Deepavali or Thalai Pongal for a couple's first Deepavali or Pongal. In Kerala, families simply call it the first Onam, aadyathe Onam in Malayalam.

Kerala does have a special name for one first-year festival for a bride. Her first Thiruvathira after marriage, in the month of Dhanu, is called Poothiruvathira, and women of the family gather for it. Onam has no such separate name, but the first one is still treated as special.

Onakkodi, the New Clothes

Onakkodi is the custom of giving new clothes for Onam. For the first Onam, the bride's parents usually give it to the couple.

Many families buy matching kasavu for the couple so they can be photographed together at the sadya. Some add a small gold piece for the daughter. That depends entirely on the family.

The groom's family often gives onakkodi too, either at their own home later in the week or before Onam. Nobody keeps score, but the mothers will remember.

Whose Home for the Thiruvonam Sadya?

In many families, the couple eats the Thiruvonam sadya at the bride's home. The groom is the guest of honour and is served first, on a banana leaf, with every dish.

A common plan for the four main days:

If both homes are in the same town, families sometimes split the day. Lunch at one home, evening tea and payasam at the other. If one family is in Kozhikode and the other in Kottayam, the couple cannot do both on one day. Agree early so nobody waits with a full sadya.

Onam is celebrated by many Christian and Muslim families in Kerala too, as a harvest festival. The first-Onam visits work the same way in many of these homes, without the temple visit.

What the Couple Does

A few things that make a first Onam go well:

1. The bride helps her mother with the pookalam on the morning of Thiruvonam, as she did before marriage. Relatives like to see this.
2. The groom joins the men of the house for the shopping on Uthradom, the day of the "Uthradapachil" rush.
3. The couple takes blessings from the elders before the sadya.
4. They carry a gift for the bride's parents: a set-mundu for her mother, a mundu for her father, or a sweet box.
5. They join the Onakalikal (Onam games) if the neighbourhood or family plays them. Tug of war with in-laws breaks the ice fast.

If the groom is not from Kerala, tell him what is coming. A first-time sadya guest who does not know the order of dishes will be taught, with great joy, by every aunt in the house.

Onam Dates to Plan Around

Onam falls in the Malayalam month of Chingam, when the moon is in the Thiruvonam (Shravana) nakshatra. Drik Panchang's Onam page for Thiruvananthapuram gives Thiruvonam on Sunday, 12 September 2027. The Thiruvonam nakshatra there runs from 2:58 am on 12 September to 6:04 am on 13 September 2027. Celebrations start ten days earlier, on Atham day.
