Kundli Not Matching but You Want to Marry, What You Can Do

If your kundli is not matching but you want to marry, start by finding out exactly which part failed. Then check whether a cancellation rule applies, get a proper second opinion, and talk to your parents with that information. Kundli matching has no legal weight. Any two adults can marry, matched or not. The real question is how to bring the family along.

This page is for the couple, usually in a love marriage or a match they both like, who have just heard "the gunas are only 14".

Why Families Take a Mismatch Seriously

For many parents, the horoscope is the one part of the decision that feels outside their control. If something goes wrong later, they do not want to have ignored a warning.

So when the pandit says "this match is not good", parents hear "we are putting our child at risk". Arguing that astrology is not science rarely helps in that moment. Understanding what exactly failed usually does.

Which Mismatches Matter Most?

Gun milan (ashtakoot) scores eight kootas out of 36. Not all of them carry the same weight. Drik Panchang's matching page puts 31 to 36 in its excellent band, 21 to 30 as very good, 17 to 20 as middling and 16 or below as inauspicious. It also says nadi koota is given "supreme priority".

MismatchPoints lostHow astrologers usually treat it
Nadi dosha (same nadi)8The most serious; even a high total can be read as poor
Bhakoot dosha7Serious; no match is read as excellent when bhakoot fails
Gana mismatchUp to 6Moderate; often weighed with the rest
Low total (below 18)VariesDepends on which kootas scored low
Manglik on one side onlySeparate checkMany families treat it as a big issue; cancellations are common
Yoni, vashya, tara, varnaSmallMinor on their own

So "only 16 gunas" and "nadi dosha" are different problems. Ask which one you have. Our guide on how many gun should match for marriage explains the score bands in detail.

Cancellation (Parihar) Rules in Brief

Classical matching has exceptions, called cancellations or parihar. When one applies, the astrologer treats the dosha as not counting.

A few examples astrologers mention:

  • Nadi dosha is often treated as cancelled when both share the same rasi but have different nakshatras, or the same nakshatra in different padas, depending on the astrologer's rules.
  • Bhakoot dosha is often treated as cancelled when the lords of the two rasis are the same planet or are friends.
  • Manglik dosha is commonly treated as cancelled when both partners are manglik, and in certain placements of Mars.

Different astrologers follow different lists. Online calculators also differ. That is a reason to get the details in writing, not a reason to give up.

Get a Second Opinion Properly

A second opinion is useful only if it is done fairly. Do it like this:

  1. Check the birth details first. Date, exact time and place, for both. A time that is off by half an hour can change the lagna, and a birth near a star change can change the nakshatra and nadi.
  2. Ask the first astrologer to write down which kootas scored what and which doshas they found.
  3. Go to a second astrologer the family respects, with the same details. Do not tell them what the first one said.
  4. Ask them to check cancellations by name.
  5. Compare the two reports, koota by koota.

If both agree that nadi or bhakoot fails with no cancellation, accept that this is what your parents will hear. If they disagree, you have something real to discuss at home.

Remedies Families Use

When a dosha stays, many families do a remedy before the wedding and go ahead. Common ones are a Maha Mrityunjaya jaap for nadi dosha, specific pujas for bhakoot, and for manglik dosha, a mangal shanti puja or kumbh vivah. Our guide to manglik dosha remedies covers the manglik side.

Be careful with money. No remedy needs lakhs of rupees, and no honest astrologer promises that a puja will "fix" a marriage. If someone pushes a costly package, get another opinion.

Talking to Parents

Go to your parents with facts, not feelings. "The total is 16, but nadi and bhakoot are both full, and the second pandit says the low score comes from minor kootas" is a strong opening. "Astrology is nonsense" is not.

What tends to help:

  • Show both reports side by side.
  • Offer to do the remedy they believe in. It costs you little and means a lot to them.
  • Let them meet your partner and their family more than once. A mother who likes the boy argues less about the gunas.
  • Ask what exactly they are afraid of. Sometimes the horoscope is standing in for another worry, like caste or distance.
  • Give them time.

Couples Who Married Anyway, What to Expect

Plenty of couples marry without matching horoscopes, or after a poor match. Many families in India never match horoscopes at all, and many love marriages skip it.

If you go ahead against the reading, expect this: whenever there is a fight, an illness or a delay in having children, someone may blame the horoscope. Decide together now that you will not. Problems in a marriage need to be solved, whatever the chart says.

In law nothing changes. A Hindu marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 does not need a horoscope, and neither does a court marriage.

Is Kundli Matching Necessary for Love Marriage?

No, not legally and not in every family. It is a family custom. Some families match only to see if there is a serious dosha. Some do not match at all for a love marriage. If your family insists, treat the reading as one input, and go through the steps above.

If both families do match, put the rasi, nakshatra and time of birth on the biodata so the other side's astrologer can check quickly. You can make a biodata with horoscope details and share it as a PDF.

Common questions

What If Our Kundli Doesn't Match but We Love Each Other?

Find out which koota failed, check cancellations, and get a fair second opinion. Then talk to your parents with that information. Legally, nothing stops you from marrying.

How Many Gunas Are Needed for Marriage?

Drik Panchang treats 17 to 20 as middling and 21 or more as very good, while many families use 18 as a working minimum. Which kootas scored zero matters more than the total.

Is Nadi Dosha a Deal-Breaker?

Many astrologers treat it as the most serious mismatch. Some apply cancellations, for example when both share the same rasi but different nakshatras. Ask your astrologer which rules they follow.

Can Kundli Mismatch Be Cancelled?

Some doshas have cancellation rules in classical astrology, and astrologers apply them differently. Get the cancellation checked by name and in writing.

Is Kundli Matching Necessary for a Love Marriage?

No. It is a family custom with no legal role. Families who want it can treat it as one input among many.
