Kundli Matching

Is Kundli Matching Necessary for Marriage? An Honest Answer

Kundli matching is not necessary in any legal sense. No Indian marriage law asks for it, and no scientific study has shown that a guna score predicts how a marriage will go. It is a family and religious tradition. For families who believe in it, it is an important step, and for many parents it settles the mind before a big decision.

So the honest answer is: it is necessary if your family's faith says it is. It is not a test of whether two people will be happy.

Why Families Insist on It

Most Hindu families who do kundli matching do it for three reasons.

Faith comes first. Matching is part of how many families have arranged marriages for generations, and parents feel they have done their duty when the pandit approves.

The second reason is fear of a dosha. Manglik dosha, nadi dosha and bhakoot dosha are linked in tradition to trouble in married life, and parents do not want to take that risk with their child.

The third is social. Relatives will ask "kundli mili?" A family that skips it may have to explain itself at every function.

None of these is foolish. They are real reasons in real families.

What Matching Claims to Check

Ashtakoot gun milan compares the two moon signs and birth stars on 8 points, worth 36 gunas in all. Drik Panchang's kundali match tutorial describes what each one is said to show. For example, gana for nature and temperament, yoni for physical compatibility, bhakoot for family growth and children, and nadi for health.

Separately, the pandit checks manglik dosha from the position of Mars. A full chart reading also looks at the 7th house, Venus and the navamsa. Our kundli milan guide explains each step.

What It Cannot Tell You

Kundli matching works from the date, time and place of birth. It does not look at anything that happened after that minute.

So it says nothing about:

  • whether the boy and girl like each other, or can talk easily
  • their values on money, work, children and in-laws
  • health, habits, debts or past relationships
  • how each family treats a daughter-in-law or a son-in-law
  • whether either side is honest about any of the above

These are the things that come up in real marriages. A 32-guna match does not answer them, and a 14-guna match does not rule them out.

What the Law Says

Indian marriage law does not require a horoscope. The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 lists its conditions for a valid marriage in section 5: no living spouse, the ability to give valid consent, the minimum age, and not being close relatives. Horoscopes and gunas are not mentioned. The Special Marriage Act, 1954 has no such condition either.

A marriage without kundli matching is fully valid.

What Studies Have Found

Astrology's claims have been tested a few times.

In a double-blind study published in Nature in 1985, physicist Shawn Carlson tested whether astrologers could use natal charts to describe people's personality traits accurately. The astrologers did no better than chance. That study used Western astrology, not Indian matching, but it tested the same basic idea, that the birth chart shows a person's nature.

In India, a test led by the astrophysicist Jayant Narlikar, published in the journal Current Science in 2009, asked astrologers to tell apart the horoscopes of bright children and of children with intellectual disabilities. As reported, none of the astrologers who took part did better than chance.

We know of no study showing that marriages with high guna scores last longer or are happier than those with low ones. If one is published, we will add it here.

Couples Who Skip It

Many couples marry without kundli matching. Love marriages often skip it. Some families match only for manglik and ignore the gunas. Some do the matching but tell the pandit beforehand that they will go ahead anyway, and treat the result as a guide for remedies.

Families from communities that never followed kundli matching, and many inter-religion and inter-caste couples, do not do it at all. Their marriages are no different in law or in standing.

A Middle Path Many Families Take

Between "never" and "only if 18 gunas" there is a middle path that keeps both the tradition and good sense:

  1. Do the kundli matching, since it matters to the elders.
  2. Treat a low score as a reason to look closer, not an automatic no. Ask which kootas failed and whether a cancellation applies.
  3. Give equal time to the questions kundli cannot answer: meet, talk about money and work, and meet the families properly.
  4. If the match is weak on paper but strong in every other way, discuss a remedy with the pandit and decide together.

Our page on what to do when the kundli is not matching walks through point 2 in detail.

How to Talk About It with Parents

If you are the son or daughter and do not believe in kundli matching, a fight rarely helps. Some lines that tend to work better:

  • "Let the pandit see it. If there is a problem, let us ask what can be done before we decide."
  • "Can we also meet the family a second time before we say yes? Kundli does not tell us how they live."
  • "If the gunas are good but we do not get along, will you still want this?"

If you are the parent, it may help to know that many astrologers themselves say the score is one input. Asking the pandit "would you approve this match if it were your own son?" often gets an honest answer.

Saying It on the Biodata

The simplest way to avoid a mismatch of expectations is to say it up front. In our maker, add one line at the end of About Me, such as "Horoscope matching required" or "Horoscope matching not required". Either line saves the other side a phone call.

If you do match kundlis, print the rasi, nakshatra and manglik status too. A biodata with horoscope fills these from the birth details. For the score bands, see how many gun should match for marriage.

Common questions

Is Kundli Matching Necessary for Marriage?

Not by law, and there is no proof that it predicts a good marriage. Families who follow it do so out of faith and tradition, which is their choice.

Does Kundli Matter in Marriage?

It matters to families who believe in it, and they should be heard. It does not tell you about values, habits or how two people get along.

Can Astrology Predict Divorce?

No study we know of shows that astrology or a guna score can predict divorce. Treat any such claim with caution.

What Happens If We Marry Without Kundli Matching?

Legally, nothing. The marriage is fully valid. Families who believe in doshas may choose to do a puja instead.

Does a High Guna Score Guarantee Success?

No. A high score means the two charts match well by the rules of gun milan, and nothing more.
