Karva Chauth in 2026 falls on Thursday, 29 October. Drik Panchang gives the moonrise in New Delhi at 8:17 pm and the puja muhurat from 5:38 pm to 6:56 pm.
For a new bride, the first Karva Chauth is a bigger occasion than later ones. She gets sargi from her mother-in-law before dawn, baya goes from her own family to the in-laws, and she usually wears her bridal outfit or something close to it.
Karva Chauth is mainly kept in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and nearby states. If your family is new to it, this page explains each part in order.

Its festival page, set for Ujjain, prints the date as 30 October, so a few calendars may show that day. Most families in North India will keep the fast on 29 October. If in doubt, follow your family pandit.
Moonrise changes from city to city by several minutes, sometimes more. Check the time for your own city on the panchang. On a cloudy night, the wait can be long.
What Makes the First Karva Chauth Special
The fast is kept by married women for the long life and well-being of their husbands. Karva means an earthen pot, and chauth means the fourth day. It falls on the fourth day of the waning moon in Kartik, by the North Indian calendar.
The first one is special because the bride is new to the house and the whole family watches. The mother-in-law prepares the sargi. The bride's parents send the baya or baayna. Relatives often come for the evening puja. In many homes, the bride also gets her first Karva Chauth gift from her husband.
Sargi and Baya Explained
Sargi is the meal the mother-in-law gives the bride to eat before sunrise on the day of the fast. It is eaten in the early morning, often around 4 to 5 am, and it has to last her the whole day.
A common sargi list:
- mathri, feni or seviyan cooked in milk
- dry fruits, like almonds, cashews and dates
- fresh fruit
- a sweet, often a coconut or besan barfi
- tea, milk or coconut water
- shringar items: bangles, sindoor, bindi, mehendi
- often a new saree or suit
Baya (also called baayna) goes the other way. It is a gift sent from the bride's parents to her in-laws, usually on the morning of the fast or a day before. It often has sweets, mathri, dry fruits, clothes for the mother-in-law, and sometimes cash in an envelope. The amount and the contents vary a lot by family. Nobody should feel pressure to send something beyond their means.
Shringar and What to Wear
On her first Karva Chauth, a bride usually wears her wedding lehenga or a red, maroon or pink saree. Red is the traditional colour, but any bright, festive outfit is fine.
The solah shringar (16 adornments) usually includes sindoor, bindi, mehendi, bangles, mangalsutra, the nose ring, earrings, toe rings, anklets, the maang tikka, kajal, a gajra in the hair, and so on. Apply mehendi a day before. Many brides get it done at a beauty parlour or by a relative the evening before.
Comfort counts too. It is a long evening.
Vrat Rules and Puja Vidhi for a New Bride
The traditional Karva Chauth fast is nirjala, without food or water, from sunrise until the moon is seen.
The usual order of the day:
- Eat the sargi before sunrise.
- Take a sankalp (resolve) for the fast, often with the mother-in-law.
- Fast through the day. Many women rest, apply mehendi and get ready in the afternoon.
- In the evening, during the puja muhurat, women gather for the puja. They place a picture or idol of Gauri, Shiva and Ganesha, a karva (pot) filled with water, and a thali with a lamp, roli, rice and sweets.
- The katha is read or told, and the thalis are passed around in a circle seven times while singing.
- After moonrise, the woman looks at the moon through a sieve, offers water (arghya) to the moon, and then looks at her husband's face through the same sieve.
- The husband gives her the first sip of water and the first bite of food, and she breaks the fast.
Exceptions are common and sensible. A bride who is pregnant, unwell, diabetic or on medicine should not keep a nirjala fast. Many families allow fruit, milk or water for such cases. Ask the doctor and decide as a family. The tradition is about care, and no elder would want it to harm her health.
The Katha in Short
The best-known Karva Chauth story is of Veeravati, a queen and the only sister of seven brothers. On her first Karva Chauth she became faint with hunger. Her brothers could not bear it. They lit a fire behind a tree and showed her the glow through a sieve, saying the moon had risen. She broke her fast. Soon after, word came that her husband had died.
Through her devotion and by keeping the fast properly the next year, her husband's life was restored.
Different families tell other stories too, such as the story of Karva and the crocodile. The katha book given with the puja thali usually has the version your family follows.
Gifts for the Wife, and the Husband
The first Karva Chauth gift from the husband is a tradition in many homes. Ideas that are popular and sensible:
| Gift | Rough idea |
|---|---|
| Jewellery | A ring, earrings or a small gold or silver pendant |
| Saree or suit | Something she chose, or a Banarasi or Phulkari piece |
| A watch or handbag | For a working wife |
| An experience | A dinner out after the fast, or a short trip |
| A handwritten letter | Costs nothing, often kept for years |
Gold bought for the occasion should be hallmarked. The BIS hallmarking page explains how to check it.
Many husbands now keep the fast too, out of solidarity. It is a personal choice. If he does, the evening becomes a shared one.
