On her first Raksha Bandhan after marriage, a new bride usually ties rakhi to her own brothers, either by going to her parents' home for the day or by her brothers visiting her new home.
In the same house, her husband's sisters tie rakhi to him, and in many Marwari and Rajasthani families they tie a lumba rakhi to her as well. In 2027, Raksha Bandhan is on Tuesday, 17 August.
The first one is mostly about planning. Two families now want the same couple on the same morning.
Raksha Bandhan 2027 Date and Rakhi Time
Drik Panchang gives these timings for New Delhi.
| Item | Time |
|---|---|
| Raksha Bandhan | Tuesday, 17 August 2027 |
| Purnima tithi | 10:28 am on 16 August to 12:58 pm on 17 August |
| Time to tie rakhi | 5:51 am to 12:58 pm on 17 August |
| Bhadra | Over before sunrise on 17 August |
So the rakhi has to be tied in the morning. That shapes the whole day. If the bride is travelling to her parents' home, she needs to reach before 1 pm, or her brothers need to reach her. Times differ a little by city, so check Drik Panchang for yours.
Where Does the New Bride Celebrate?
There is no single rule. Families usually decide by distance and by custom.
| Situation | What families usually do |
|---|---|
| Both homes in the same city | Morning at the in-laws' house for the husband's sisters, then lunch at the bride's parents' house |
| Homes a few hours apart | Bride and husband go to her parents' home the evening before, or her brothers come to her in the morning |
| Homes far apart, or abroad | Rakhi sent by post, a video call at the muhurat, and a visit later |
| The husband's sisters live far away | The bride spends the day at her parents' home |
In much of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan, the new bride often spends the monsoon festivals of her first year, such as Teej, at her parents' home. Raksha Bandhan comes right after, so many brides are already at the maika. Our page on the first Teej after marriage explains that custom.
The sensible way is to ask the mother-in-law two or three weeks before. "Ma, should I go home on Rakhi, or should my brothers come here?" Asking early shows respect. Assuming does not.
Gifts for Her Brothers
The bride brings the rakhis, roli, rice, a diya and sweets. Her brothers give her a gift or cash, as on every Raksha Bandhan.
The first year often has a little more. Common choices:
- Rakhis she picked herself, often a pair for the brother and his wife if he is married
- Sweets from her new city, so her brothers get a taste of where she lives now
- A small gift for each brother from the couple, given by the husband
Her parents often give the couple clothes and sweets to take back, and some send something for the in-laws too. Keep the gifts in proportion. The first Raksha Bandhan is not a second wedding.
Rakhi for Her Husband's Sisters
The husband's sisters tie rakhi to him, as before. The difference now is that the new bride is the hostess.
She usually prepares the thali, arranges the sweets and serves the food. The couple gives each sister a gift together, and many families expect the first gift from the bhabhi to be a little special. A suit, a saree, a piece of jewellery or a good handbag are common choices, depending on the sister's age.
If a sister is younger and still studying, cash or a gadget she wants often works better than a saree. Ask the husband. He knows.
What Is Lumba Rakhi?
A lumba rakhi is a hanging rakhi tied to the brother's wife, on her bangle or wrist. It is common in Marwari and Rajasthani families and has spread to many other North Indian homes.
On her first Raksha Bandhan, the new bride may get her first lumba rakhi from her husband's sisters. It is a small welcome into the family. She usually gives the sister a gift in return, along with the gift the couple gives together.
Travel Etiquette
- Tell your in-laws your plan at least two weeks before.
- If you are going to your parents' home, ask whether your husband will come along. Most families expect him to.
- Leave early enough to reach before the rakhi time ends. In 2027 that is 12:58 pm in Delhi.
- Do not plan a long stay without asking. A day or two is usual unless the in-laws suggest more.
- Carry sweets for your parents' home from your new home, and bring something back for the in-laws.
- If you cannot travel, post the rakhi at least a week before, and fix a video call time with your brothers.
A bride who handles the first one smoothly sets the pattern for the years ahead. Our page on how to deal with in-laws has more on early conversations like this one.
If Her Brother Lives Abroad
Many families now have a brother in Dubai, Toronto or Melbourne. Post the rakhi two to three weeks ahead from India, because international post takes time, and add a small packet of roli and rice. Fix the video call so it is morning in India and a reasonable hour for him.
Some brothers abroad send the gift as money directly. That is fine. The call matters more.
