Naga dosham, also called sarpa dosham or Rahu-Kethu dosham, is the name Tamil and Kerala astrologers give to Rahu or Ketu sitting in certain houses of the jathagam, most often the 1st, 2nd, 7th or 8th counted from the lagnam. In marriage matching, most jothidars handle it like chevvai dosham: a jathagam with naga dosham is matched with another that has a similar dosham.
It is a chart dosham, read from one person's horoscope. It is not one of the 10 poruthams.
What Naga Dosham Means
Rahu and Ketu are the two shadow planets, always opposite each other in the chart. In Tamil they are called the naga grahas, the snake planets. When either sits in a house linked with marriage, family or long life, many jothidars call it naga dosham.
The houses most often named:
| House from lagnam | What it stands for in marriage reading |
|---|---|
| 1st | The person's own nature and health |
| 2nd | Family, speech and family wealth |
| 7th | The spouse and the marriage |
| 8th | Longevity and the bond after marriage |
Since Rahu and Ketu are always 180 degrees apart, Rahu in the 1st means Ketu in the 7th, and Rahu in the 2nd means Ketu in the 8th. So these four houses come in two pairs.
Some astrologers add the 4th and 5th houses. Many also check the same houses from the moon (chandra lagnam) and from Venus. Two jothidars may disagree about the same chart, because they use different lists. That is normal, and it is the first thing to ask about: "Which houses did you count?"
Naga Dosham and Kala Sarpa Dosham Are Different
Families often mix up the two.
| Naga dosham | Kala sarpa dosham | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Rahu or Ketu in a sensitive house | All seven planets from the Sun to Saturn on one side of the Rahu-Ketu line |
| How common | Fairly common, because it depends on only two planets | Less common |
| Used in matching | Yes, by many South Indian jothidars | Usually not; it is treated as a chart dosham that needs a remedy |
Our page on doshas in kundli for marriage explains kala sarpa dosham and the other chart doshas.
How Tamil Jothidars Read It in Matching
The rule most Tamil jothidars follow is dosha samyam, balance. A naga dosham jathagam is matched with another naga dosham jathagam, the same way a sevvai dosham jathagam is matched with a sevvai dosham one.
Many jothidars do this as part of papa samyam, the wider check of malefic planets in both charts. Rahu, Ketu, Mars (Sevvai), Saturn (Sani) and the Sun are counted in the sensitive houses of both charts and compared. If the boy's chart carries as much dosham as the girl's, the match is treated as balanced.
So a girl with Rahu in the 7th is usually matched with a boy who has Rahu or Ketu, or sometimes Mars, in a similar position. A boy with no malefics in those houses is, in the strict view, not matched with her. Many jothidars relax this when the rest of the porutham is strong.
Our page on jathagam porutham in Tamil shows how papa samyam fits into the full match.
How Kerala Astrologers Read It
Kerala jothishis give the dosha check a lot of weight, as they do with chovva dosham. Rahu and Ketu are counted along with Mars, Saturn and the Sun when the papa (malefic) points of both charts are compared.
Kerala also uses sarpa dosham in a second sense. Many families link it with the snake worship of their tharavadu (ancestral home), for example a neglected sarpa kavu, the sacred grove for snake deities, or harm done to snakes in the past.
In that sense, an astrologer reads it through prasnam (a question chart), not only from the birth chart. The remedy is then a puja for the family's snake deities, not a change in matching.
Exceptions Jothidars Apply
Before writing "naga dosham undu", most jothidars check a few things. The ones quoted most often:
- Rahu or Ketu in a friendly or strong sign, which many consider to soften the dosham.
- Jupiter (Guru) aspecting the house or the planet.
- The age of the person. Some jothidars treat the dosham as weaker after a certain age, the way some treat chevvai dosham after 28.
These rules differ widely. Ask the jothidar who wrote the jathagam which ones he applied, and get it in writing if a proposal depends on it.
Naga Dosham Pariharam and Temples
Families with naga dosham often do a pariharam (remedy) before or during the match search. These are the temples families name most often.
| Temple | Place | Linked with |
|---|---|---|
| Nageswarar temple, Thirunageswaram | About 6 km from Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu | Rahu; a parihara sthalam for sarpa dosham |
| Naganathar temple, Keezhperumpallam | Nagapattinam district, about 29 km from Mayiladuthurai | Ketu; one of the Kumbakonam Navagraha temples |
| Srikalahasteeswara temple | Srikalahasti, Andhra Pradesh | Rahu-Ketu pujas |
| Kukke Subramanya temple | Dakshina Kannada, Karnataka | Sarpa samskara and naga pujas |
| Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja temple | Haripad, Alappuzha, Kerala | Serpent worship |
| Nagaraja temple | Nagercoil, Tamil Nadu | Serpent worship |
The Tamil Nadu temple details are from the TN Temples Project pages on Thirunageswaram and Keezhperumpallam.
Other common pariharams are milk abhishekam to the naga idols under a peepal tree, prayers on Tuesdays or during Rahu kalam, and fasting on Naga Panchami or Naga Chathurthi.
A pariharam is done in faith. It does not move Rahu or Ketu in the chart, and most jothidars will still look for a matching dosham afterwards. No temple visit should be sold to a family as a guarantee.
Can a Naga Dosham Girl or Boy Marry a Non-Dosham Partner?
Under the strict rule, jothidars prefer a partner with a similar dosham. Many still allow a match if the dosham is mild, if one of the exceptions applies, or if other malefics in the partner's chart balance it in papa samyam. Ask two jothidars if the first answer worries you.
The worry should be the same for a boy and a girl. In practice, girls' families feel it far more, and that is a habit worth breaking. Families who have a long wait for a match because of a dosham may find our page on sevvai dosham useful too, since the same balance rule applies there.
Writing It on the Biodata
Tamil biodatas sometimes add a line like "Dosham: Rahu-Kethu (naga) dosham undu" or "Dosham: Illai". Many families leave it off and send the jathagam separately.
Our maker has a Chevvai / Manglik field with No, Yes, Partial and Don't Know, but no field for naga dosham. Use Add Your Own Field in the Horoscope section, with "Dosham" as the field name and your jothidar's words as the details.
The maker fills rasi, nakshatra with pada, and lagna from the birth details and prints them as text. It does not draw the rasi kattam, so send your jothidar's jathagam along if the other side wants to check the dosham. The jathagam biodata format shows how the horoscope rows look.
Common questions
What Is Naga Dosham?
Naga dosham is Rahu or Ketu in sensitive houses of the jathagam, most often the 1st, 2nd, 7th or 8th from the lagnam. It is also called sarpa dosham or Rahu-Kethu dosham.
Is Naga Dosham Checked in Marriage Matching?
Yes, by many Tamil and Kerala jothidars, usually as part of papa samyam. A naga dosham chart is matched with a chart that has a similar dosham.
Is Naga Dosham the Same as Kala Sarpa Dosham?
No. Naga dosham depends on where Rahu or Ketu sits. Kala sarpa dosham is when all seven planets from the Sun to Saturn are on one side of the Rahu-Ketu line.
Which Temple Is Best for Naga Dosham Pariharam?
Thirunageswaram near Kumbakonam (Rahu) and Keezhperumpallam near Mayiladuthurai (Ketu) are the ones Tamil families visit most. Kerala families often go to Mannarasala. Your jothidar may suggest another.
Can a Person with Naga Dosham Marry Someone Without It?
Strict jothidars prefer a partner with a similar dosham. Many allow it when the dosham is mild or when the partner's chart balances it in papa samyam.
