Family Details in a Marathi Biodata

The family details in a Marathi marriage biodata are the father's name and work, the mother's name and work, how many brothers and sisters and how many of them are married, and the native place.

Marathi families put "Shri." before the father's name, "Sau." before a married woman's name and "Kai." before the name of a parent who has passed away. Many also add the maternal uncle (mama) and his village.

The girl's side often asks "who all are at home?" on the very first call. A clear family block answers it before they ask.

Father and Mother

LineHow to write itExample
Father's nameShri. + full nameShri. Dattatray Ganpat Kadam
Father's workPost and place, or "retired" and from whereRetired, MSEB, Satara
Mother's nameSau. + full nameSau. Shobha Dattatray Kadam
Mother's workHomemaker, or her post and placeHomemaker

Write the department, not just "government job". "Conductor, MSRTC" or "branch manager, district cooperative bank" tells a family far more. For a retired parent, say where they retired from.

On a Marathi biodata the section heading prints as कौटुंबिक माहिती (kautumbik mahiti), and these labels print in Marathi by themselves.

The Honorifics, and What Each One Means

These short words do a lot of quiet work on a Marathi biodata. Everyone in Maharashtra reads them the same way.

WordShort forUsed before
Shri.ShrimanA man's name, usually the father
Sau.SaubhagyavatiA married woman whose husband is living
Kai.KailasvasiA person who has passed away
Chi.ChiranjeevAn unmarried boy, often the boy himself
Ku.KumariAn unmarried girl

"Kai." matters most. If the father has died, "Kai. Dattatray Kadam" says it fully and respectfully. No extra line or explanation is needed.

For a widowed mother, families usually drop "Sau." and write "Smt." or just her name. Ask the elders what your family prefers.

Our form does not add any of these. Type them in the name lines yourself.

Brothers and Sisters

In our form, Brothers and Sisters each have two counters: total, and how many are married. From these the biodata prints a ready phrase in Marathi. For example, 1 brother with 0 married prints as "1 brother (unmarried)" in Marathi, and 3 sisters with 1 married prints as "3 sisters (1 married)". The digits print as 1, 2, 3, not as Marathi numerals.

Many families also write where a married sister lives, or what a brother does. Add a row with Add Your Own Field at the end of the family section, for example:

  • Field name "Elder sister", details "Sau. Ashwini Jagtap, Karad"
  • Field name "Brother", details "Engineer, Pune, unmarried"

Count step-siblings the way your family counts them. If you are unsure, give only the counts and explain on the phone. Our English page on siblings in a biodata has more wording.

Mama and Ajol

Ajol is the mother's parental home, the mama's house. Writing the mama's name and village is an old Marathi habit, and it works. The other family often finds a common relative within one or two phone calls.

In our form, open Add More Details in the family section and pick Maternal Uncle. On a Marathi biodata it prints as "Mama". Write it as "Shri. Sunil Bhosale, Wai".

Two mamas can go in the same row, separated by a comma. If you want a kaka or an atya as well, use Add Your Own Field, but stop at two or three names. A biodata is not a family tree. Our page on maternal uncle details shows how other states write the mother's side.

Native Place, Family Type and Property

Write the native place (mool gaon) with taluka and district: "Patan, Dist. Satara". Even a family living in Mumbai for three generations gets asked this.

Three more rows are under Add More Details in the family section:

RowOptions in our form
Family TypeNuclear Family, Joint Family
Family StatusMiddle Class, Upper Middle Class, Affluent
PropertyTyped by you, e.g. "Own flat, Kothrud; 4 acres, Patan"

None of these is compulsory. A one-line property entry often saves a question, but keep it broad. Survey numbers and valuations do not belong on a biodata.

All names and places here are made up.

Devak and kuldaivat can sit in this block too, just below the native place. Some families put them in the patrika block instead. Our devak in marriage biodata page covers both choices.

What to Leave Out

  • The parents' phone numbers in three places. One number in the contact section is enough.
  • The father's salary or pension amount.
  • Property disputes, partition matters or family quarrels.
  • Every relative you can think of.

Fill the block, check the preview, and make a Marathi biodata here. If the family section makes the biodata spill onto a second page, drop the least important rows first. Designs are on the templates page.

Common questions

What Does "Kai." Mean on a Marathi Biodata?

Kai. is short for Kailasvasi and is written before the name of someone who has passed away, like "Kai. Suresh Patil". It is the standard, respectful way in Marathi.

Where Do I Write "Chi." or "Ku."?

Before the boy's or girl's own name, if your family uses it: "Chi. Rohan" or "Ku. Sneha". Type it in the name line. Many families today leave it out.

Our Parents Live Separately. What Should We Write?

Write the name of the parent the boy or girl lives with. Explain the rest in the first conversation, not on the biodata.

Is Family Type Compulsory?

No. It is optional. But the question of who the girl will live with after marriage always comes up, so many families find the one line useful.

How Do I Write These on an English Biodata?

The same way. "Shri.", "Sau." and "Kai." are understood by Marathi families even in English. For a non-Marathi family, "Late" works in place of "Kai.".
